I dig playing them. They are a fun guitar to play sitting on the couch watching tv just riffin away. I'm a die hard fender player but if I stray away I play a gretsch
I grew up playing Fender and Gibson guitars and I have wanted to add a Gretsch for many years! With the pandemic, I decided that it was finally time to get my gretsch on! I have the g5420t in red sparkle. It's TRUE what they say about the sound and playability. I put medium jazz weight strings on it, on clean channel with a little reverb, the mid range is so rich sounding! compared to my other guitars! Think George Benson, Brian Seltzer, stray cat strut, etc. I justify the purchase by comparing guitars to household floor care, seriously. One needs, brooms, mops, and vacuum cleaners to do the job. Gibson, Fender, and Gretsch, all have their own unique voices! Everyone stay safe and well, keep the music playing! 💕💕🎵🎵

That Gretsch is to die for! Love the color, and especially love the tone! The Jazz Master it was nice too, but I’ve never felt the urge to even pick one of these up. I had a Squire Jaguar and even with an upgraded Mastery bridge never used it. I think the Gretsch would be a different story, specially one without a vibrato!
When I was a teenager, all the boys I knew if they maintained an 80 plus grade average on their birthday they got a beautiful white jazz master with a white pick guard. Because Strats were consider too "low class" for all the boys I knew...another place and time folks
I had a Gretsch in the past, loved the sound, could play almost anything (except things that required "twang"). Planning to buy another one in the future, but semihollow this time, even though I also have a Jazzmaster in my sights. I really like guitars with a warmer sound.
Love these A / B guitar tests, but would love to see a different slant. Instead of keeping all amps and effects the same to see what difference the guitar makes, it would be interesting to see how close you could make different guitars achieve the same tone by changing amp settings.
Unlike Darrell, I was actually playing a Jazzmaster almost 50 years ago - bought a used '68 in 1972. To this date was the lowest action on any guitar I have ever owned and it played like a dream. Could do 4 hour gigs every weekend without any hand fatigue and it sounded perfect for doing 50s and 60s rock. Made a huge mistake when I sold it when I was in college and needed money!
I can agree Dennis this was my first professional guitar, when I was 16 years old, I fell in love with this instrument, sound, body shape and low action playability, hats off to this great instrument, got this guitar in about 1962 👍🏼🎸

I bought recently a G2420t and I absolutely love it. I play it more than my fender MIM telecaster, my MIM fender Strat and my black beauty Les Paul. The tone and warm is amazing. The setup was spectacular for such a low price. Gretsch are amazing instruments and watching the gretsch of this video makes me wanna have a higher end one because I love the looks. One thing though is that they do get feedback frequently and I wouldn’t recommend any kind of gain with the full hollow body. There’s a semi hollow that has less issues.
Between the two Id choose the Jazzmaster. Strats and Teles have a lot of famous players and musical styles attached to them. When you pick up a Jazzmaster, there's less implication, more inspiration.
Both! Don't make me pick! But if I have to...for the music I play, I'd have to give the edge for the tones to the Jazzmaster. Have played neither though, but I'm a small person so that Gretsch might be a bit physically overwhelming. Enjoyed the comparison. Thanks!
I'm a little late to the game, but I like both of these guitars. I've been looking for an American Ultra Jazzmaster for its tone options with the noiseless P90 pickups, etc. And I like the Gretsch for its filtertrons and the Bigsby. Oh, and I love the intro to this video! 🙃 👍 ♥

