- At the Consumer Electronics Show every year, manufacturers pitch their products hoping to convince us that they have invented the future. But will their vision make our lives better, or lead humanity down a dark and twisted path?
Welcome to the third annual Worst in Show awards!
Our panel of dystopia experts have reviewed this year’s batch of hype and have… concerns. From easily hackable lawn mowers to $300 earbuds that will fail in two years, these are products that jeopardize our safety, encourage wasteful overconsumption, and normalize privacy violations.
Our judges considered five questions to select the category winners:
How bad is this product?
Are the problems with this gadget innovatively bad?
What is the global impact if the technology is widely adopted?
How much worse is this than previous iterations of similar technology?
How much do the negatives outweigh the positives?

We are already there. Fear monger news and invasive ads are the norm.
Just a correction, BMW did not cause dieselgate, that was Volkswagen.
And Deutsche Mark? Why are they always lagging behind that much
November 23, 2023: BMW lost first round of claims, "..defeat device allows a vehicle to pass regulatory tests as a low emission producing vehicle, hiding the true extent of the levels of harmful pollutants being omitted into the air in normal use.". Google it.
12 dollar a month subscription steering wheel… why does one feel the need to over exaggerate when presenting this.. this feels like a plug ro get the clip over 10 min long.. and they even failed at that

For a brand that prides itself on accuracy of information, I am surprised ifixit didn't fact check their own video
Nathan might like to check on the assertion that the average person sees 10000 ads per day. I listened to a BBC Radio 4 podcast just this morning, "More or Less", explaining where this figure first arose and what the actual number could possibly be, about 90 as I recall. Pity that an excellent video is spoiled by repetition of hearsay without checking their veracity.
Who cares. All advertisements are pushy and want you to spend every last dollar. Stop worrying about semantics and apply your hatred to the right cause: Corporate Greed

That Caper Cart thing is kind of already happening in the UK… the handheld scanners that you can use at Tesco for your shopping now show banner ads for products in the shop as you walk around and even occasionally show full page ads you have to close by scanning your next item or tapping the close button
I don’t think they’re personalised yet but I imagine it’ll happen eventually as the scanner system is linked to your loyalty card
creeps me out when i scan my club card and the little thing says my name on the screen
@@Covidsaftey It shows your name incase multiple people scan their card at the same time, So you know which is yours.

To be fair: other companies like Roborock, Dreame and Xiaomi had similar issues. There were talks at DEFCON and CCC about that.

@@wolf1438 You can refuse everything and while You will have limited experience, the phone would still be a phone and apps could be sideloaded.
The other side of the story is LG and their TV. Without their account, You have no smart functions and apps can't be sideloaded without their developers' app which requires an account to download.
We do not see 10,000 ads per day, that works out to like 11 ads per minute during awake hours. Who’s writing this script

The point of the matter is that ads ruin every experience and should not be in my face at all. Stop concerning yourself with semantics and face the real issue.
IOT devices are the worst thing for privacy and security.

The Moment True Wireless (1) had the Issue that battery drained really fast when not use wich led to to deep discharge and failure. Even Sennheiser can't replace the battery. Only upside was the replaces mine with the newer 2nd generation for free, wich at least don't kill the battery when you don't use them for a few weeks.

Legislators won’t even do right by us for basic human rights you think they’ll advocate for right to repair?
Want a quality product, easy repairable, usually with easy to purchase off brand parts, which does not spy on you, or breaks down when the manufacturer says so? Thrift stores are the place to be.
I get most of them besides the microwave. What is the problem with the microwave?
Proprietary electronics means consumers are at the whim of the company for spare parts. Guarantee if anything breaks the company will at best give a discount to buy a new one

But i feel like something like microwave, your life is on the line here, my opinion is repair job of it better leave to the qualified people. Of course, lets say if it was just the buttons that were broken, yeah I would love to be able to replace it. So tbh, it does not matter that much to me whether i have the option or not regarding microwave. Anyway, maybe you know how to repair one, so that makes your point of view different from me(normal anxious people who dont know how microwave work)
Is there an example of BMW pushing ads through the virtual display? Not doubting they may do it, but it’s good to see evidence before accusation.

