    I recently purchased the MaimeriBlu heavy metal sets in 12, 16, 24, and 36 (half pans). The 12 pan set was from Jacksons and the other three sets straight from Italy. I LOVE them! If you read the color listings on Jacksons, they have incorrect listings. Sometimes duplicating a color name twice. These are far from student grade watercolors and I do like them more than my Winsor and Newton artist grade pans. W&N seem like little dried up old cakes compared to these MaimeriBlu. I can put layer over layer over layer with these. However, I do not like them as much as my Schmincke set or Qor. I do adore the heavy metal box. My pans do not fall out nor move around as much as yours look to. I just love how shiny the pans are when dried.

    On one hand I like the color selection of the pan 'cause the colors are very pretty, but also the total lack of a cool yellow and the sheer overabundance of reds is BAFFLING-- like it really feels like whoever picked the colors for this set had some VERY SPECIFIC needs lmao. Like this set feels like it was made for people who wanna paint autum scenery and autumn scenery alone

    You had a lot more patience for the color discrepancy and the paper being stuck-on than I would have, lol!

    I’m afraid this set does Maimeri Blu a disservice. When I was in Florence last, I went to a art shop that (of course) had the full Maimeri Blu selection. At first I just bought a half pan, having never tried the brand before I wasn’t going to get more. Handprint list Maimeri as having a single pigment indigo which I was curious of so I picked that. When I got home I realized how tiny the half pan was. Their tube was only very slightly more expensive do I returned the pan and got the tube. The color was amazingly intense! I really recommend trying their tubes and buying a smaller selection of colors you actually like and want to try.

      I completely agree with Kristine! I have 21 Maimeri Blu tubes altogether. Although I prefer my D Smith, M Grahuam, W&N and Sennelier watercolours, Maimeri Blu’s Indigo, Garnet Lake, Sandal Red, Faience Blue, Cupric Green Deep, Paynes Grey, Transparent Mars Brown, Green Blue and Permanent Violet Blueish are lovely!
      I noticed that my Sepia seems much greyer, and my Verzino Violet paints out much more intensely, than the ones in the video. It looks like their w/c is better from tubes, than pans. Though, mine are dried in pans and seems to reconstitute nicely.
      I would have been very annoyed at that ridiculous colour selection though! Imagine getting this as your first set of “professional” paints! You’d give up watercolour or return to your Cotmans!

      I agree! I have a MMB set and a couple tubes. The set is fun to try a bunch of their colors, but their indigo (and their Payne’s grey, which is also PB66/vat blue 1) is gorgeous! Also their Dragons blood (pbr25) and Quin Violet pv55 are super lovely paints, very pigmented.

    I bought a set of 5 tubes plus 2 more in November here in Australia. They have recently been bought out by the same company that now owns Canson and Arches. I love the paints I have. They are also single pigment paints. They have wonderful pigment rewet easily and mix well with each other as well as with different brands. I agree the pan set is weird and I don't understand the colour selection. However I have no issue with my MaimeriBlu watercolours

    Very weird color selection. Seems like a thrown-together-with-what's-left set rather than a standard one. What do they expect you to paint with all those reds and oranges? Dante's Inferno? Had some Maimeri that I liked well enough ten years ago, but think their company was bought by another and am not sure the quality is what it was. Mine may have been student grade, but they were less intense than what I use now.

    These are odd. I just got this set as a gift from a friend and it came with the colors that you listed but didn't get. I could not get the green earth to re wet. It was weak and binder heavy and had a shine on the paper when dry. I have a few old maimeri tubes that are very bold and vibrant. These are my first pans from them. Nice review.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  2 роки тому +1

      It's so weird that your Green Earth wouldn't rewet at all. It's never a strong color but there's still a difference between a rock and a rewettable paint. I have some "modern" tubes of their paints and they are very nice and strong... So I'm not sure why they wanted to include such a capricious pigment as Green Earth in a palette. I'm glad you got the "good" colors instead of the random selection I ended up with XD

    Thank you for the review! They seem to have given you a mystery and additional tasks to solve before you're able to paint... Your painting came out beautiful as always nonetheless. MaimeriBlu is one of the more accessible and affordable brands in Japan so I have a couple. I do have an impression that the pigment load is on the lower side and the amount of paint you get in a pan is inconsistent. So I always buy them when they're on sale when I want to try some different colours. I somewhat like their reserved(?) tone of colours if that make any sense. The metal box design is so cool though!