Good sounds for sure! I just placed an order for the G&L Doheny yesterday and can’t wait to play. I’ve been stuck with the same traditional guitars for years but now that I’m getting old feel like I need to experiment with more tonalities! D, love the channel.
A lot of people didn't like the jaguar either, but I did. The gretsch style got popular with the byrds, Crosby stills & nash, etc.... Things always have a way of coming back around.
Love my Gretsch but it was made by Fender. They have been made by Fender for almost twenty years. Gretsch still owns the name but has an agreement If you mentioned that, I missed it. The Gretsch you’re demonstrating looks like the one used by Rolling Stone, Brian Jones.
I just bought my first Jazzmaster early this year. So comfortable to play, and the rhythm circuit give some cool tonal opportunites. Would love to own a Gretsch once day too - one of the semi-hollow models with the double cutaway.
Nice video as always, informative with cool tones and riffs, and I'm glad you're giving that Jazzmaster some love! Now some information of my own; You can totally play Jazz in a solid body guitar. A good Jazz tone is all about a nice clean amp with lots of headroom and some good mids and no break-up at all, you want to stay as clean as possible. Just use the neck pickup and lower the tone a lil bit if you're using single coils, and stay away from high gain humbuckers. Mixing the neck and middle position on strats is also good for those solos and fusion styles. Now on Gretsch; Most Gretsch guitars today are meant for Rockabilly. Filtertrons are brighter than humbuckers or P90s, and some of these guitars even have a Bigsby, you're never gonna hear a vibrato bar in Jazz. But some Gretsch archtops are Jazz machines! just take a look at the pickups, filtertrons are smaller than regular humbuckers, and just because the humbucker covers have cutouts doesn't mean they're filtertrons.
Jazzmaster looks much more comfortable, and I bet you could get close to Gretsch tone by just rolling the tone back a bit. That said, I think that Gretsch smoke green color is a very very good thing.
I have a g5420t with the new Filter'trons. I love it. Such nice tones, really gets that gretsch sound, love the look and big neck. Had to fix the common issue of G,B,E bridge buzz, but that was about 30 minutes and 0 dollars, so totally worth it.
Darrell pulls off a sweet move with his pick at 4:12. At first I wasn't sure if he was show-boating or just dropped his pick and it landed there, but slow it down to 0.25 speed, and there's some finger work going on. Pretty slick, and specific to that style of pick guard.
Great video comparison! If I could only have one I'd for sure take the Gretsch it sounds awesome and its a beautiful guitar! That green color is lovely too, just a "purty" guitar! That being said though after hearing how good that Jazzmaster sounds that looks like it could be an eventual addition to the guitar stable! Thanks DBG! :-) definitely two cool guitars...
Excellent comparison vid Darrell.I bought a brand new Single Anniversary in 1963, same two tone green as yours. Man I wish I still had that guitar. Maybe I’ll trade in my Bonnie Raitt Strat for a new double p u Anniversary.
I'm actually in the market for one of these two guitars, so I was very happy to come across this video. You've got me leaning towards the Gretsch, which I never in my guitar-playing life thought I'd say! Although, I'm definitely gonna go for one with a Bigsby and possibly HiLoTron pickups.
I am biased for Fender. I have a 1962 Precision Bass. But my lead player has a 1968 Gretch 12 string. They are both great instruments. I also have a Gretch Resonator acoustic.
I built a jazzmaster. Gfs body/all parts neck. Fenders 62 pickups. 3 way switch . I put 9.5 radius American bridge . Tuning is stable, very comfortable radius It's a twang machine, but can be very bright. I play it more than my gretsch these days. Love it
I have the Gretsch Diamond Anniversary. Bought it used at a music store in Downey CA, back in 1972. Traded in a single pickup Gretsch which I bought at a pawn shop. The Diamond Anniversary model has been so universally usable. Perfect weight and more apt to be thrown in the car and go than my Gibson ES-347 or my solid body Gibsons or Fenders. This Gretsch has seen a lot of years and miles and still sounds as good as the day I bought it.
Oh, no! You’re asking me to choose? I have a Gretsch semi-hollow (6119 Tennessean) and just can’t seem to put it down. So another Gretsch with that full hollow resonance, and Filtertrons is a really attractive idea. But the slinky JM that hugs your body and sounds so sweet is a real distraction! Both?
I would go with the Gretsch, I have a strat, vintage series it's a reissue of a 62 made in the Corona factory. I love my strat but I've always wanted a gretsch for that warmer tone you mentioned. I also would like to play without plugging in. The jazz master is a beautiful looking and playing guitar and I would probably choose it if I had to choose, all guitars gently weep, Fenders gently scream, sorry for being so windy.
