    Just watching I think I can literally smell the 100LL and oil in that thing. To those of us used to flying real planes, I love how they have created an actual real world plane with weathering and classic steam gauges. It's a breath of fresh air from all the brand new multi-million dollar glass cockpit aircraft they usually include with these games.

    Thank you for a very informative review, certainly you helped me understand what I thought were bugs like the rubbish autopilot death spirals, but were actually real world behaviours. Stick to heading mode spot on! I've been flying this plane since it came out, and I have the carenado PA44, and this is huge improvement on that. I like that you gave us a real world perspective and understanding of the real plane's performance and a demonstration of several types of landings which I certainly will be trying out. I look forward to your future videos and I've banged the subscriber button.

Just a quick update - JF have published a 2.0 patch for the Arrow already, which addresses and almost completely resolves the negative points I raise in this video. 'VH' is the Australian registration identifier. The rudder trim: I was told that you can use this when flying manually to keep the aircraft on course when wind is trying to push you off it (to relieve leg pressure) or there is an imbalance in the aeroplane. I have used in simulations and found that it works.

    • @FlyFromHome
      @FlyFromHome  2 роки тому

      You can use the rudder trim for lots of things, cancelling rudder pressure in a long climb, trimming out yaw at various cruise speeds etc etc. I just never touch in in the real plane as I find it to be an absolute nightmare to re-align!

  • @sakumisan

    Make sure the AP isn't messing with the rudder trim. I found that to be the case on several planes, it would keep rolling when I turned AP off. It's a MSFSism more than anything.

    VH- is the Australian prefix. VH-SGE is, funnily enough, the very aircraft I passed my CPL skills test in last month - though the panel has recently had the AH and HSI replaced by G5s recently.
    If JF can include G5 variants, that'd be much appreciated aha

      I also fly VH-SGE, I noticed some differences between the Arrow III and the real SGE, there is no yellow light amongst the landing gear lights. I have requested JF to return the original config of just a 430 but doubt they will. I will be back in SGE hopefully in the next week or two. Need someone to create the skin for it as the RVAC livery is lovely.

    Hi! Thanks for a great review; I was very much interested in what you're about to say.
    One thing you didn't mention, though; what's your yoke sensitivity settings? Some say it should be linear?
    You mentioned ground handling and reducing the rudder sensitivity. I did that by reducing the 'Reactivity' almost to a zero to get a delayed, sluggish, ' hydraulics like ' behaviour. How about you? (I have 25 years old CH set)

    • @FlyFromHome
      @FlyFromHome  3 роки тому

      Thanks for the kind words! I have the ailerons set fully linear but a very slight reduced sensitivity curve in the elevator axis. I’ll have to try that with my pedals, sounds good! I just put more of a curve in them so you require more deflection in the real world than before to achieve effective rudder authority. I have the Thrustmaster pedals, which are good but could do with being a bit heavier to mirror the real world better!

    • @FlyFromHome
      @FlyFromHome  3 роки тому +2

      It’s because the cooling is sufficient without them! The Arrow does have a lot more scoops and louvres in the cowling than the Cherokee/Warrior though, so these must keep the larger engine sufficiently cool without the added complexity and weight of moving cowl flaps.

    Re the rudder trim wheel, because my twisty rudder control is very twitchy I use it for crossed controls landings in strong crosswinds. With 500' to go, for every 3° of crab angle I apply 5° of opposite trim, so for say 9° crab I apply trim, quickly counting "and 1, and 2, and 3", banking slightly in to the wind. It's quite effective. Note that the recommended max crosswind component is 17 kts. I've successfully landed with a max crab angle of 15°.

    • @FlyFromHome
      @FlyFromHome  3 роки тому

      Good to hear it comes in useful for you! In the real plane it’s more to do with trimming straight at different cruise speeds, but I don’t usually bother with it!

    • @sirbarringtonwomblembe4098
      @sirbarringtonwomblembe4098 3 роки тому

      @@FlyFromHome I use it for that as well.
      I also use small twisty rudder inputs if neccesary just at touchdown with my 'crossed controls' method.
      I used to think it must be annoying to always need to apply rudder in aircraft without trim (eg, Me109E), but when you drive a car you're always pressing on the accelerator pedal!
      I noted you said that you don't really lean the mix in the Turbo, you just vary the fuel flow.
      Does this mean you don't need to worry about engine damage by 'leaning' at high power above 75% unless its normally aspirated?
      BTW I found I had to start leaning (@75%) today over the Alps @ 9500'/temp +6C/29.94"). But as you said, MSFS doesn't model this very well.
      Started to ice up in cloud above 11000', so came down a bit.Then I damaged my gear in a bounced landing at Courchevel - can hardly discern the runway in 'real world' weather, ie snowy in summer!

