How to Fit a Pull-up Bar in a Doorway

- In this video I'm showing you how to fit a pull-up bar in a doorway. This is a really simple DIY video to ease us in to the new year. Unfortunately the instructions that came with this pull-up bar are absolutely hopeless. Apparently this particular bar is suitable for doorways from 65 to 85cm but I would take anything these instructions say with a pinch of salt. I have no idea whether this particular pull-up bar is any good but here's a link to it. Don't blame me if it falls on your head.
Here's some affiliate links to the pull-up bar I'm using - read more about affiliate links at the bottom of this description:

Mine arrived with the extendable pieces tighter than a nuns gash, anyone know how to loosen this 🤔
Thank you! My pull up bar came with only three instructions and it was on the side of the box! I had no clue what to do! This video is super helpful!
Oh!... I have that exact pull-up bar too. Those are good and are mainly package in China that's why we didn't get instructions.
I think we bought the same 😅🤣
Thank you. I was so lost when i saw the instructions for my pull up bar. THANK GOD FOR UA-cam.
Thanks man.
Got the idea.
Ordered a similar one. First I thought of ordering one without the side bits to install but after seeing your video decided to order the one with the side bits to give more safety to the bar.
Hope you are making full use of it in this lockdown. Thanks.
Good choice, people have actually been killed using the ones that just push onto the side of the frame. Some countries have even banned them
"The instruction that came with the pull up bar is complete nonsense"😂😂😂
At least they had some, mine didn't include any
@@lucas33253 same lol
@@lucas33253 yeah, the reason why im here lol
Lol i love the way he chuckles a bit 1:00 to 1:40 😂❤️ sounds adorable
Careful using these!A guy I know was using one and it came loose while he was pulling up. He dropped to the ground and hit in such a way that it damaged his spine, paralyzing him from the neck down. Freak accident, I know.
thanks for this information holy cow I was always wondering about these kind of accident.
He fell on his head and broke his neck? Are you sure his paralysis went that high up?
Excellent instructions, thank you. Nice to see that doorways in the UK are level. In the USA, not so much.
I think the point of the bar is that it's portable, you can use it for sit ups also if you just adjust it and attach it lower down on the frame, holds fine for me without using screws.
Nice work bud. I remember putting one of these up 15yrs ago when I was 14, never got ripped aha but by 16 had to take it down as I was 6ft 4 with no ripped body but lovely bruising to head 😂
Lol - yeah, limit on this is about 6ft 2 I reckon before head injuries start. 😂
@@GosforthHandyman must of shaken my brain as it's taken me years to realise that being a handyman is something I enjoy and with watching alot of your videos it's given me the leap to start my own business so I must say thank you very much for the inspiration and keep up the great work. P.s not going into this blind and have done plenty of research for the area and have refurbished 9 full properties up in the past 5yrs so thank you again
I used friction all the time for about 2 years, because of that i broke my 2 best artworks and slamed my back on the ground so listen to tis guy it wil save a couple of headeges
A few numbers. If one follows the instructions and relies upon friction between the rubbery ends of the bar and the door frame, then the friction coefficient will not exceed 1 (unless the rubber chemically adheres to the frame). This means the sideways force on the door frame must be about the weight of the pull-up person plus whatever safety margin one might build in to cope with the ‘impulse’ associated with the pull up.
You’re definitely right about the screws. 😇
Defo - I'm amazed they can get away with saying this! 😂👍
the friction on most ones holds up to a 100kg. the point of not using the brackets is that you can use it for multiple heights. it's friction and pressure that will hold it once you really twist and secure it. Good looking cracks btw.
Not worth it, just get 2 pairs and install them with support. If you're relying on the friction alone without support: 1) You're guaranteed to fall from the friction losing its grip sooner or later, and you can occur life-devastating injuries (like being paralyzed). 2) You'll destroy your door frame by squeezing it tightly everytime.
all kids here don't want to use the mounting brackets. this dude is right he mounted them properly. this is safe
A level door frame, that's the best joke you have ever made! lol
Lol... one day I'll post a vid with some pics of the best 'unlevel' door frames I've seen. 😂
💯
Thank you. This video was detailed ,informative and helpful. I’m a Single female and if I can install my own bar so can you!
i'd use bigger and longer screws for sure. especially for something like this that's weight-bearing and under frequent use. if it's ornamental, those screws would be fine, but this is a functional item. in a lot of civil engineering projects, for example, they always over-estimate the use and wear of certain components and have a lot of redundancies to ensure safety. so if they build a highway that can carry X number of cars, they'll design it so that it can support 1.5-2X the intended load, and build multiple support systems in case one, two, or a few of them fail.