    I have nothing against unique colour selections, but when you're paying for a set like this, i feel like it should at the very least include a cool and warm variant of the three primaries so it's at least got enough variation to paint the majority of things, regardless of your painting topic.

I was actually considering adding a 12-colour set from this highly recommended brand and am SO happy your video came up on my feed today (sadly, it had been a while since I had watched but have now subscribed so I won’t miss any more of your amazing work!!). I am totally reconsidering 😽

    I want some Maimeri (one day) only to compare with a few colours from other brands. I've become wary from buying sets because the colours are too standard, which in this case was not :) (unless the set is so cheap that I at least have a nice box to put other paints in.
    At least I'm a bit cautious wit buying Maimeri pans... what a hassle to get those unwrapped and ready to paint with. Actually one should try to find out if this is always the case.
    You ended up making a lovely painting again, Eve. And a very useful review. Thank you very much!

    I just rewatched this one and I am still so puzzled by...everything...here.
    I haven't had any pro level Maimeriblu in halfpans, but the ones I have in tubes and dried in wells I like well enough for sure.

      Oooo, dots would be nice! I got three tube colors after purchasing this set, to complement it. I got a yellow ochre, neutral tint and Payne's gray. They are really nice. Which color from them is your fav?

      @@EveBolt From the colours I own, I really like the famous snot yellow, ha ha - their PY175. It's very mild in mixes, but I like the colour and idk. Despite its weirdly slimy behaviour I really dig it. My other favourites are their PB16 and their weirdly dusty Sepia that you already have. The last to neutralize quite yummily too. :)
      All that aside, Maimeriblu is definitely not my overall favourite brand, but they do have a couple of cool colours.

    I heard that except their 36 colour set which has a fixed colour selection, all the other sets have a random selection of colours. It means you could get any colour in the smaller sets! So I wouldn’t recommend taking the chance with the Maimeri sets unless you buy the 36 colour one.

    Thanks for another great review! I agree with the color selection - not very usable for mixing with the provided colors! The fact that their own paint pans don't fit properly in the kit is very odd. My first set of watercolors I ever bought was a 24 pan set of Maimeri Venezia for $75 thru a stamp company in about 2003 that said they were excellent. I put them in a very safe place. • @anab3325
    @anab3325 4 роки тому +1

    Seriously? I actually enjoyed the fact that at least the colour selection is different than the standard cold and warm primaries (sometines with a green or violet *gasp* if you're lucky). Two of my favourite sets are Qor's chroma set and the earth set. Because they are Different! If you're a beginner yeah you get their beginer set, but if you want to add and expand your collection by buying a cute set ( usually cheaper than buying random colors on their own) than you don't have options, specially curated ones. About the intensity I don't get it. Last year I went to Italy and got myself some tubes of Maimeriblu professional colours (one of which was that Garnet Lake) and the level of pigment you can get from that is AMAZING. My Maimeriblu are some of the most pigmented colours I own (and I own a LOT of different professional brands. Even their true Veridian is exquisite! Are you sure you let the water seep into the paint? This is not a critique but you do tend to paint on the light side, usually with just one layer, two tops (it's your style and it's great and cute! And with adorable kittens that are, you know, ADORABLE!) but I feel you haven't really given this brand a good chance. Please try to give them anotger go. I haven't tried their pan paints so it mught be a pan versus tube thing but I put my paint in a pan and everytime I use them they feel just as fresh, moist and vibrant as the day I squeezed them out. About the othercomplaints (box, paper in the paint, etc) I know it's your jobto nitpick about these things, but to me it felt like just that, nitpicking. There are not many brands where there wasn't a detail or another that I didn't have an issue that I didn't have to fix with a bit of glu tack, magnet or even an exacto knife because it's impossible to answer to everyone's quirks. Of course the box wasn't made to fit other brand's half pans just to point out one of your negative points. I for one am really not a fan of van gogh's pans, but that's a 'me' thing, I don't go around complaining about van gogh as a whole. Their paints are very good ( although i prefer their Rembrandt, they are very, very good). Anyways, I know it doesn't look like it but I really enjoy your videos and they're very informative and you really go to great lengths in order to showcase all products in their best features, so congrats for that, and please keep up with the good work. It just felt like you didn't give a chance to a brand that is probably one the best out there in terms of good quality paint, not giving them credit for the fact they tried doing something different for example.Maybe I was just lucky with my purchases. Who knows... Kudos and hearts ❤️❤️❤️❤️