The shopping cart would be cool if it automatically downloaded Kroger coupons (or whatever store) and allowed you to pay directly from the Cart

I fully support the intentions of this video, but 'dollars to Deutsch Marks' hasn't been a thing for well over 20 years. The video is too US-Centric to have a real bite.

How does the XREAL Air 2 relate to the BMW? 🤔
AFAIK It's just an AR wearable display without any processing power on it.
it simply will show whatever the host would cast to it through a wired connection.
And host could be anything - PC, smartphone, game console, anything that you can plug an external display in.
Pretty much the same would happen to any similar products from other competitors like Vuzix, Oppo, Lenovo, Rokid, Inmo, Viture etc. etc.
Even with any portable display like Asus XG17AHP I have - it will show whatever source is casting to it.
So my question here is what is so special about XREAL Air 2 comparing it to its competitors?

To be fair with Sennheiser, you cant really replace the battery in any in ear bluethooth headphones
Airpods. Apple is terrible I know, but you can still replace the batteries in them. Extremely difficult to do.

Glad I’m a roomba fan not an ecovacs fan. BMW and Amazon Alexa is like Aluminum foil and microwave oven. As for headphones I like AirPods Max.

I'm not as concerned with hackers as I am with corporate or state surveillance. Id rather deal with hackers.
It's not as simple as that. Your personal data is key to stealing your identity. Cybercriminals will not only drain your bank account, they'll try take out bank loans in your name as well. They pray on the weakness of security in your government and corporate online accounts. What we should demand is more privacy and more security by default.
I agree with most of the worst in show awards but the Xreal/BMW AR glasses have a lot of benefits and keep the head up while able to provide valuable info in your field of view and can be taken off if intrusive. Screens and HUD or windshield based AR screens are here or coming and will be much worse as you cannot remove them.

Great minds think alike it refused to buy anything from vending machines. I try and do a little online shopping as possible unless it’s gonna save me a huge amount of money. Basically I want to deal with human being who’s getting paid or living wage. Frankly, we need more people to stop buying online, but I from brick mortar and buy from person not offending machine. It’s ruining our economy and keeping people poor or making them poor. To the point my generation is having very hard time being able to buy a home. Or pay a student loans. Or just get ahead life because everything has been turned into self serve keeping tight business owners cheap job.

Choosing the Macrowave for the environmental category seemed a bit unfair. I didn’t understand the justification - was it just “you could use your existing oven”?
Doesn’t “you could use your existing X” apply to basically any innovation ever?
This is an interesting concept with really bad examples. Get your facts straight. Exclude products that are free and avoidable.
I would not mind ad panels on shopping cart, quite opposite. I was working as student brigade in shopping mall and my task was to replace ads on shopping carts - wasted paper. With display they can be swapped easily. So why not when they serve as ads anyway?
A paper ad is a lot less intrusive, obnoxious, distracting, and straight up creepy than a “personalized experience” digital device.
And perhaps we could just get rid of ads from shopping carts?
Why are you thinking you have choose one or the other? Saying no to both is also an option
@@Random_dud31 I don't think there's anything wrong with any kind of ads on the cart, it's not worse than paper leaflets or posters in the store. The tracking is the issue.
Paper is cheap and easily replaced. Given the abuse shopping carts go through it makes sense. anything electronic on a shopping trolley, especially a screen is likely to get broken.

It's too bad that you decided to add background music which is effectively just distracting thumping that makes it harder to follow what's being said. These awards are a wonderful idea to draw attention to the worst offenders and degrading the message delivery is an unfortunate choice.
I think they put it in because it actually helps most people focus on the content. For myself I'm indifferent to it. Music in UA-cam videos is basically omnipresent and no one's going to take it away for the few who don't like it. It would probably help to follow what's being said if you turn on the subtitles. Just be glad they aren't putting clips of Subway Surfer in the other half of the screen like people do in Tik Toks... now THAT'S distracting.
@@hal5474 I appreciate your comments. I'm fine with music but when it's essentially just thumping that I hear, it's very distracting. Of course, not watching a video is hardly a tragedy so it's fine. Tik Tok I don't care about so it's all good!