    • @FlyFromHome
      @FlyFromHome  3 роки тому

      It’s actually quite a complex subject re. leaning in fuel injected/turbo aircraft. Most injected aircraft, turbo or not, are ‘altitude compensated’, which means they adjust mixture for you to a degree as you climb. You use the red lever to fine-tune the fuel you’re feeding into the engine to achieve a best power/efficiency setting (with help from the EGT gauge), usually once you’re at your cruise altitude. FS2020 doesn’t seem to quite work properly in this respect yet though, so you’ll likely find yourself having to lean out with altitude above 10k or so, as if you were using a normally aspirated, carburetted engine.

      With the ‘traditional’ DI selected on the IPad, you use the little knob just to the side of the instrument. Nope, injected aircraft *should* kick into life before you put the fuel flow in, just using the fuel you primed it with. It’ll stop pretty quickly though so you have to have fast hands to shove the fuel in as soon as it kicks over! If you leave the mixture/fuel flow up, it floods the engine as you're cranking!

  • @Munky332
    @Munky332 3 роки тому +3

    THIS is the review I've been waiting for. Personally, I think right now I'm going to hold off.
    I think my *biggest* complaint with most of the default aircraft in MSFS is that they went gung-ho on the G1000 and modern avionics which is such a rarity in anything but high end flight school aircraft. most of the time you'll be flying a warrior or cherokee or 150/152/172 with avionics from the 70's. so it's nice to see that JF went with an actual GA aircraft and avionics you'd see as opposed to slapping a G1000 in there or something stupid.
    Only thing holding this back, IMO, is the freaking G430/G530. MSFS2020's implementation of it is atrocious. If I were a garmin rep, I'd be contacting them and complaining every day, and/or offering support, as the Garmin name being on that piss poor representation of it would piss me off. Every sim has worked out a half-decent implementation of the G430/530, there's no reason they should be going back to the stone age and reinventing the wheel here. I know they are working on it, but IMO that should be priority #1, is getting that thing working like it should. there's SO many missing features and functions that should be working that don't. Don't even get me started on how broken the GPS approaches are...

    • @FlyFromHome
      @FlyFromHome  3 роки тому +1

      I agree, although I do think there are some other issues right now (performance issues, ILS bugs, real-time weather bugs, inability to model weather radars etc) that could do with some attention first. The default Garmins are getting a little better every patch, so fingers crossed they’ll be a good simulation of the real thing eventually!

    Apparently, the Arrow III has a rudder trim due to its big 200HP engine generating a lot of torque and p factor which can tire the left leg quickly. At least that is what I got as answer when asking the very same question.

    • @aileronsintowind6835
      @aileronsintowind6835 3 роки тому +1

      PFactor is adverse yaw which causes the aircraft to yaw to the opposite side or prop rotation. In this case the raw is left inducing and this is counted with the right leg

      @@FlyFromHome many aircraft developed are done so with the p factor factored into the rudder for when at cruise Set up I don’t believe piper ever did this ( extra costs no doubt ) and this would create increased fatigue on pilots constantly applying pressure to the peddles to stay co-ordinated, it was also designed as competitive aircraft against the Cessna, have a rudder trim is an excellent advantage in that region especially in the four seater class. Mooney and the 182 Cessna both came with rudder trims ( the Mooney really needed it ) so it may be just a market theme at a guess,
      similar to the emergency gear deployment system which before they released the kits for operated irrespective and unfortunately cost a few lives when it deployed when engine failure occurred and the pilots weren’t expecting it.