Thanks matey, my one arrived the other day and the instructions were nonsense too😄 all thanks to your video I'm going to put mine up tomorrow. Appreciate your time sharing this.🙏
Im 12 and i am getting this for me cuz i have growing pain and it is suppost to help
I cant wait 😀😀😀👍🏼
Not sure about growing pain but you would be strong af by the time you 15
I probably won't purchase a static pull-up bar like this one, but I surely had a great laugh watching this video.
Thanks alot for showing the complete installation.
Fire workout in the end, love it
😂😂😂😂
I was confused by the rubber pads. This was funny, thanks for the laugh. I also thought those adverts were a bit misleading lol.
Hahaha you are great; this was the best instruction video ever. I laughed a lot at the beginning and did the job at the end. Greetings from Argentina
I'm pretty sure that lots of people use these without drilling into the door frames. Or at least that's what all the fails videos I have seen would suggest xD
Too right - £250 from You've Been Framed (pardon the pun) in the bag! 😂
@@GosforthHandyman Oof, the dad jokes are strong with you :p
i......i also tried it without drilling into the door frame and i felt like a fool lul
@@GosforthHandyman Thanks for the great video. I dont know much about drilling devices. What kind of drill would I need to install a pull up bar and would it be fine if i drilled in into a wall ?
@@aljowen Dad jokes? You're one depressed male feminist!
the ending got a genuine laugh out of me. Great video very helpful.
youre lucky mine came with no instuctions at all thanks for the video!!!
I really appreciate the metal track over your pump sess.
While the Amazon image is definitely disproportioned, the door frame must be about about 40 inches wide (way outside the specs for this unit) what is interesting in the shot is the width of steel showing either side of the centre section. The images of the bar on the American Amazon site are different from those on the UK site and show all the width adjustments on the ends. Does each padded section on either side of the central pad also rotate to open this gap or is all the width adjustment done with the end sections? It would make sense if it did as it would reduce the end adjustments and allow a fitting that would put the load closer to the door frame. In an 85cm opening a person with a wider elbow to elbow spread would be able to make a forward grip correctly. Remember that the reverse hold on a pull up bar with which Andy used as a demonstration, requires a narrower hold than that required to do a forward hold (as the Amazon guy is doing). I'm with Andy on his fitting. I certainly would not want to see anyone using it on a friction only fitting! Because it can be fitted that way does not mean it should.
Cheers Rob! It only adjusts from the ends - doesn't adjust from the middle at all. The pics on the UK Amazon link look like more PhotoShopping nonsense to me - hadn't noticed that! 😂 Mine looks exactly like the pics on the Amazon US version. 👍
GREAT dad
Thanks brother. I received it without instructions haha.
Great for hanging shirts on hangers, no creases!
My thoughts exactly! 😂
@Gosforth Handyman Thats what my other half did to me so i bought another one to use on our toilet door frame beying a through root with a towel rack its now impossible for her to sabotage my long lost fitness lol. Its finally in heres the proof ua-cam.com/video/PIvB2fAwjDk/v-deo.html
You don't have to drill the frame. the vacuum does the work. But, the only problem is that during the exercise you might accidently slightly rotate the bar in the "wrong direction" and eventually it might fall off
Nice video
7:04 actually in another video it shows what the small black ones are for , that so the bar can be put in the middle of the door. For top use metal brackets. For very bottom, no need can just excercise with friction
For like tricep dips?
@@santiagof5511 yeah
What a stunning good looking cracks in the door jam 😍
Thank from Saudi Arabia.
My bar only came with one bracket which makes it totally useless. As soon as any weight is placed on bar it falls straight away. Great video.
This pull up machine is long lasting and Dose not break wile chin up pull up for 75 kg male weight?
I have the same, I didn´t drill any holes on it. It works perfectly fine. I´m about 80 kg.
I'm 115kg will this hold me I just got one from Amazon.
Daniel Silveira is it working fine for you?
@@fantastick8943 Yes so far so good i got this one on Amazon I'm in Miami 🇺🇸 Garren Fitness Maximiza Plus Pull Up Bar it's out of stock now i think.
Daniel Silveira I just bought the same one from this video and do you think I should buy my own screws? And if so what are the measurements because I’m new to all this :(. Sorry for all these questions, I don’t wanna break myself using this lol.
