This Kosem series is so much more darker than the first one. No laughter or joking around in the kitchen like Sumbul used to do with the Chef! This one is betrayals at every corner. Very sad to be living like that. Always at the edge of your seat wondering who is going to poison you 😢

This is actually a false presumption; women wanted to be part of the harem. They recieved the education of nobles and they did have contact with the outside world, they also lived in luxury.
Women wanted it because it was economically benefical, nobody is supposed to be a slave forever according to Islamic laws; being a slave is only temporary and slaves are to be treated humanely in Sunni Islam (Ottoman state religion).
These concubines were later released and married away to palace officials or statesmen, a lot of concubines such as Hubbi Hatun and Raziye Hatun had been released and maintained connections to Nurbanu Sultan; amongst others.
So these women were being released from the harem, in addition to having a decent life as a concubine or consort of a statesman. What more could she ask for?
Being a free woman at that time wasn't helpful, unless you were born aristocratic it wasn't exactly beneficial for any woman to be free. She could be tortured, kidnapped etc; at that time you could be a victim of domestic abuse as well.
The harem was a safe haven for women, a lot of the women there had origins related to peasantry and a majority didn't come from aristocratic backgrounds; as a result of this they were grateful for being part of the harem.
Think about the historical context and other sources about Ottoman practices before jumping to conclusions.

    • @lol4lol993
      @lol4lol993 2 роки тому +18

@@cinna_sultan I agree with you. Our modern perspective would be too irrelevant here. Being in the harem was one of the few ways to secure "luxury" and power, if not security. Of course, rife amongst concubines were prevalent, you had to be quick witted but it was far better than laboring hard for the rest of their life in a common household (unless you were born into a rich family). I'm not saying that keeping a harem of women for the sole purpose of producing "heirs" is good, but it had its own pros and cons like every other things. We mustn't forget that this very harem gave the Ottoman empire some of the greatest women (sultanas) in its history.

Very true. The contrast between both men is fascinating considering their ages and other circumstances. Ahmed was 13 and had people all around him trying to either kill him or control him. He also had a brother to deal with. Suleiman was 26, had a fair bit of experience in governance and leading an army, and most importantly he didn't have any male rivals. He had a half-brother who was not considered a threat because he was illegitimate. He was instead exiled to the farthest corner of the empire and lived a quiet life of obscurity. Ahmed and Suleiman couldn't be more different to be completely honest

It's unfair to compare Suleiman and Ahmet. Remember, when Suleiman ascended to the throne, he was 30 FREAKING YEARS OLD whereas Ahmet was a mere 13 years old tween. That alone speaks volumes.
And then, Suleiman had the sheer luck of being accompanied by Ibrahim, a capable and clever grand vizier. That made him and his throne secure. Supporting his background, were his powerful mother Valide Hafsa sultan, and also Piri Pasha an elderly judge and minister who parted significant knowledge to the Sultan, and assisted him in effectively administering his kingdom.
Now, let's come back to Ahmet. What can you expect a 13 years old to do? No matter how intelligent and brave he was, he wouldn't be able to exert Influence or threat to those adult members of his council at the palace. Besides, his generous nature made him vulnerable to power hungry pashas. He didn't have the back up of a powerful mother and Vizier. Sure, we have Derwis/Darvis pasha but only God knows how intelligent or crafty he was -- could we compare him to Ibrahim? Maybe yes, maybe no but he certainly wasn't enough to give young Ahmet, the power he needed. Last of all, Ahmet was only 27 years old when he died in contrast to Suleiman's 70+ years old age. So, you tell me who had the better opportunity to prove himself as a "magnificent ruler" ?

I think Ahmed is more like Mustafa (Sulieman's son) at some point since he was pure hearted. His relationship with Mustafa(Ahmed's brother) reminds me of Mustafa and Chihangir. Both of them are pure hearted. But Mustafa's supporters were evil and he was surrounded with trouble and alot of Powerful people. Ahmed is more blessed than Sulieman in my opinion because Allah granted him with 13 children in his 13 years of rule with Kosem who took care if them even the ones who weren't hers. Children are considered blessings. The only person who was ruling in his place was Kosem. Ahmed was lucky his woman wasn't manipulative and cruel towards his children from different concubines unlike Hurrem.

She has managed her son to survive and to get enthroned, she knows all pashas who support Safiye, so she was not dumb. When Suleiman took the throne he was 30 years old with experience in governance and war and had the backing of a powerful mother who was also a Crimean princess and also Ibrahim who was a brilliant and loyal states and he also had Piri Pasha who lent him a great amount of knowledge.
And Ahmed? Ahmed was 13 and never even got the chance to rule a Sanjak with a weak mother and very few people to him and wasn't even circumcised and when he inherited the throne it was well on its way to decline while Suleiman inherited a stable empire with no brothers to contend with. For those of you that are saying Suleiman was cruel you have to remember that suleiman ruled longer. Sultan Ahmed’s eldest was 14 when they ascended the throne so Ahmet would have no reason to kill him. Also you need to remember that Suleiman was the Sultan before a father and if he thought Mustafa was rebelling and Bayezid did rebel then you have to remove them no matter how sad you are. Also no one would expect a rebellious sultan so Bayezid wouldn’t even be the right choice. And Ahmet was also kind of evil because we forget how young he is supposed to be he is 14 right now and he looks 18. He also Locked up his brother which is worse than execution, why??? Because you lose your mind he also did a lot of weird sh!t like marry his young daughters of and then killing their husbands cuz he had no supporters. I could go on and on but you need to be cruel to be a sultan, and to be fair Sultan selim was way more cruel and absurd than his son.

The biggest difference between kosem and hurrem that made me love kosem and hate hurrem is their intentions from starting...
When hurrem came to palace, yes she was abducted and treated very badly but this doesn't make difference because most of the concubines have same history but what hurrem did was treating badly everyone who came to her way and on the very first day when nigar told her that she can be sultana if she give birth to king's baby she started doing her job. She called Suleiman by his name in corridor to catch attention then danced seductively in front of him leaving all the self-respect behind and bed with him on the first chance she got.. was it love? No way. She was just power hungry. Then she started manipulating suleman... She even told her best friend maria on first day, "not only harem i will rule the world, and you will be my daye hatun".
Now take a look on anatasia.. Her priority is her pride. She never tried to seduce ahmad even when she was told that she is specially brought for him.. she even had the courage to say her true intentions on the face to Ahmad.. she doesn't let Ahmad touch her untit she fall in love with him.. she respected every sultana in palace and didn't fight unnecessarily until she was forced to.. She didn't wanted power and proved it later by considering her step son Osman as her own son... unlike hurrem who killed Mustafa for power...