      It's fine, I'm sorry I saw the comment this late!! 😅
      I'm usually a big fan of unusual sets and I love the challenge they pose, but yeah. As a reviewer, I was talking from a more general point of view than my personal point of view. I will definitely try these paints again (after all, I have them) so we'll see, but I was still expecting something a bit more from them for that price. I have other sets in that price range and the colors don't behave the same way at all.
      I've heard a lot of varying impressions of the Maimeri Blu paints, so if possible, can you tell me which range of paints you got from them? I can add a few tubes to my wishlist on Jackson's and eventually get them to try out. There can be a difference of formula between pans and tubes, so that could be a thing.

  • @suzisandpiper
    @suzisandpiper 3 роки тому

    I've just watched this as I was looking at a set of maimeri blue....the pans look exactly like the ones Daler Rowney use with the side notches, so their small travel palette would fit those paints. These heavyweight palettes are the same design as the vintage palettes of Rowney and W&N as well as Schmincke probably...but the older vintage pans were thicker and bigger than the modern ones which don't fit those palettes very well. So I try to swap the paints into larger pans which makes fir a better experience painting. With W&N that's possible because the pans are extruded paint one can usually prize it out.

    You have helped me to not want any of that brand, however I wasn’t going to get them anyway. I would want a more lively bright yellow and far less orange. Convenience greens are handy and you’re right, that first green you swatched was icky. I’d never want to have that paper issue stuck to my new paints either. Hopefully that enamel palette will work out great with another set. Thanks!

    I recently purchased a Maimeriblu-Set of 24 on Amazon (Germany) and even though I really like the paint and the odd color selection somehow ended up suiting my personal style, I'm still confused. The Set came with only 1 Magenta, 1 primary Yellow, 1 Red and 1 "Green" which happens to be Green Earth. The Rest of the the palette consists of 4 Oranges, 7 Earth Tones, 2 Purples and 2 Blacks. There are also Potters Pink and 4 blueish Colors. There's so much weirdness in this Palette. The Blacks look very similar. The Purples are also pretty similar. There's no cool yellow. I love Orange but who needs 4 in a 24 color set. There's no true green and mixing a non-muddy green is basically impossible since there's only 1 warm yellow or a weak Raw Sienna that can act as yellow components in color mixes. The inclusion of 4 Oranges makes 5 out of 7 Earth Tones kind of useless since most of the Earth are mixable using the Oranges. There's also a weird Naples Yellow. It looks like yellow ochre but doesnt act like yellow ochre . It feels more like Titanium Buff with more transparency and tinting strength. The List of weird things about this palette goes on and on.
    Dont get me wrong, I do like the paints and would recommend them but please choose your own colors. The Sets are weird. They cannot be trusted. The Metal Tins are cool and they fit Schmincke Half-Pans well but that doesnt make up for the down sides of these sets.

    Weird color selection indeed. I like the lid of the tin, but I dislike that way of securing the pans - I prefer the more common row of tabs. The flap would be so much more useful if it didn't slope down so much and had closed corners (open corners on those flaps is one of my biggest pet peeves in palette design 😂). I personally prefer a sectioned surface instead of this flat style - not deal-breaker, but definitely a factor when I'm looking at palettes.