@@fantastick8943 At first I got this bar but it wasn't sturdy enough because i had to fully extended so i got the larger bar the one i mentioned it could hold more weight extra 30lbs versus the previous one.I'm new to all this too I didn't even had a powerdrill so I got one just to install the bar and to finally have one at home I went to homedepot to get the screws this man described apparently they gave me something similar but not the same. So I just used the ones that came with the bar. I'm a heavy guy i only use the bar during days that I do my back exercises the rest of the exercises I home i do using my Bowflex dumbbells wich I'm glad I got them long ago before all this madness. But so far the bar is fine u should be ok too. What is your body weight?
In regards to always using the screws. Yes, my son had a bar that was designed not to need screws. It works good until one day when the bar let go and he broke his knee. Lesson learned, alalways mount the bar
Thanks for the video, on Amazon they say no screws
Thanks for teaching me what my dad would not lol
please help i followed these exact steps but whenever i try doing pullups my bar spins around and i dont know how to stop that.
I'd recommend the kind that hooks on top of the architrave on the other side, and braces against the sides of the frame on the side you stand.
I wouldn't trust hanging anything off architraves but if it's firmly braced on the frame it should be fine. Assume architraves can handle zero load. 👍😀
I used one of those for years when I first started, no issues
Badly written instructions, I agree, however they are totally usable without screws and damaging the frame. Infact it's using them that tightens them against the door. When you do a pull up, your palm is facing you, and it's turning the rod palm side down. Because the threads on each end are opposite to each other, doing the pull-ups from one side would loosen the ends, but from the other side tightens the ends against the frame. So as long as you face the right way, your pull up is tightening the bar against the frame, easily holding up your weight. The reason the screws are needed when hanging a bag or swing is that they don't turn the rod like your palms do.
I really, really, really wouldn't recommend this. Why *wouldn't* you screw it to the frame?? 😬
I love this guys comedy
Thanks and Recommended for all
There are tiles under my doorframe so if it’s not screwed on right I gonna be in the hospital🤣
11:59 @ I can see the wires!
Ha ha, luckily I didn't have to do too many takes of that. 😆
What wires ?
Andy, I thought it would be important to point out that you have some cracks in your door frame! Perhaps you could make a video about repairing them. Oh, and don't lie, that bar is for you, not your daughter. LOL.
Ha ha - thank you Mark!! 😂😂👍
as a kid in school we used a chin up bar that was standard and didn't use the frame brackets and it worked fine for the 480 kids that used it ,and it never came down. these frame brackets keep the manufacture out of a lawsuit.
My instructions weren’t bad, they don’t exist. Not in the box, on the box, or attached to the bar.
Hello, can i ask you if there's a way without ruining the door?
I do enjoy your sense of humour. Is this the start of another channel? 'The Gosforth Muscleman' perhaps ;)
Ha ha - there's an idea!! I haven't set up a new channel this year yet! 😂👍
Thank you brother.
Like you, I usually chuck out the screws that come with stuff. I fitted one of these things a year ago. Didn't take much tightening of the bar to start to push the door casing apart.
Yep, anything like this - step one, ditch included fixings. 😁
Indeed - I wish I'd kept the screws to do a strength test on them! Never mind. 😀
@Gosforth Handyman At 6:56 the black plastic piece is for situp bar low locator mounts on your frame my friend, its as if all these companies that ripped off the original design have neglected to understand the full concept of the originals simplicity so they put an extra screw hole in the centre of the bar locator cups for it to make sense. (At least you cant loose it that way if not used but it would be nice if the destructions knew what it was originally for?) Then added a 2nd screw mech to ruin the quick no fuss interchange between the 2 positions. I must be getting old they dont make things like they used to lol. Just out of curiosity did it tell you how much bar clearance you should have from the top, because i made & fitted door stop width infills filled & painted to suite then discovered inversion boots i cant use without lowering the bar & making longer door stop infills. Anoying as f**k but all usefull things they neglect to state. I probably should have just pushed the mount cups to the door stop in a row then marked out 3rd space down both sides with top cup for simplicity? Having to relly on hindsight is not a best fit guide for clearance of knuckles feet & head lol. So they just neglected to bother. This was all years before covid lock down & the Hertfordshire council or local gym removed the 4 pull up bars from the park! When its gone & your locked up inside you truely miss it, like they want us to wither & die or join the gym with no income? As you can tell im not happy about the NWO.
Merry christmas
Just get a Perfect Pullup bar or similar that hangs on the doorway. No screws and (in my experience) no damage to the door frame. Easily removed when you're not using it. I've done thousands of pull-up's on mine over the years. It also has options for different grips. $30 and 5 minutes assembly and you're done.
