The Modding Scene in Racing Games

- Опубліковано 6 лют 2025
- Modding has been a long running culture in gaming, but it wouldn't be until the early 2010s when the racing genre gets its own fair share of modding content for some old and beloved titles such as the Black Box era of Need for Speed. Since then the scene has grown rapidly with different kinds of mods made for a lot of racing titles. So lets take a closer look with some developer insight to some of these mods and how they impact the game themself

If you have some modding experience aswell you'd like to share feel free to do so in the comments here and I hope this video made you want to just play around with the game you like and see what you can change in it yourself!
I have a somewhat unusual request. Could you please increase your video quality to 1440p? The 1080p resolution gets too blurry sometimes due to UA-cam’s compression, and it affects my enjoyment of your content because I really enjoy it.
You're missing out on some crazy Burnout mods. From flying fighter jets in Paradise, to fighting through an army of kamikaze buses in Takedown.
I haven't been a modder, but I've been a fan of NFS Modding for a long time, and at least I've only been involved in supporting the NFS Latino community.
What I've learned over the years is that modding can be somewhat vague in its explanations. I have two mod installation tutorials on my UA-cam channel, and during the more than 7 months that those videos have been published, I have received hundreds and hundreds of questions, complaints and very few were congratulations. In the Questions Part most of them were vague questions, that is, questions that were answered in the video, but the interesting ones were the Complaints, because I was informed of unusual errors and I always asked for information to be able to help.
The thing is that sometimes these people skip the details, and I'm not just talking about the Spanish community, but I've also seen a lot of people who speak English who also suffer from the same problems.
They used incompatible methods, or they didn't use the correct version of the game, or they ended up downloading something they didn't have to download, etc...
In Theory the problem of Modding is that people are not very interested, because you are able to explain everything to them, but they will not pay attention correctly, and it does not make sense because they are just seeing something that is there to help them, but they are not entirely attentive.
2:31 Did you just place it wrong between lite and main?
IMO the issue with the video quality is not the resolution but rather the fact that Dove is using footage from other youtubers, so you multiple levels of compression: UA-cam's compression from the original video uploads and Dove's compression from his editing/rendering/uploading. To minimize the compression I hope that Dove is downloading the original footage rather than recording the screen at least.
Thanks for having me on! :D
Omg! Dustin Eden! IM your biggest fan of you!even i watch your video!btw your video are good and funny❤
I like yellow Evo and Daihatsu Copen and midget😂
Post a new video already

When I started working with Team Pepega for Prostreet, I was happy and also nervous at the same time knowing that I don't have much experience with modding. At first I would just swap out textures like opponent liveries as one example, but after a while I showed more interested in doing more for modding aside from swapping textures like finally being able to learn the basics of blender or even swapping out car sounds. I still have a long way to go, but I can say being part of the team encouraged me to do more and even challenge myself on specific projects. So yes, it definitely is worth giving modding a try. Even doing something very small in the beginning can go a long way and give you a boost of motivation. Great video Dove
Another little gem I'd like to bring up is Asseto Corsa, where in my case I like adding new cars and tracks to the game. For example driving a 992 GT3RS around a touge map or racing down the Tokyo Expressway, there is unlimited potential when it comes to modding and I thoroughly enjoy seeing mods of this nature take root within the racing community. Overhauls like the Pepega Mods, Reformed Mod and GT Re-textured mods revitalized these older games and helped spark more interest in these older titles. It's always fun to come back to these games and experience them again.
Great video as always Dove! Props to you, Sharicite and the wonderful people who contributed their insight and experiences with modding in this video!
More like a huge gem
to put it on perspective, even complete meme mods like Focus/Clio edition of UG2, MW05, and Carbon proven to be a better experience over modern Quadruple-A gaming these days
Modding is probably half of the reason why so many racing simulators are still popular after 20 or more years: Grand Prix Legends, Richard Burns Rally, Grand Prix 4, GTR2, Assetto Corsa etc still have new players joining their communities thanks to the efforts of modders adding new content and quality-of-life improvements.
Thanks for featuring Redux and explaining it correctly for what it is, I couldn't have done better 🙏
As you said it started as a simple modpack, now it's growing each update and I'm learning everyday new stuffs that will help me improve the mod in the next months and years!
