- Walkthrough of my compound hunting bow setup for the 2022 hunting season. As a disclaimer, the stabilizer system was given to me in preparation for the stabilizer testing video I produced last year, but I purchased everything else shown in the video.

Yup switching back and forth between a hinge and a thumb or index allows you to punch the trigger pretty accurately! At least that’s what I’ve noticed. You’ve definitely done a lot of homework this off-season, hope it pays off for you this fall. Good luck

It is remarkable how different archers can use similar methods. I conduct the majority of my practice with index finger or thumb actuated target-quality releases, but not a hinge, as I was informed that a hinge could be fired upon command. I use these releases to perfect my shooting, but I hunt with an index style release that I can fire upon command. All the summer practice, conducted with target archer discipline, allows me to command-fire my hunting shots to great effect. Good luck this fall.
I really like that sight! What I ended up doing with my 5 pin was take the bottom 2 pins out, leaving me a 20,30,40 which kinda free up some clutter in the sight housing. I’d recommend it

Looks like a great setup. My rig this year hunting SW Georgia is a Bowtech SR6, 62# 29" draw, Vec99 Bloodline strings, Hi-Tek string stop, Shrewd front and back bars, 7/32 Hamskea Raptor peep, Vaportrail Gen7X rest, Tommy Hogg double pin, Stan Perfex thumb button, and Victory VF TKO arrows coming in at 480 grains with 175 up front. Broadheads in my quiver this fall are Tooth of the Arrow solid, Sevr 1.5, and Grim Reaper 1-3/8. I'll be saddle hunting and using a ground blind and maybe a ladder stand with my 6 year old if he wants to join me.

Good to see another video from you. Will you be doing a video on Sam’s setup. My wife might enjoy watching that one with me and it may be another step in getting her into the woods, as she is almost there. She really enjoyed some of the hunting videos with her in the last couple of years.
Great video. I have the same issue with my thumb, if I don't use a resistance release in practice I'll have issues with the thumb sooner or later.

Please make a video of the ez v vs pins. I’m coming from a single pin slider and I always screwed myself trying to mess with the dial constantly because the deer kept moving and making adjusts caused to much movement but for me I started with a 5 pin and It felt cluttered. I just bought the ez v but might not install it until after the season so I can practice a lot.
Excellent overview there Garrett. I have a PRIME BLACK 3 with the two piece Sherpa 6 slot quiver from Prime. I can take it off, but the quiver is supported by my arrows instead of a solid one piece. I have some Tethrd gear and would like to attach my bow to their accessories strap. I might have to try to make that kydex hook 🪝. I have also thought about applying the Bowmar grip tape especially for adverse weather. I am not afraid to hunt in a light to medium rain 🌧 Sometimes I like that best. 🏹🦌
Yea making a little hook for the strap is well worth it IMO. Sometimes with the Heroclip or similar I'd be afraid of the little knob at the end catching and then the whole clip lifts up with the bow. The hook slides really cleanly in and out. With that two piece quiver you'd need to make sure it extends out to the right distance to clear the arrows. Or attach a hook to the quiver hood.

Those Matthews always come out longer that lister DL. I'm shooting Elite E32, 65 lbs, 27", Montana black gold 1 pin slider, QAD hdx, 420 grain Victory v force v 1 arrow Magnus black hornet 4 blade serrazor, nocturnal green nock. I also hunt with a trigger release. set up has been devastating for me the last 3 years not changing anything.

