Hi Tara, loving your series. Would you explain exactly how your notes are structured on the page. Do you just go through the article, writing bullet point and if so how do you then synthesis later for article writing etc.huge thanks Sally xx

It makes such a difference if you start this process at the beginning! Great luck and keep in touch :) Txxx

4:07 - the Smartphone phenomenon is everywhere! I see it all the time at my Germany uni. I ditched my smartphone last year for various other reasons, but when I was in Australia recently I found a bunch of my notes from my bachelor days - and I was definitely more than occasionally guilty of the highlighting thing. Thanks for the great vlog Tara!

“The point of note taking is you are presenting research to your future self”.

Hi JM - great to see you, superstar. And yep - I'm doing deep research at the moment. Using thirty years of notetaking for my current books. And I am very thankful to my younger self. Selves ;) Hope all is great with you :) txxx

This is a matter of outstanding importance for _any_ individual involved in academia, so thank you kindly for this vlog. However, with the tens of thousands of pages of notes you have already produced, I cannot help but wonder about information retrieval: When information becomes spread across a large number of different files, doesn't it get kind of trapped within these files? How do you find what you need when you need it? I believe that the more notes we take, the more important are strategies for information retrieval. Thanks again for all the inspiration you share across the globe, T!

Morning Daniel - great point. My notes are valuable because they are pretty tightly configured around specific topics. And when I have found a file getting too big (online learning is a great example - started small - became a monster :)) I took the time to separate out subtopics. So - multimodality, disintermedation, deterritorialization, digital literacies. The great gift is to start the note files nice and small at the start :) But you are absolutely right - information literacy is THE crucial skill of our time :)

I found this very enlightening Tara--funny that I came through school and Uni and work believing that teachers /lecturers were the authority because they had the information I needed at hand, they had done all the reading needed for this. I felt couldn't think as well as anyone else or make valid judgements, yet the questions I asked the academics were generally courteously received and discussed. When they asked me questions though, I felt inadequate because they held all the knowledge I needed to answer them. I will follow Tara's 10 Tips and organize and file my properly referenced notes under topics from this point on, as suggested, and on my computer, and also include my impression of the scholar's scholarship and what this article has to offer me as well. Thank you Cathy Jones

Hi Tara, as you know from our discussion in Digital Office Hours, this skill is one that I don't have confidence in. So, I have rewatched this vlog for the umpteenth time to help get my head around it. cheers, doug

When on Earth do I learn this? It always hurts my confidence. I am obsessed with note-taking, but I am really bad at taking notes. Special thanks, Tara🙏

My first instinct was not promising: zombie talking, bright lipstick... By the end of Vlog I have to say WOW. Simple, argumented with practical tips/methods. One of the most useful Volgs about related topics PhD. Thank You Dr Brabazon