Kryzee! 😃
Modifications make the game more fun like Doom, Minecraft, Need For Speed Most Wanted, GTA San Andreas, Super Mario 64 and more. It shows our dedication and passion compared to AAA developer.
gta san andreas mods were part of the golden age of youtube
For me, the best wave of mods is the 'Lore Friendly' cars in NFSU2. They're creating cars from scratch that weren't in the original NFSU2, with ALL the customizations present in the game. They look like DLCs from 2004. There are already NSX, Silvia, Civic EG6, Acura Integra, Lexus GS430. Imagine a few years from now.
What made me upset was seeing some seemed to only have some differently set-up options of bumpers from, like, Carbon or Pro Street. A lot of the stuff in those Underground games was hideous, but somewhere in there there could've been some I would like on my NSX (and none of the Pro Street ones did it, unfortunately).
Glad to be part of this project, I think this vid has turned out really well and serves as a good introduction to the scene, and I think having multiple different perspectives on how we got started (and recommend getting started) will hopefully bring new talent to the scene
Just adding cockpit camera to every racing game would be a dream for me.
i really appreciate this type of content. brought me back to the good ol' days of first mod for NFSMW by Arushan, i was one of the lucky person to try that mod, and from that day to today, i'm still modding. even tho i do some minor modifications, great stuff man!
Hello, person behind the GRID Xtra mod here, with a couple of notes of mine:
-The mod not only adds both DLC packs' cars into the career mode, but also restores the never released V8 Supercars DLC into the game, which seems to have been cut rather late into development since the only thing missing were the proper decal placements for the player livery.(also for all DLCs it seems it was planned to include them into the career mode, judging by leftover event name strings)
-The new car sounds will be in version 2.4 of the mod, which should be releasing in a few days from now.(edit:it has released now!)
-The '24 Minutes of Le Mans' is for LMP class cars, but I will include an optional config to change it for GT cars.
-After the next update the mod will be pretty much considered 'finished' by me,as the only remaining things to change or 'fix' require someone with good knowledge of scripting or how to get into the game's code to fix a few bugs, which is completely out of my field.
-Fun fact, the Xtra name was directly inspired by Top Gear, since I was bingewatching the series at the time starting from season 1,and seasons 1-3 were from BBC Prime re-runs dubbed as 'Top Gear Xtra',and since I didn't want to pick a name like 'Redux' or '[blank] Edition' since those feel quite generic,I went with that one.Having The Stig as one of the hireable drivers in the mod is a sort of homage to that.
Sorry I wanna request something ,
can you remove Mexican filter on the game?
@@Wojach. Wojach, It didn't come to this but, the way you named it Xtra Mod from Top Gear Xtra is the BEST name you ever came up with, also I can't wait to check out the version of 2.4 of Xtra Mod, your mod is amazing.
Race Driver GRID: Already does use a bunch of irl race driver names mind you.
The mods for Carbon and Prostreet are my favourites because they almost fully realise the potential that those games have. I fully believe that Carbon and Prostreet could have been better than Most Wanted 2005 if they were given more time and those mods are proof of that.
Technically not a racing game, but I spent about a week replacing the Game Over screen in The Binding of Isaac with the GT4 License Fail, complete with custom 'licenses' based on the floor you died on and the 'driver' (character) name. It also comes with GT4 menu sfx over the existing sounds for coins and certain interactions
Unfortunately, due to Edmund McMillen's spaghetti code, removing the icons for your held items from the death screen also removes them everywhere else.
Maybe some day I'll revamp my mod using the Repentogon framework the community have produced, but for now, I'm content with it as it is.
That sounds preety cool imo
Modding racing games is fun, when i started working on Gran Turismo 2 a-spec i didnt know how to make 3d models and basically knew nothing about making textures
Almost 2 years later i think ive improved a bit, its thanks to this that i have a hobby i enjoy so yea modding racing games kinda changed my life
I'm still keeping an eye on the updates. Can't wait for 1.2!
And also Epic Turismo 2
Can't forget about GT2 A-Spec
Yes!
not only changing existing things but adding new stuff to the games with proprietary game engines always fascinates me.
Can relate as a modder for Hot Pursuit that new content helps keep the longevity, without modding I would've quit playing 2 years back
I keep coming back to hpr thx to your mods, i love the fact that you can make the carlist better by replacing the less interesting cars or just the duplicates (because god this game has a lot of duplicates)
Great video as usually, but I can't believe you didn't mention TDU Platinum :D
Mainly cause I didn't know where I could contact them for an interview while most I already knew on discord
@@DoVe_7 Aaaaah okay yeah that makes a lot of sense.
I didn't know that interviews were a key part for this video, my bad.
Regardless, a great video! :D
This is a very satisfying watch and a good resource as well. Glad I discovered your content, and I wish you luck on your content creation journey!