No I haven't. I'd either need to anchor much higher or struggle with a really low point in my sight picture. One thing I learned shooting traditional is that the closer I can get the arrow to my eye, the easier instinctive aiming becomes. And even then I'm still very aware of where my arrow is in my sight picture despite my focus being on the target.
I would assume you have tried a quality thumb release? I had used a Carter Quickie plus for years, hunting & 3-d but went to a Carter Wise Choice for all my shooting. I have it set up so my thumb wraps deeply over the barrel and touches my index finger creating a loop over the barrel. This release has no travel adjustment just tension. It’s set fairly lite but not hair trigger lite. Once you get used to the feel etc. it’s the most controllable release I’ve ever used. I also switch around with a couple of hinge releases just to keep them in play. Josh Bowmar has a UA-cam vid on setting up a thumb like I explained. I’m pretty OCD about my set up, arrows, releases etc needing to be 100% correct for me. Enjoy your details in this video.👍👍
Yes I have a stan perfex also. It feels great. I thought it would be the perfect blend of advantages between a hinge or resistance and the index, but what I found was that it still had some of the drawbacks of each. If I did get punchy on the thumb, I'd get penalized more than the index. I think it's due to more manipulation of the d-loop and more hand tension, release angle etc. Whereas with the index I can relax my hand/forearm more, and the webbing connection keeps my wrist perfectly in line behind the d loop. But when I'm shooting the thumb well I do shoot it pretty well. I also liked that I could clip it on the D loop hunting. But then I was paranoid I'd bump the trigger and send it clanking down off my platform and to the ground lol.
@@DIYSportsman one thing I did that I believe helped was using only the thumb. Many hundreds of shots in various barrel positions and trigger tension adjustments. I can understand where you’re coming from with the relaxed hand etc. I would believe the more relaxed a hand ,wrist etc is the more repeatable especially when shooting up down or poor footing as in being in the field. I do my best to shoot as a relaxed wrist as possible but naturally my first two fingers are under stress holding the thing. Due to being 72 years old my limit is only 60#’s. No idea of my holding weight but I know that factor ( higher) can help get cleaner more crisp? releases. I went from 52-53 #’s this summer on ASA 3-d competition to 60#’s for upcoming hunting. I AM get better release breaks. Enjoying the chat. ( ps. lol Ivegot COVID again for the third time. So wear a mask while reading this)
Awesome set up, I finished listening to the arrow podcast too. Did you end up going with the “lighter” set up with mechanical?
Mixed quiver with sevr 1.5 and iron will wide. Final arrow weight will be around 425. I can reassess after the season but I feel pretty confident with it now.
Once I get everything set correctly, I mark every bolt with a silver sharpie. Lets me know if anything has come loose.

How were you able to know that your rest was holding the arrow too long? Also what is the optimal time?
My drop away connects as far back on the limb as it can go. I have often wounder if it was too far back
Michael Braden has a good video from about 4 months back on UA-cam that goes into rest timing and testing pretty in depth. I'd recommend watching it as it has a lot of useful background info. But then it ultimately it just takes some testing.

How do you like the Stan xtinction. Can you set the trigger tension pretty heavy?
Yes, I'm not sure what the max tension is, but it can go a fair bit higher than what I have it set at, and I've got it set heavy enough that I don't have to worry about it firing when I initially set my finger over the trigger. You do have to make sure that the travel isn't set too close to zero or it'll misfire. I had that happen and a 1/16 rotation of the travel screw fixed it. I've been pretty pleased with the crispness and feel. I haven’t tried their new models that they released this year.

Looking to buy a new front bar and back bar (not currently on bow) setup. Happen to be looking at TAP on a Matthews bow. Had a couple of questions: what weight should I start with (understanding there is no way for you to know exactly)? And Do I need to purchase the Matthews back bar connector or anything else I might not be thinking of.
The video I did last year with this same bow might be a good starting point. You'll need a third party rear bar adapter like the one from TAP or others because the one from Mathews doesn't allow you to adjust the in and out. General rule of thumb is 2-3x the weight on the back as in the front, but there's a lot of variation from there. Overall mass, holding weight, etc all plays a role. Some guys like a perfect balance and others like a bias balance that they can hold a consistent pressure against. For weights, you can either get them from the stabilizer company, or another thing I've done is use steel fender washers from the hardware store.

That last slo mo clip looked like your arrow was rotating clockwise. I believe that video exodus put out not long ago said something like 97% of all factory strings cause a counter clockwise spin. Are you shooting an aftermarket string and if so, what manufacturer?
It's spinning counter clockwise. It's just spinning fast enough that it's difficult to see. It's a 3 fletch at left 2.5deg. I'm just using the stock Zebra string and cables from Mathews.
@@DIYSportsman i had to get glasses in 3rd grade and im 39. My eyes arent getting any better lol. My brother ordered right bevel single bevel heads. He is worried about the broadheads trying to unscrew on impact if its spinning counter clockwise. Any thoughts on that? Thats why its on my mind.
@@joehorton01 I've not tried left single bevels, but with double bevel heads it hasn't been much of an issue. A little wax on the threads can help keep the head from unlocking. Or another trick that works really well, especially if you have HIT inserts, is to screw the head into the insert, and then use hot melt to slide the whole assembly into place. Then it doesn't budge.