Relying on the architrave is very risky - sometimes they're only held on by a couple of small nails. Just be careful! 👍
Lmao at the soundtrack for his pull-ups hahhahahhahhahha
I have a similar pull up bar and i never screwed it. I've been using it for over 2 years and it never fell I only twisted it into place
With the Model on Amazon page was so funny 😂
My pull up bar slipped down for some reason when i was using it normally, and i fell to the floor, and omg my butt kinda hurts. Should i still use it? Kinda scared tbh (my pull up bar has no screws btw)
Yes, keep using your butt
Greetings from Bulgaria. I would like to ask you about the tape measure that you are using. Brand, where to buy etc. I`m looking for such tape measure for a long time.

hilarious obseravtion on the amazon prmotional pictures, nice video anyway ..
Very useful video, thank you. Btw, you are incredibly strong.
Tell the truth and shame the ads...
Thank you for sharing...
Lol exactly. 😂
The little plastic bits are to go near the bottom of the door so you can do sit ups
Oh, and not use the metal rings? Yeah, you might be right. 😂👍
@@GosforthHandyman use the metal cups on the top for pull ups and the plastic ones are used at the bottom of the door to do sit ups ( I have a old bar and that's what my instructions said and I have been using it for over 15 years)
Thanks! I boguht one of these pull up bars and I wasn't able to set it up. Now I see that the problem is that there are some missing parts. :(
Mine too! I dont have the screws 😡
Thanks for the video, BUT I disagree about the need to secure it with screws. I recently bought an identical model from ProsourceFit (it came with no instructions, so I watched your video). I simply held it up in my doorway at the proper height, turned the center part of the bar while holding the end sections until it was nice and snug against the door jambs. It easily holds my 150 lbs. while doing multiple pull ups. If worse comes to worse and it loosens over time and drops me to the ground, I will fall an entire 12 inches. I think I can survive that ;-)
You really help me man thx
ty this helped me
Good luck on using the bar I prefer the gym my shoulders are the same width as a door frame, hope you get lots of use from it
Cheers bud! It's mainly for my daughter - she does a lot of gymnastics stuff and does leg lifts. I tried doing one leg lift but nothing happened. 😂👍
I prefer a wide are grip.
Regarding not over-tightening the bar.... won't the use of the bar, over time, tighten it? Or loosen it? Depending on which way you are facing? I am imagining that there is some rotational force on the bar when using it.
We are needing to get a bar for our daughter for physiotherapy use at home and trying to decide what type of bar to get that will be the right mix of ease of installation and safety.
Great video, but my problem is getting the bar back off the frame it having been hung for about ten years. Any tips?
I have the same problem, it's impossibile to get it off.
Can we use it without drilling the door ???
Yes you can, but the rubber would shrink by time
Three years later, is it still holding and do you still like it's quality?
I just recently got a door bar and it didnt come with the 2 silver caps that go on the door for some reason
The instructions in these things are always.. Always... Invariably pure piffle😆
Anyone know how to stop pull up bar from spinning? It keeps spinning when I try to do pull up and the door cracked a little, cuz the bar expanded.
Adam Mooney mate this requires a drill to attach it
Thanks for it very heelpful
UHH IT FELL ON MY HEAD
Nice cracks :)
this is a funny video. Thanks for the instructions though.
What's the type for the drill do you use sir? Can you share the link of the product?
Video Starts 3:20
Thank you 👌👌👌
Nah that's no good Andy. I would bang my head on that going through the door. I am the inverse of the fella in the Amazon picture 😁
Ha ha, yeah - I still duck every time I walk under it. 👍
I got this exact pull up bar this christmas its great
It seems great! Does the job! 👍
thx
Hey there, I tried to find the answer but I have not enough time 😂... I see comments on those cracks in the frame but I don't see the answer, or at least it looks like you said somewhere they are due to that being a new building etc... I actually realized I caused those, by using the bar with no screws hence applying more pressure on the frame. I don't care about aesthetics; my concern is more: are they going to stay as they are, or is there a chance the more I use the bar, the worse they get until everything collapses, including the building next to ours? I just changed door and instantly the same cracks appeared. Thank you
Andy would love to see a video on how to fix things to internal UK hollow doors such as robe hooks. I tried using the Fischer DuoPower but there is not enough to grip onto and they just spin.
2:50 5'6 supremacy i definitely can do that pull up in my dooorway
Shite instructions and screws, great video well explained 👍👍
can these screws be used on a wall?
This did damage to my door frame unfortunately
I didn't even get the screws and the holder where you put the screws in, i always used the rubber only and it fucked up my doorframe
This thing brooke my wall because it was too tight
You'll not remember Charles Atlas from the back of the News of the Screws Andy, and I don't mean the Screwfix deals flier ...