The Pro Street Pepega mod is probably the greatest thing ive played in the last 5 years. so damn good, so much detail and attention put into it. need to replay it soon
There were a bunch of car mods for NFS3/4 when they were fairly fresh, and I recall making some for NFS Porsche Unleashed myself.
What I really want most is a PC version of Gran Turismo 4 with modding support. With how massive the mod library is for Asseto Corsa imagine how inconceivably massive the car/track library for a freely moddable Gran Turismo 4 would be.
My dream is for Gran Turismo 6 to finally have mod support to allow for things like better camera angles, improved car sounds and models and new cars and events to be added to the game. It's an extremely farfetched dream because of how difficult it is to even emulate PS3 games in the first place but if it ever happens then GT6 will end up becoming the best GT game overall.
@@CyanRooper Only if it fixes how fucking beyond garbage literally everything but the car roster is in that game
I want to point out a few things (I'll write this comment as the video goes on)
Modding in racing games has been a staple of the genre since forever. Even Grand Prix Legends, a 1998 sim made by Papyrus, has mods and is to this day still getting new content and so did other sims of the era, such as the Grand Prix series (Microprose) and the EA F1 Sports games (which were developed on ISI engines, the same devs that would then make rFactor). Modding for the NFS Black Box era games started in 2006 with NFSMW having its first car mod, the Ferrari 360 Spider, which also acted as the mod loader. Unfortunately before the development of more advanced tools you were limited to merely replace existing cars.
I was surprised not to see a single mention of what the sim scene is like, for instance CSP for Assetto Corsa completely revamped the way content is made and added so many features that Kunos just has to sit down and analyze the mod to make sure AC2 doesn't somehow have less features than its modded predecessor.
Don't forget Need for Speed III and IV mods in 1997 and 1998. 1000's of cars and tracks. Also Sports car GT even had script mods in 1999 and modded in visual damage as well as 1000's of cars and tracks and championship mods.
Yeah, kinda sad that the 2000s scene was left out in this video :(
A lot of it has been lost to time, but as a kid Midtown Madness 1 and 2 had some of the most expansive modding i can remember. Watching my dad make his nova go 400 MPH just because 4 year old me thought it would be funny.. good memories
the midnight club modding scene is coming....
also shoutout to GT2 Project A-Spec. that mod is fucking awesome as well
Great vid! I loved the additional comments from modders
11:46 I remember playing NFS Undercover Reformed, I used to completing the career mode back then, the best part is that you unlocked the cover car of Undercover after you takedown Chase in the final mission, 14:05 and that mod is where it got me addicted to GRID, I just beat the game 5 times! And right now I'm completing the game again for the 6th times now! overall I will rate NFS Undercover Reformed Mod and GRID Xtra Mod a 100/10! Reformed Mod for NFS Undercover and Xtra Mod for GRID for the win! And as always, great video Dove! ^^
i haven't built my proper gaming PC yet cause im still waiting on CPU, motherboard, RAM, and storage, and my old ass 2012 cheapo laptop can't emulate PS2. but i just got GT4 Randomizer running on my ACTUAL PS2 and it's such a treat to finally be playing it after over a year of watching people making content on it.
Kryzee doing Lord's work by keeping MW & Carbon alive and supported for modern equipment, with amazing graphic & gameplay mods, that to someone who doesn't know what's changed, they look like official remasters.
I've been making mods for CrashDay myself, and I must say - this is probably one of the best (if not THE best) racing games to learn modding. At first, it was very rough, because I had absolutely zero knowledge of Blender and did not know this game's modding gimmicks (despite playing it for 10+ years xd). But the community really helped me get better at it, and the feel of creating something that you can see, that you can drive and that you can play around with friends is absolutely worth it.
If anyone here wants to learn modding - the Crashday: Redline Edition is the way to go. The car will work as long at there's a single mesh of the body with at least a single texture attached to it; the car specs are extremely easy to adjust, and the game itself was made with modding in mind. And even if you are not into modelling - you can always make custom career, music, textures and much more - every kind of modder will find something for him/herself. Battlefield 2 Cars, GTA:SA Cars, Real cars, sh#tpost cars, retextures, new sounds, car rebalances for fun or tournaments - all of them have their niche in there, and they're awesome.
Also, my first modding experience in CrashDay was also just increasing rewards in missions as a 8 y/o, because I could not complete some of them and did not know about button combos to unlock stuff/instantly pass the mission x)
Shoutouts to the A-Spec mod for Gran Turismo 2
no way its derosiflo ༼ つ ◕‿◕ ༽つ🥞
@@TallTapper yeah, I'm famous 😎
Great video man!
