It's not a 7-seater, it's a 5+2. the best analogy are 2+2 sports cars like the Porsche 911. If you have a family with 4 or 5 kids, and 1 or 2 of those are under 7 years old, then there might be a use case for it. An important question that I haven't seen answered in any of the reports on this option is can you fit child car seats in the back row, and does it have ISOFIX fixing points in the back row? This might be critical for potential users of this car.
Got the 7-seater M Y a couple of years ago to replace our 17 year old minivan at the time. We have four kids, all on the smaller end of the bell curve. On the rare occasions that we are all in the car together, the littles sit in the way back and the bigs sit in the middle row. It does have less cabin and hence leg room than the minivan, but it’s also not a 17 year old ICE minivan. We were willing to make the sacrifice of space for all of the other benefits of moving to a Tesla. Perfect for us at this stage in the growth of our family. When the Littles outgrow the back seats, the Bigs will have already moved on to their own cars and their own houses, probably.
Exactly why I went for the EQB, rather than a Model X (too big), a Berlingo type van (low range), or wait for the Model Y (no space). The EBQ is the Goldilocks car, it's just right, not amazing in any particular area, just good in all.
When I was a teenager with 3 sisters and a brother in the early 70s my dad had a couple of the old curvy Saab 95 (estate). They were a 7 seater (rear facing rear seats), and big enough for me in the back as a 6ft 16 year old. Things haven’t moved on much!
I’d consider a 7-seater, even one like this, purely for those times when the kids have a friend that needs picking up or taking somewhere. This is obviously not designed for long journeys, but perfectly fine for running around town for the occasional short trip with little people.
We need to see what it looks like with kids in the back. I would never consider it for 7 adults but I’ve got 3 kids and I like the thought of this car. I currently have the 5 seater model Y.
Even the most vertical challenge person would struggle to get in those back row seats. Totally pointless, who on earth would pay the extra premium for seats that are practically unusable? 😮
@bartdeking There are plenty of 7 seater cars, both EV and ICE, the model Y isn't a purpose designed 7 seater. The external form of car cannot accommodate 7 seats in a usable way, i wouldn't put my kids in the back row of a model Y, and there's zero cargo space left if you use 7 seats.
I have had my EV9 for 9 months now and covered 13000 miles … it’s a fantastic car and although pretty expensive it easily blows any other large EV out of the water from a space point of view … we have the 6 seat config and we easily transport 6 adults all over 6 foot as well as luggage in real comfort The only other option we would have held out for was the EX90 but with a predicted start price of £99,000 for the entry level model and no availability until later this year the KIA was a no brainer
My 17 yr old lad is 5'8", I'm 5'7. I then have a 12, 11, 9, 8, and 6 yr old. If I can chuck a couple of younger kids in the back and still have some boot, then it works, also have under boot and frunk. Eqb has no boot, no frunk, and a lazy conversion to an ev. The other 7 seaters are too expensive or limited range vans. I prefer the 3 but think this y will be my next buy.
It’s not inventory. They’re not made in any quantity. I doubt that you’d reliably get a 7 seat variant as fast as the 5 seat. Probably a good 4-6 week wait for Berlin to build some of them. Tesla typically has around 16 days of inventory. Which is nothing compared to most others.
Richard, you got to understand, Tesla is offering that trim because of demand. You give the customer what they want, period. The two seats are CLEARLY not for adults and the consumers who ask for them already know that. It's not for everyone clearly but for those who have small children but not 20-25k more money to buy an X, it works for them.
It was only ever intended for small kids. I don't know why people get annoyed about it. The TMS used to have an arrangement that turned small kids facing the rear, in a higher capacity version. I think people used to get a bit heated about that too.
Went to the Párìs Auto Show last week and speaking of 7 seater, the VW ID Buzz 7 seater is just so roomy for 7 tall adults, it can easily fit 7 adults of 6 foot tall and still got plenty of spaces left
Wouldnt like to be stuck in there, in case of a crash. How can this even be legal! Sitting behind the rear seats, in my dads VW1302 in the 70s, is what this reminds me of.
When did legal or complying with regulations ever stop musk from doing what he wants. Actually you should have tested whether child seats/ baby capsules can actually fit. Would you risk your child's life by situating them so close to the rear portion of the vehicle. Totally irresponsible/dangerous in my opinion.
When I bought my Y back in May I saw this 7 seater in the Tesla Store and it was ridiculously tight and all for an extra $1500. No thanks the 5 seater is great...plenty of leg room for the 3 in the back.
I would see a 7 seater as an "in an emergency" thing. Seats that stay folded down in the boot unless needed, and if needed they're for short trips, e.g. getting 5 or 6 passengers (preferably some of them kids) into a car after a party or whatever and then they can be folded away again. If they can't be folded away then make them removable. Either way, not something intended to permanently eat boot space.
Are we certain that the proposed "new" 7 seat layout is exactly what you saw 2-3 years ago? I saw some hints that the newer version for China would be different in some way. Thanks
Great video, can you perhaps do a video comparison of Tesla y 2024 and older version pre update like 2023 where we could see if they changed sound insulation and if it is jittery on the road and noisy as the old one.Since Musk said that they keep on improving their cars. Thank you.
How many 7 seat cars would have 7 adults in. Perhaps for a short journey that's all. It's designed for two adults and four kids. It fits the bill perfectly.
Loved the video. My concern with buying the EQB over the Model X is the fact that it's a far less common car. I assume that means a higher risk that the reliability is worse, but then again Mercedes is such an established brand...thoughts anybody?
I’ve had an eqb for just over 2 years now, never put a foot wrong. It’s not exceptional at anything but tends to be good at everything. Would I recommend it yes but only if you need the 7 seats.
I know there is an obsession with SUVs but I am surprised there is no market for an electric VW sharan or equivalent. The body shape is perfect for a bit battery underneath and they are difficult to beat in terms of moving people. Same with the scenic - it has been reinvented as an SUV and has lost all its key benefits.
The summary is the competition is non existent because they are all worse (even the merc) And fine the ev9 is ok but isn't impressive for its size which won't work in the uk
The company that removed passenger seat lumbar due to no one using it… Yeah I’m pretty sure the 7 seats is not a useless feature… I’m considering trading in my 2022 MY for one…the 2 extra seats are clearly only for children so headroom not an issue
We have 3 kids (7y, 4y and 10months old) and finding an EV with 5 real seats (including 3 child seat) is already tough. We curently have a C5 Aircross (3 real seats on the 2nd row) but of course it's not an EV. I was thinking about a 6 seater Model X. What else would you recommand?
Huge Tesla fan though I am, I can’t see the point in this. Tesla needs to revamp the X, simplify the design (remove the falcon wing doors) and make it available as a true 7 seater at a sub £70k price.
It's not really a 7 seat car. It's a 5+2. Same as trying to sit an adult in the back of a 911 or an Audi TT. There only good for kids under 12. Or as Bjorn would say, small Asians.
Can’t see the point of this configuration, if you want a proper 7 seater you’ll have to buy something bigger. At a stretch maybe a family with 5 young kids who only drive around with minimal luggage that fits into the frunk.

Pretty sure no isofix seat would fit in there, even if there is mounts.
A booster seat? Probably. But not even 2
You can get 2 child seats in the back of a 911, and the Model Y back seats don't really look any smaller
