Can not be 100 percent sure because the radio's not in front of me but if I were a betting man I would say your CMX138 audio signal processing IC is bad. Common problem in TYT radios and rebranded ones. The TYT and Retevis 9000D radios also suffer from the same problem. They supply to high of a voltage to the IC and it burns out over time. Replace the IC and cut the trace to the voltage supply trace. Place a silicon diode in series bridging the now cut trace. The voltage drop across the diode will lower the voltage to the IC and prevent it from happening again.
Edited to add: I forgot to mention. There are two of the CMX138 IC's in the 9800, one for the left side and one for the right side. So audio can disappear from either the left or right. Eventually in all these radios you will loose both sides unless you lower the supply voltage to the IC's.

    Great radio!
I still have an FT-8800R in my car, though I have a FTM-300D waiting in the wings to take over primary VHF/UHF mobile ops (once I have time to figure it out). I will probably put the 8800R in the shack and enjoy a nice "semi retirement". It's been an absolute tank of a radio for me for well over a decade. Congrats on the great find!

Great find! I got back in the hobby a couple years ago. I got a new FTM 6000. I've always liked and trusted Yaesu going back to the FT 101 B I started with in the 1980's on CW. I got the 6000 due to the mount. I got a spare mount bracket and can switch the radio between shack and truck in a couple minutes. (walking time....) Enjoy!

The 6000 is great for Winlink with the digi port in the back.

I have the cousin to all of these in my opinion. The Anytone AT-5888UV III. They are all very similar to each other. It's a great radio.

Sweet find. I have the quad band version I got from an estate sale. It's great. The mic cord is a weak point which is probably why the PO repaired it. I added a fat piece of heat shrink to mine to extend the life.
10m FM is fun, and we have some 6m FM activity around here. But mostly it's for 2m.
Oh yeah, the fan is annoying AF.

  • @eddiecollins459

Put Heat shrink over the tab on the RJ-45 so it will not snag anything and break off.. I put Heat Shrink on the RJ-45 connector on the Xeigu G90 microphone cable..

Hi Mike. I have two FT 8800R, one in my Mazda CX5 with the separation kit and a spare in the shack monitoring my two very local repeaters (VHF/UHF) whilst using other bands. Both are excellent and trouble free for over 8 years despite being a bit ‘long in the tooth.’ You have picked up a good radio. I watch all of your videos, thank you for them. Regards, Phil, Suffolk U.K.

Mike that mic looks like one of the replacement mics (which work better and are brighter) that you can get from the Jungle site. That could explain the strain relief missing. Nice Score!

I bought an FT-2900 probably 15 years ago used from a friend. Only think I have done to it was replace the mic cord, and it did once quit TXing. Sent it to Yeasu and they fixed it real quick and cheap. I have an FTM-2750D in the shack that I use for 2m/70cm/digital. It's been great too. Also a few HT from Yeasu. Smokin deal you got there!

Had one of those TYT 9800's a while back.
Got it all setup the way I wanted it, but certain settings would keep going back to default at power on.
Set the radio to scan and it would emit this LOUD beep when it stopped on an active channel.
No matter how many times I set it to OFF in the menu, it would come right back at next power on.
And auto repeater shift. Trying to talk on simplex with the radio defaulting to split operation.
    Complete counterfeit trash.
Went back to the Yaesu FT-8900 and have never had a problem since (own 2, one in shack, one in car).
You scored a real bargain Mike!

Are they full duplex for working satellites?

    • @arnoldgrubbs2005
      @arnoldgrubbs2005 8 годин тому

They will work full duplex, and also can with a menu setting be ran as a cross band repeater. Handy for when you are a long way from a repeater, and have to be some distance away from your car for what ever reason but still would like to have HT communications thru the distant repeater. Or just to set up your own "better than line of sight" communications system for your ham friends when out hunting/fishing or other remote activities.

I feel so lucky after watching this video. Last year, after I got my Technician license, I found a Craigslist post selling Yaesu FT60R for $200. I met up with the guy, decided to buy the HT, then he asked if I knew anyone who wanted an FT8800. I told him, no, and I only had funds for the HT, then he kindly decided to give me the FT8800, a power supply, a home-made dipole, and a bunch of accessories, including programming cable for both radios, so that I can get started in the world of amateur radio. I forget his name, but every time I use these radios, I am grateful for his kindness. I have other HTs, but the Yaesu is my favorite. The same with FT8800. Easy to program, straight forward, and a workhorse. It's funny you mentioned the fan... I always wondered if something was wrong with my radio, because even after a short Tx, the fan gets going fast 🙂