My first foray into modding was with nfs hp2 released 2002. I was very young and bored. So randomly I opened the game files and found a bunch of text files which would let me edit the car stats down to power, weight, grip, gears and other fun things. Suddenly I could make my fav car at the time a monster which would roll over of you so much as sniffed on the controller.
I didn't have and still don't have any knowledge of how to make my own full fledged mods, but that spark that you can enhance the vanilla game with mods was already lit. Had a ton of fun just adding cars to nfsmw, or installing pepega mods, or just installing the wrong mod for the wrong version and see what config would make it work.
The modding of racing games for me goes back to the stone age. 1997 and 1998. Downloading stuff for NFSIII HP and High Stakes over freaking dial up.
I used to think the Pepega mod was a dumb meme mod that only changed the textures. I remember getting tired of the pepe stuff but when I looked more into the process and saw how they were able to mod both Most wanted and Prostreet I kinda changed my mind. Not to mention talks about finding new ways of modding the game like changing or adding new tracks. Yeah I was surprised to say the least. I hope you guys at Dustin eden and the rest continue to work with modding and maybe even in a more serious way (adding more tracks, maybe even changing the career somewhat like carbon battle royal)
P.S. my comment may come across as harsh but I have no ill will.
The UNITE mods for NFS Heat and others are some of the best I've done for racing games too!
Hey bud great video!
I wanted to add something though, if your looking for the earliest "car game mods" it may not be explicitly a car game but, physics mods and car models have been added to GTA San Andreas for a long time.
Might be a cool little spin off video or something.
First mods I've seen were from the 90s for Carmageddon and old Need For Speed games.
I started modding myself back in 2001 with Insane, which was kinda the predecessor and inspiration to BeamNG. It had softbody physics and some very fun game modes both online and in single player.
It was pretty difficult to make new cars for it, so I started with texturing existing cars and working with other modders making skins for their mod cars, and also made a few new maps.
When I learned to 3d model a little, I did some vehicle mods too.
I think modding opened a lot of new possibilities, I later got a job as a 3d modeller in the game industry. Nowadays I'm building my first own racing game project :>
Well, that's one hell of a Chicane of Death at San Fracisco in GRID Xtra there o_o
I have never been so excited about a video topic as much as this.. Thank you DoVe!!!
I love when mods bring new attention to an old game. Unfortunately some of these games have been abandoned by their devs that they end up being hard to find. Pro Street for example isn't digitally sold anywhere I checked, and I'm a bit nervous about buying a disc just to find out I have to crack it anyway because one of the biggest publishers can't afford to keep an old DRM system working.
If somebody knows a good place, I'd rather pay for some official and legal version than to pirate it. Or if somebody knows that buying a disc and just putting it in still works, please let me know
EA killed black box who made our favorite era of nfs games. They also would suck a straw dry. I am perfectly okay with pirating the shit out of their content. They even killed BioWare for christs sake.
Where is carbon battle royale? it fixes most of the game's issues and adds enormous amounts of new races, cars, challenge series and some reformed reward cards
I agree, he missed other great mod for NFS Carbon
1:22 Oh dude not even, modding for racing games came much earlier than that. You can trace it back to at least Formula One Grand Prix from 1991, but I wouldn't be shocked if something came even earlier. Even within the Need For Speed series, it's been around since at least NFS 2 on PC (idk if the very first game featured mods, but I know for a fact NFS 2 3 and 4 could all use the same basic tools/framework).
As long as modding tools have been made available by developers (or fans could reverse engineer for themselves), people have been making mods: paint schemes, cars, tracks, total conversions. I'm guessing it looks like it wasn't around that early because 2000's era games were more closed off (outside of simulators like NASCAR Racing '03), but if you dig far enough, you can find modding just about from the very beginning of 3D rendered driving games.
it's insane how assetto corsa modders will try to monetize everything in any way they can lmao and it's not just for mods either, even servers will try to squeeze money out you
Well, LADA Racing Club is a racing game. It was very anticipated and sounded promising in articles (especially for a game from CIS country), but had a "big failure" story. So, I am working for a major mod to make it a better game (more customization, more songs, fixes and restored content). It is available on ModDB (and more versions comming soon).
P.S. I also made English localization patch for this game and now adapting it for my mod.
Super great video as always, love the BG music from Racing Lagoon.❤
Oh boy. Modding for racing games was already pretty big with NFS 3, 4, Midtown Madness etc. New cars and tracks in about 97-99. Then It got really big with EA F1 games in 2000-2002, which spawned bunch of modded racing leagues. Which later moved to rFactor.
