  • Tara introduces her 'set up document' - the document she uses to introduce, orient and induct her students into doctoral supervision and a PhD programme. This document builds a supervisory relationship, frames the research and creates a flying start to the first year.

Dear Tara I have been tremendously amazed and surprised of your transparent teaching character with a free and independent mind. I say this bcz others try to hide knowledge until you miss the way or try to go with a blurry vision of a good structure of ending a phd. To see you now is like to get a savior in the matter. Eg try to write to amercan professor he will delete the msg before he read it. Thank you for your work.

I wish I had meet this vlog earlier. I have 1 year left to submit- but I have been through a lot - change of supervisors, diagnosed with chronic illness which completely disrupted my daily life as a PhD researcher as well as my confidence to be able to complete this journey successfully. If you have any special magic words for me - I would be grateful. Thanks Tara :)

Why does UA-cam only have one 'like' button? This was awesome Tara, thank you. I will be presenting this document (modified, but of course crediting you) to my supervisor for my Masters thesis.

Works really well for the Masters as well, Sean. You know I am a big believer in the masters degree. They are different from a doctorate - but still so important. And again - expectations matter so much in this space... And mate - good suggestion - I might come up for one for all the diverse modes of masters as well. Coursework - starter document. Moving into coursework dissertation. Stand alone research masters. On it Sean - thanks superstar. Txxx

Thanks Tara that's really helpful. Filling in the set up tool now. It asks the tough questions that will help keep me focused and keep me and my supervisors heading in the right direction. Thank you I really needed this. Wish I had it a few months ago. Tools like this are great for discussions that help students and supervisors visualise and wrap their head the motivation, skills and project. A much needed holistic approach. I wish there was a supervisors version where they overtly state their motivations and plan skill development. This would be interesting across the supervision panel. Its not only the student who should be open and vulnerable. Going to whip this out at next meeting and will let you know how I go!

Jess - my absolute pleasure - and I wouldn't have done it or even thought about it without you :). I love how you describe it as a holistic approach. That's brilliant. But I think it is a reminder of that old cliche - 'you are more than your thesis.' As to a supervisor's version. Wow that is terrific. Some universities use supervisory charters to do this - 'we agree that this is the baseline of our service and care for students.' But I'm always torn between a profound respect for supervisors and worry about what happens when it all goes so wrong. So respecting their expertise and supervisory skill. But also the requirement to stay current with innovations in teaching, learning and andragogy in the doctoral space. So professional development is crucial. All we can do is make sure students have all the information they require about a prospective supervisor. So they go into the situation with their eyes open. But, as you know, Steve and I have argued about the importance of national regulation in this space. Indeed international regulation to ensure the quality of the supervision and the quality of the doctorates... So 'top down' and 'bottom up' strategies lift the quality of supervision. It's a much longer process than a single student's candidature :) Txxx

Dear Prof Tara, thank you for sharing this vlog. It has completely changed how I see my PhD journey moving forward. It has also put into perspective what my first meeting with my supervisor will look like. I will definitely share this "set up document" with her prior to our meeting. Thank you so much.

I will be starting my Ph D in September this year. This is fantastic. I have been trawling UA-cam for guidance.
Thank you very much Professor. I will regularly be viewing you vlogs.
Have you ever thought of linking your vlogs whenever the relate to the same general area eg interdisciplinarity, transdisciplinarity or multidisciplinarity in the description sections?
    Thank you!

I'm an undergraduate (1st year! still a baby) who's been really unsure what to do with his life after, I've always wanted to go further than just undergrad but never really been sure if I could. Your vlogs (I've watched a good 10 in the past 3 or 4 days!), especially the one about imposter syndrome are making it seem less insurmountable than I thought, even though it's still a few years until I need to decide - thank you!

You are so not alone, FF. So not alone. It is so important we create this break, a sense that this is big, important and different. That's why expectations management is key to a successful candidature :) Thanks for being you. Txxx