    Thanks a lot for great and very interesting tutorial. I'm just starting off with PA28, flew it about 5 hours total. Before that my favorite was Cessna 172 steam gauges, TBM 930, BC Bonanza 63Turbo. I really like PA28, read trough the whole manual, watched videos and learnt the checklists by heart, but I have a question. Aircraft performance... Tried to flew LFMN-NIZ-TOP-VANAS-LFLJ (Nice to Courchevel). I needed to bypass the mountains about 100FL, but even in summer time (warm, no icing) it just can't go over 8000ft. The manifold pressure at 8000 is 22 with lean to 35% mixture, and with the RPM 2300 or even 2600 it is loosing altitude and stalls. But when I tried to fly to Lukla from the near airport, it sucessfuly flyes over a mountain where 172 compleately sucks and fails to gain altitude. So it is more powerful, 200hp vs 150hp of Cessna.
    So the question is. Why with the ceiling of 15000ft it can reach max 8000ft?
    If I read ODM chart correctly "gear up climbing performance" it should climb 400ft/m at 10deg C at 8000ft at 90Knots (page 8), but not stalling at 0 vertical speed. PS. The pilot's weight 220, 1st pilot's 180, passanger's 80, baggage 100, fuel 60% which all makes it 70% of allowed weight. The chart indicates 100% weight of 2750lb for this performance.
    Also what would you suggest if icing occures? at Alternate air, max tgrottle and RPM, hot air and air flow max, descent and maybe drop the speed to the minimum, so the wind cooles the airframe less?
    PS. Will update.
    Just tested before the mountains start. It behaves as in the cart! -5C deg, a bit less weight of 2500Lb, 2600 RPM but mexture lean (they say it is rich) and it climbs at 400 ft/m. But if in the mountains the performance dramatically drops.
    I managed to raise it to 11700 to make Vspeed = 0 before the mountains. And in Aplps I had to go to 10000 and even less to keep the Vspeed = 0. And I see how the the plain flies with its nows raised up a lot. Why? Thin air?

    • @FlyFromHome
      @FlyFromHome  3 роки тому +2

      I’ve honestly not tried dragging it up that high, but I expect that a lot of what you are experiencing are bugs surrounding how piston aircraft perform at high altitude in MSFS right now. IRL you’d set 25 inches and 2500 RPM with the fuel flow full forward and keep advancing the throttle every 1000ft until you hit the stops (usually at around 4k feet). It’s a fuel injected aircraft remember, so ‘leaning’ isn’t really something you should have to do - just pull the fuel flow back to the appropriate figure for your MAP setting at the top of climb. That said, I don’t think the sim properly models this behaviour yet.
      The icing procedure we would use is stay out of icing conditions 😂. But if you did encounter them you’d want to get out ASAP. Turn around, reverse your course and descend to your calculated minimum safe altitude, ensuring that your pitot heat is on, your windscreen heat is blowing and your alternate air intake is open. You actually want to be flying a little faster, as icing will increase your stall speed.
      Nose high attitude is usually CofG or just low IAS!

      @@FlyFromHome Thank you a lot for such a detailed explanation! It is really helpful and gives answers to lots of my questions.
      For the icing it seems a golden rule to keep out of icing indeed)
      BTW, would you dare to fly Cessna 172 or Piper Pa28 to Courchevel through the mountains with its performance? I know single engines are not recommended for flying over the sea or mountains in terms of if engine fails there are no chances whilst 2 engine airplain have 2 times more chances. So if not taking that in mind, just in terms of performance.

      Honestly for that kind of thing I’d much prefer the security of two engines! Or at least a turbo aircraft with good high altitude performance and some crew oxygen. Twins generally have better performance than singles at altitude though, if that’s all you’re considering.

    I bought the plane in an attempt to learn a bit in a decent plane. So watch content such as this to try to assist. It’s more my issue not really understanding the basics, but it’s confusing to me when you start setting throttle in inches (make no sense to an engineer!) and then mixture getting set to gallons per hr. obviously in both cases the sim has a percentage value. I guess numbers quoted will refer to one of the instruments.

    • @FlyFromHome
      @FlyFromHome  3 роки тому

      No worries! You use the aircraft intake manifold air pressure to set the throttle, so when I’m referring to ‘inches’ I’m actually referring to the inches of mercury that the MAP gauge is calibrated in. The fuel flow is helpfully part of the same instrument also, and reads in gallons per hour. The instrument can be tricky to spot as it’s partially obscured by the pilot’s yoke, so I recommend clicking on the yoke to hide it when you want to read the instrument.

Timing is still unknown. But as good as the JF Arrow is, when the A2A Comanche comes out it will be a whole different level of simulation.
      I expect them to bring their realistic walkaround + failures + maintenance system to MSFS. Their addons require walkarounds to check for things like water in fuel, oil level, control surfaces and linkages, and pitot and static port blockages. You can get all sorts of failures, like broken clevis pins that allow bolts to work loose that will eventually lead to an inflight failure. You also need to change the oil from time to time, like in real life.