I'd add the Gretsch all the way to my collection (same color too!) Love your humor. I don't know if you caught Guitar MAX making a reference to you in a past video by something like "Dahreel Bruh-u-wan" or something like that. Great stuff as usual. God bless and rock on Dahreel! ;-)
Great video Darrell! Funny story here... A month or so ago I bought a 2017 Gretsch G5422TG and a 2016 Fender Classic Player Jazzmaster Special (mim) on the same day! T'was a good day! 😎 😎 😎
Good Comparison, I think you need to roll the volume off a click in the jazzmaster...sounds a bit thin and overly bright. Quirk of Jazzmaster, with the volume wide open, the tone control doesn't function well, and the pickups feel scratchy and bright at all tone settings. Roll the volume to 8.5, and the tone control becomes incredibly responsive.
I'll take the Gretsch. The first American guitar I bought was a WELL used Anniversary model. Some kid had taken a saw to the 12th fret. But it does bring back memories, and it worked fine. I thought at the time the color was hideous but now I miss it.
Hey Darrel pretty good video man, great to see these 2 compared! You got so many nice guitars is crazy, and it really shows you take good care of them! I am from Costa Rica and theres really no top tier guitars here. And if they were here would be so expensiiive. Send over your collection over so we got something to see here!
I actually have an orange sunburst jazzmaster and love it. It plays great and it really does have a different tone compared to other guitars. It os also very versatile.
Jazzmaster and Gretsch - Jazzmaster was the sound of the early The Cure albums and the Gretsch was the sound of the late 80's early 90's Cure albums. So I'd happily take both thanks. ;) (I will conveniently ignore the use of Gibson, National, Moserite and the odd Tele for convenience sake).
I would prefer the Gretsch only because I can't warm up to solid body guitars. I own a Godin 5th Ave Kingpin II (P90s) and love it! I would still pick it over the Gretsch as well. Love your videos and keep it up!!! Great stuff! Thank you!
I love your videos. Could you add more information on the neck shape? I am a fan of the "baseball bat" necks and would really enjoy a series on options.
I bought a midnight blue GT 427 garage back in July of last year I can’t tell you how much I love this guitar. For the money this is beautiful so beautiful guitar beautiful hard shell case to put it in Gretchen makes beautiful guitars and so does fender I have a fender, new Porter acoustic, and I am thinking about buying one of the new Squier guitars For the money you can’t go wrong. Thanks for the video. Have a great evening.👍🏼🎸😊😀
I've really been wanting the Jazz Stratocaster because I don't like the way the Jazzmaster feels but I love the sound. I play strat style guitars for the feel and that Jazz Strat sounds like a dream to me!
Jazzmaster + Gretsch Duo Jet The sound of Superunknown (Soundgarden). Chris recorded every guitar with those. Jazzmaster for the beyond weird tunnings.
I really don’t think the jazzmaster pickups were designed to be bright. Leo was trying to make a jazz guitar, and the wider flat coils were his way of capture a fuller sound. He was most likely trying to get closer to a paf sound. It didn’t really work though. However, they are the warmest, fullest sounding of the Fender single coils. He designed the jaguar pickups to be brighter and more jangley, not the jazzmaster.
I love both of these guitars and purchased both a jazzmaster (squier) and gretsch (electromatic). For anyone out considering- these rock! Now, if you step on a budget and not sure if the jazzmaster is your guitar- go with the Classic Vibe series by Squier!! It will best the sound of lower end Fender. I have both the Jazzmaster and Jaguar in the CV series- for the money, you can't beat it!! The Gretsch is just what Darrell said in his video and again, if you want to check out s lower end and save some cash, the Electromatic(I think Korean made?) Is excellent for a jumping in point to this beauty of a guitar!
I like my Gretsch but my Jazzmaster is much more flexible and comfortable with whatever style is thrown at it. Very different from Strats and Teles I love the clean tones that pour out of it. Took me a long time to fall in love with the offset design but it is so comfortable whether sitting or standing.
Be prepared to pop the strung back in place on the Jazzmaster on hard bends. I have both, but at the end of the day it is what it is- a Fender is a Fender and a Gretsch Amp. Gretsch- Gibson based sound. Both are incredibly fun guitars if you have the right setup and amp.
If you could add one of these guitars to your collection, which one would it be?
Keep watching to the end for Dereel Brohan's reaction to me trying to "mainstream" these guitars lol!

