    They have said the name came from a badly damaged appreciation letter written by a trapper who was retelling a story of how he used the knife to Kill A Bar but all the they could make out was KABAR….something like that anyway

      No it was him thanking the company. It was smudged all they could read of "kill a bear" was "k a b a r" so they honored him by calling it a ka bar.@@100reality2

    Yup, I do and I'm from Scotland, one of my most favourite stories......
    A man was out hunting and was confronted by a bear, he had either ran out of rounds for his gun or it jammed but couldn't use it when the bear attacked, through grit and determination he survived the attack by killing the bear with his knife, a hunting knife made by an American company. The hunter was so grateful that he survived, he contacted the company that made the knife which saved his life which was Union Cutlery..... unfortunately his writing was so bad and his spelling so poor that the letter said "Kil a bar with ma nif", so kil a bar was adapted to the name we all know KA-BAR....so the knifes name was born, a legend was told and a company now has a legacy....... Ka-bar 🗡
    Now thats a legendary story told my kids and grandchildren...... short but sweet, hope i did it justice.....👍👍👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🍺🍺🍺

    Some people say KA-BAR stands for "kill a bear". Some others say it represented "Kodiac bear" KA=Kodiac, BAR= Bear. I think it is the former rather than the latter. It doesn't really matter. The fact that it is capable of killing a Kodiac bear shows the durability and strength of the knife as well as its sharpness. It is a formidable weapon and I am sure no animal will want to confront you once it sees you wielding this weapon! I own a KA-BAR and I like how powerful it feels. Just holding onto the knife builds confidence. So vicious pit bulls beware..... a KA-BAR user is here!

    1920s
    Wallace Brown receives a package that forever alters the history of the company. The story, as first published in a training manual written years later by M.L. Brown, Vice President of Sales, Union Cutlery, is as follows: "Years ago an Alaskan hunter had shot a bear who then attacked him and knocked his rifle from his hands. In order for the hunter to protect his life, he took a knife made by Union Cutlery company and successfully killed the bear, which was the Kodiak bear species. The hunter in appreciation of the knife having saved his life sent the bear skin to President Wallace Brown. The thought then occurred to the management of the company that if the Kodiak bear is the strongest of the bear species, and the word bear is pronounced "bar", and further, if the cutlery produced by the Union Cutlery Company was the best and strongest of its kind, then it should be very significant that "Ka-bar" might truly represent the qualities of the company's products. Thus the Ka-Bar trademark was adopted."

    Anyone in the know care to tackle this question? I want to buy my adult son a KA-BAR for his upcoming birthday. Foremost, I want it to be a KA-BAR (I hate to say replica) that was issued, preferably to the USMC. I'm seeing the 5 3/4 inch blade, 7 inch blade, dogs head style, serrated, and the black handled dog's head red spacer model that was apparently a WW2 issue and somewhat collectible. There are of course the engraved anniversary edition collectables also. Simply put, were the dogs head, serrated and shorter bladed models issued to Army/Marine Corps. or are they non-issue options. Are the Engraved collectors editions worth the extra? Really interested in the black dogs head red spacer model. Just want to keep it authentic issue as a collectible as I doubt he would want to use it. Thanks.

    The name is said to have come from a letter talking about how they encountered a bear and had to.use that knife to kill it, but some of the letters were messed up so it was seen as "I had to K A B ar" instead of "kill a bear" so that's what they decided to name the blade.

  • @StevanOutdoor
    @StevanOutdoor Рік тому

    First mistake. It's NOT USMC but Navy model Mark 2. Of course the USMC is Navy branch. They made a design and found contractors to produce it. So they did not make it under the Ka-Bar name because Ka-Bar was relatively late to the party with producing this. Camillus, Ontario, Western are some of the producers who where there before Ka-Bar. So if you want to teach history, get it right.