      I think the paints are a nice quality, but the selection makes it more limited. It would be pretty difficult to paint a sunny summer day in a green field with flowers, because of the lack of yellow. However, if one wants to do a series of illustrations or paintings with a limited palette, this is a good selection for it.
      Why start with color mixing (I'm curious), what's the goal of this step?

    eta: Hit post too soon. I realize you've probably had these for a while but I hope you got a happy ending! I wonder if this was a one off or Jackson's has a pile of these monster sets in their inventory waiting for another victim.

    I saw this set on Jacksons but they’re not in stock at the mo, Maimeri Blu have used a version of the Loxley watercolour Box - sprayed silver. I prefer the loxley 16HP watercolour box from Ken Bromley arts (it can actually hold 24 Half pans securely, without needing to add magnets ). www.artsupplies.co.uk/item-loxley-empty-heavyweight-metal-box.htm Ps: you can flattern the pan dividers down to fit more pans in. I think you may have saved me spending money on this new set, especially when the Loxley box I have, can carry more without having to flattern the pan dividers 🤗

    What a weird color selection indeed Oo

    This actually seems more geared towards portraits to me, still a bizarre selection of colors though.

    What a weird tin. The price of those in the US is astronomical. I would never buy them. It looks like im not missing out on much.

    I don't understand this brand. It just seems so... blah to me. I don't know. The packaging, logo, paint, everything just seems so unimpressive to me. So far I've had zero issues with Winsor & Newton and Daniel Smith so I think I will just stick with them. Very curious to try M. Graham too

    It was physically painful to watch you swatching green earth. I can’t believe they are considered professional paints.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  3 роки тому

      Green earth is generally weak and harder to rewet, it's a pigment thing. But yeah, this one doesn't come across as "the best green earth" at all.

    Very odd color selection. I would have been so upset with it, especially for the price. Thanks for your review

      Yes. It would've been better if I had gotten the colors listed on Jackson's. 😑

    Ugh... I`m not sure if I would ever buy another Maimeri Blue set. I have the starter set with 5 colours (a far better variation of colour choices) and they never dry. They are worse than Sennelier. I can`t paint with them without getting sticky fingers and they look kind of odd on the paper. But the tin really looks nice.
    The colour selection of this box is interesting, but I wouldn`t use it as my main box but more as a addition to a more classic set.

    They seem like very weak colors. I thought this brand was better than this, but I cannot help thinking that someone would be a lot better off buying a set of the St. Petersburg colors or even a set of Cotmans.

    No yellow? What a strange color selection! How disappointing.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  4 роки тому +1

      Yeah!! I have no idea what happened when they put that color selection together! It makes NO SENSE.

  • @vilvile
    @vilvile Рік тому +1

    For a set that is this much money, the poor design of the pan fit, the wrappers and the strange absence of yellows makes it hard to justify vs. many other great professional single pigment choices available. Said differently, I’m struggling to make a case for these paints being unique and justifying any prime.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  Рік тому +1

      I totally agree! This was such an odd set, not versatile at all. If it had had a theme and had been upfront about it, I wouldn't have minded it as much.

    I couldn't help but laugh by the time I got half way through this review.. it just got worse and worse. What a hot mess (literally with that color selection). So glad I didn't try this brand when I purchased some high end paint recently.

      Hehe! XD
      The paints themselves are good (especially the tube paints, I've added a few to this palette), but the color selection makes no sense.

  • @FuriedHearts
    @FuriedHearts 4 роки тому

    There is no excuse for the paper sticking to those pans in a professional paint brand. That is SOOOO annoying. Then, when trying to remove it, you risk wasting paint. You also risk having remnants of paper bits in your paint afterward. Not good...

  • @kriskrumanaker4315

    Problematic on so many levels. Definately not a good basic palette.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  3 роки тому

      Yeah! I added a yellow ochre and it really brought the palette together more. It's still weird, but now it's a bit better :)
      (Added their Payne's gray and neutral tint, too!)
