As a bok fan, I am still salty about that loss in 97 because of the sheer incompetence around the state of affairs in SA rugby and how ill prepared they were for the challenge that awaited them. Full credit to the Lions. Clear on their objective and how they were going to achieve it and they did it with some annoyingly good players.
Neil Jenks kicked us to death, sure we were sure that we were going win maybe some what arrogant but the Lions did well to win playing test rugby. Loved the 2009 series and looking forward to this one. I just wish that there could be fans in the stadium:-)
All the excuses about du Plessis’ coaching and selection are perfectly true and the reason for losing the series. But so what? The Lions were better coached and better selected and won. End of.
Boks scored 9:3 tries in the test series, I think it is disingenuous to say they were going into that test series planning to kick themselves to victory, in fact as Keith Wood himself admits, the Boks goalkicking was pretty poor during the series. Considering the Boks lost the second test by scoring three tries to nil tells you everything you need to know
Absolutely, It’s what’s on the scoreboard at the end of the match that counts. Had they kicked their goals in the second test they would have won that game so the folly of not having a having a goal kicker is self evident
If you watch the 3 tests the lions were blown off the park. South Africa gave a masterclass, the likes of which have yet to be seen again, in how not to kick goals. They missed almost 100% of their kicks. Had they converted, they would have won hands down.Woods arrogance is on another level. Watch the tests.
They certainly weren’t blown off the park in the first test but beaten fair and square. I think SA were arrogant thinking they didn’t need a goal kicker. Clearly they did and that’s why they lost the second test. the third test was meaningless once the series was won.
They thought they could bully the lion's and they were wrong .. the lion's jersey the history is a powerful thing and you don't underestimate it no matter how good or how tough you think you are
To be fair they are responding to very sour grapes comments former Springboks have made about the 1997 series. 'We weren't organised so we lost'. That is the story of English/Irish/Welsh/Scottish rugby for big chunks of their history. For e.g. England weren't organised very well between 1981 and 1988.
It's just Ger Gilroy Jake - but he is well hated in his own country too, if you want a good laugh then watch his interview with Lance Armstrong. Keith Wood is on the button by the way & quite complimentary to the boks & good for him being on the winning team in 97. Carel & Willie du Plessis were good on the field but pathetic off the field.

Because he was bigger, stronger and more mobile that the UK bruisers? 4 yellow cards and NO red cards doesn't indicate to me that he was dirtier. Like me I hope that you enjoy the Springboks!
Hi Ian. I'm a saffa. It's a shame that there's so much hate being flung around. I've lived abroad for a couple of years and I've worked with people from all over. And I'll be honest, I've met a couple of Brits who I absolutely love and some that were really not nice people. That didn't make me walk around hating all Brits because of some bad eggs. I think we can all agree that you get good and bad people in every country. We're all looking forward to the Lions tour. May the games be amazing with plenty of awesome tries. And no injuries in both camps. And in the end the best team will win.
Ian you know nothing about the springboks go to the springbok museum in cape town and get a good rugby education.Vermeulen if fit its the bokke 2 -1 and cant wait for all the off the ball whingeing and bitching about Gatlands squad when you lose.
To say that The Lions didn't really deserve to win the series is showing disrespect. However, the Boks didn't help themselves either. They had an inept coach that had no super rugby or even Currie cup experience coaching the Boks. You had to question the competence of the SARFU admin in appointing Carel Du Plessis in the first place. Andre Snyman playing wing and Percy Montgomery playing centre were just some of the selection blunders that were made.
Like the Apaches were quoted in the old western movies - "Him speak with forked tongue" ... His words "their game plan was to grind us down and kick the the points" All the penalties missed, derived from what? Forward dominance perhaps? Poor discipline from the Lions? He is of the impression the Lions had good discipline. Why would SA have a game plan kicking at posts, without a kicker? I am not sure what made him to believe most of what he is saying about South - Africa during this series is true, but should you watch the games, most of what he is saying is far from the truth. It was a hard fought, closely contested series, (except forvthe last test where they got anihilated in TRUE 'Bok style) which was lost on a Guscott drop goal. What, could have, would have, or might have, does not count, and has no bearing on the history, which is fact. His take on the power game SA is famous for, which is dominating forwards, a sharp kicking game, good defence and striking at the right opportunity, is also a bit skewered. It has won SEVEN Lions tours since 1903 vs 2 Losses, multiple European Grand Slams for the Springboks, FOUR Rugby World Cups,(I include the English win in 2003, because they copied SA's game plan), multiple series wins over ALL Home Union nations, including France, and more than 50% dominance in test results over those nations. It might not be the ONLY way to play rugby, but man, does it bring results!!! You can play any other way you like, but you might achieve a poor record against opposition outside Europe, or maybe NEVER progress past the quarter finals in RWC in 9 attempts, like for instance, Ireland! And them with so many players in the Halls of Fame! I must say, since SA players and coaches got involved, there has been a marked improvement (they have relatively good forwards lately) in the Irish performance of the last couple of years, so much so, they might win a quarter final in 2023 RWC 10:46
who started it??? It was you english. The amount of black and white that died in your concentration camps is a blight on your nation. Before you respond to me I would go and read up history first.