Nose button still work on longer or steep angles?
Yes, but it might shift. For instance if I use my slider to shoot longer shots then my head is in a slightly different position and the button rests on my nose a little differently, but I'm still able to use it as a consistency reference and monitor my facial pressure.

ATA, brace height, Draw length, cam mods, Limb bolt turns out from max, actual peak draw, actual measured holding weight, Cam timing, stabilizer bar length and number of ounces on each bar, peep distance from top cam, peep to nose button, nock location, amount of serving thread under the nock, d loop length, string stop info, rest cord tie in point

I would hate to have that super long stabilizer keep bumping into branches everytime I tried to shoot a deer. What do u think of the bomar nose button? I used it last yr. And it did alright. But you really can't feel it with a thicker head covers. Not gonna go with the ezv? Yah, I sold mine!
I find that the stabilizer overall does ok for me in most scenarios EXCEPT some of my ground hunts when I have both front cover and back cover. In those cases I do take the front bar off, but usually my shot opportunities are 10-20 yards in that scenario and I can get by without it. Overall I think the nose button is a net positive. Like you, I don't notice it as much with a face mask on. In fact, when I got to full draw on my 2019 buck, I thought, crap I didn't pull my facemask down... but ultimately was still able to align the peep. I know Randy Ulmer has talked about the back half not needing to be perfect as long as that alignment is maintained and there's not excessive face pressure. So in that regard the nose button generally allows me to hit that good peep alignment with little conscious thought.
I shoot a 15" front bar and never had a issue.
@@DIYSportsman so you use a peep with a nose button? Maybe that was my problem last year! I thought it eliminated one.
@@mr.skeptical3071 Yes I use both. I tried ditching the peep and went back after a couple days. When I'd shoot one day I'd shoot a tight group at distance, but then a different day come back, maybe under different lighting conditions, and the group would move.

Alright dude, it’s 10:30pm and I did have a couple beers tonight, but I swear I seen your arrows spinning counter clockwise. Am I losing my mind? Or are you just that dialed that you have yours spinning that way? I’ve heard that is the natural way they want to go & most of us force them to go clockwise. I know you to know your gear so I trust what you say
Yes I have the vanes fletched with a left offset. I can't measure that it makes an actual difference, but it does give me a little more confidence especially if using big fixed blade heads because the side profile normalizes earlier in flight. With smaller 3 or4 blade heads or mechanicals it likely doesn't make much of a practical difference.
How come you stopped using the EZV?
Mostly just what I mentioned in the video. I don't like it as much for target or 3d, which requires me to switch sites around through the course of the year.

No it's a grunt tube. I just got tired of throwing it in my pack somewhere and taking it in and out each sit, often to never use it. So I just attached it to where I can tilt my head down and use it with minimal movement if needed

Why add another sting with limb driven rest? One more thing to snag, move, adjust. I bet that goes away in the next couple years unless they can "tunnel" the string internally. Same with floater, single pins for hunting. Movement is so detrimental.
Yea it would be awesome if they can design a cord free dropaway. I have a cable driven rest on my wife's bow right now. And keep a whisker biscuit on one of my backup bows. I think a fixed (non-slider) 3 or 5 pin is great for whitetail. Just limiting on the summer practice at distance.

I used to just keep binos in my pack. Eventually I changed to using the minimalist Rick Young style harness. And then I eventually changed to the full bino harness. When it gets cold enough for heavy layers, I still often keep binoculars off my body and in a pack or on a hook, but I’ve grown to like how I can have certain accessories even apart from the binos, like milkweed or gear strap, etc, in a really easy to reach consistent spot. Mostly just preference.
@@DIYSportsman I was running a similar chest rig for a while and found it often made me sweat heavily behind it. Any similar experiences with that chest rig?