Gretch, easily, because of the dirty tone. At least based on how it sounds on my phone.

I don't get why people don't like the Jazzmaster shape, I fell in love the first time I ever saw it
Must admit, I didn't at first and for a long time after. Perhaps it's the blatant lack of any attempt at symmetry. I do love it now though
People just have their preferences. I’ll fully admit that I originally hated the telecaster shape, but I’ve grown to like it
Same here. I remember when I was 14 and I saw Taylor York's white jazzmaster, I fell in love instantly
It’s comfortable asf too, has a belly cut
I just don't like it's horrible pictures on it. White
That Gretsch sounds really good. I'd go with the Gretsch.
The Jazzmaster has a Bigsby and the Gretsch doesn't? Is that what hipsters do? ;-)

Since there is a lot of people addressing Jazzmaster pickups as P90, I think it’s hipster enough to know they are single coils.

My uncle was/is a jazz player and his favorite guitar was a jazz master, second was a 335.
This video for me is like Martin Gore vs Adrian Utley, no hipsters)
Finally someone gets why I’m here lmao
Martin’s an absolute legend
I have a squier jazzmaster with 2 humbuckers and it is my main guitar, it is hardtail and I like how simple it is, just 1 vol, 1 tone and one selector
Tuning is stable, very comfortable radius
It's a twang machine, but can be very bright.
God bless and rock on Dahreel! ;-)
Gretsch
Great video Darrell! Funny story here... A month or so ago I bought a 2017 Gretsch G5422TG and a 2016 Fender Classic Player Jazzmaster Special (mim) on the same day! T'was a good day! 😎 😎 😎
Can't stress enough how much I love every UA-camr doing bits.
I've got a 2019 classic vibe jazzmaster, love it
Love them both but prefer the sound of the Gretsch, seems to have a bit more bite in the E and B strings. Thanks for the vid.
The clean neck pickup on the Gretsh is absolutely beautiful
I'll take the Gretsch. The first American guitar I bought was a WELL used Anniversary model. Some kid had taken a saw to the 12th fret. But it does bring back memories, and it worked fine. I thought at the time the color was hideous but now I miss it.
Hey Darrel pretty good video man, great to see these 2 compared!
You got so many nice guitars is crazy, and it really shows you take good care of them!
I am from Costa Rica and theres really no top tier guitars here. And if they were here would be so expensiiive.
Send over your collection over so we got something to see here!
Jaja pura vida mae!
So I'd happily take both thanks. ;)
(I will conveniently ignore the use of Gibson, National, Moserite and the odd Tele for convenience sake).
Refreshing and very entertaining. One of my favourite DBG vids so far.
I would prefer the Gretsch only because I can't warm up to solid body guitars. I own a Godin 5th Ave Kingpin II (P90s) and love it! I would still pick it over the Gretsch as well. Love your videos and keep it up!!! Great stuff! Thank you!
I have a Jazzmaster and it’s fine. Different and that’s what I was looking for. Very happy with it
Already have a JM. Thinking about getting a Gretch.
I've got the 5120 and replaced the Bigsby (Lic) with the same tailpiece as on your 6120. Always wanted a Jazzmaster. Enjoyed your comparison.
Gretsch has beautiful looking guitars, but I've never played one that I've enjoyed. I always feel like I'm fighting it
The last 20 seconds felt like a Marvel end credits scene
Jazzmaster + Gretsch Duo Jet
The sound of Superunknown (Soundgarden). Chris recorded every guitar with those. Jazzmaster for the beyond weird tunnings.
Each bring different things to the table..I like them both.
Nice video!
Thanks a lot for sharing.
Pick-wise: both are calling: "take me".
I have a contemporary jazzmaster and a g5129. They’re both great guitars. The jazzmaster has emgs and they are killer!
I have both guitars for largely the same reasons. 🎸🤘🏻😜
I like my Gretsch but my Jazzmaster is much more flexible and comfortable with whatever style is thrown at it. Very different from Strats and Teles I love the clean tones that pour out of it. Took me a long time to fall in love with the offset design but it is so comfortable whether sitting or standing.
That gretsch would be gorgeous in white with black with black binding or purple with silver binding
That Jazzmaster really lights my fire. What a great Fender geetar!
Some versions of JM don't have that problem. The Player series has a better bridge.