3:21 I watched a video about Racing games, and I should play a racing game, but now, because of that song, I wanna play Tekken now😅
Play both lol
Midnight Club II, also has a modding scene, like the New Challenge mod (that adds a entire new career to the game)
Loved this video, explained it all very well. Keep it up!
If they ever figure how to add more AI cars per race in Gran Turismo 4, that will be the definitive racing game for sure.
Pepega mod made me replay both MW and Prostreet, and I love these games even more than I used to

IMO I think racing game modding started as early as 2000s where you have mods for classic NFS titles, as well as SCGT, and a couple of racing sims, but I think most were cars and tracks, then progressed towards track and car packs. You'd see mods for TrackMania titles as well at that time in which there were 3D models that can coexist within the vanilla content. Again, this might be kinda niche in terms of popularity compared to present day.
they made Pepega Cop a really corporation
NFS has been modded since NFS3 & High Stakes because EA itself released the Cartool that can edit those game's car models 😆
I love the ProStreet pepega one
Do Test Drive Unlimited Platinum next, since it's basically a big mod for the first TDU.

I worked in the behemont mod of F1 Challenge 99-02 called VB 1950-2024. It's self explanatory
Good video. Didn't know Carbon/Most Wanted Redux existed, maybe its time to replay those games since modern arcade racers are so boring. Also didn't know that David Rees Snell was in NFS Undercover. :D
Loved playing Carbon modded. It was my first time playing the title too. Other than some crashes i loved how the game looked and played. Big ups to the modding community!
One question tho. I've noticed that there's some of NFS modded titles that already comes with everything unlocked by default like underground 2, most wanted and so on. Is there an universal hotkey or setting i can use to disable that?
yes, it is the F5 button by default, courtesy of Extra Options

You're missing some interesting mods like...
· The insane World of GeneRally mods, where people have added boats and motorbikes to a simplistic car racing game... and they work
· How the older Ride games got mods as weird as the freaking full Pikes Peak Hillclimb (probably stolen from DiRT Rally)
· The amount of series, cars and tracks in old games like GP Legends and NASCAR Racing 3, 4 and 2003
· Mods of MotoGp games that allow you to put up to 100 bikes on track, including multi-class racing
· The insanity of Motocross Madness 2 and MX vs ATV Unleashed tracks, bikes and even full-blown game modes
· GP500 mods including stuff like minibikes and the mods that eventually both spawned GPBikes/MXBikes and TrackdayR
· etc

I really wish I still had my old GRID copy for my xbox 360...such an awesome yet underrated racing game. I've tried to get an XBOX 360 emulator on my computer but it doesn't really work quite right 😔
personally i'm kinda surprised with the choice of Redux over CBR, Improvement Mod or incoming NFSCO mod, these main selling points out there are in fact due to other pre-existing mods being just packaged. All these i mantioned had to innovate, and were the first to feature some features we currently consider as obvious in every big mod
Mainly because I was playin Redux at the time and didn't know what to do with the footage until I thought of this idea and then included the other ones from people I was familiar with that I could interview aswell
I hope with the full release of the GT4 mod, comes changing the code to not start with max cash and all cars on garage, or at least an easy to find guide on how to do that yourself.
19:36 Also, new challenge found. Guys, look up Stochastic Textures mod for GTA San Andreas, then look at the sand in Pro Street there (a bit noticeable at 23:41 too)... room for improvement (like, seriously, why the fu* is that feature not standard in games? It alone almost makes GTA San Andreas look better than V, which also has this issue, but no fix).
I wish I knew coding while not to have my head going crazy, because damn, I wish there was a modding tool for Ford Racing 2 and maybe a possible mod.
I love modding my games
I modded Mafia 2,Nfs Most Wanted 2005/2012,Nfs Prostreet,Nfs Payback and so much more

Shootout to Asuka´s fan modder.
I definitely love modding on both racing games and non-racing games. But sometimes it can creates legal problems. For example Rockstar's parent company Take-Two isn't used to amused with some people modding their old games with re3 and reVC being targeted by them. Same to OpenIV before but they eventually just let it intact and forget about that. And then Nintendo moron is after Facepunch and whatever Nintendo stuff that were in GMod recently. And maybe this hadn't affected the racing games modding scene yet and I hope modding would never involve such goddamn legal issues, and I am partially concerned about it tho.
This is more a company to company basis, rather than genres. Has EA taken down any mods in the recent years ?
