Have you ever seen log splitters stored inside at home depot, tractor supply, etc? I picked this thing up and it had water in it. So much so it had partially seized when I went to start it the first time. Yes I keep it covered only because a crappy design FORCES me to.
Runnings has there's inside on the sales floor.Sales clerk will wheel it out back put fuel in it meet you out back after purchase it,fire it up run hydraulic ram out and back and your on your way.

They know almost nothing about the equipment they sell, but they do know - it has to be seen to be sold so they put the outdoor stuff - outdoors.
yea I dont have mine out in the rain. The hydralic tank will also get water in it. I have always had trouble with equipment that sits outside. Weather and sun are hard on them. Mine always starts and runs great. Have never had a problem with it.
Bought the same splitter in 2017, I bought a carry over 2016 model though because the specs were better. Sat outside every day since then seven years ago. I cover it with garbage bags but they eventually blow off and the engine is uncovered half the time. It only didn't start one time because I was using ten percent ethanol, just took a simple carb cleaning.I love my Kohler engines.
It is sad this is a design flaw but thanks for letting people know about it. I have the same splitter and it’s a great machine. The final assemble and oils added was by tractor supply for mine. My biggest advice for people is INSPECT what you are buying. Don’t assume someone assembled it 100%. Check the fluid levels and check the bolts and make sure things are tight. Make sure no one has taken any of the parts off and nothing is broken. If you don’t want to check all the bolts at least take a marker or a paint pen and mark the nut/bolt lineup so if there is movement you will see it. This is not a machine you want something coming loose on you during operation. YES mine had loose bolts on it and I’m glad I check things. If you have one check your nuts and bolts and cover your motor with something. Even a wide piece of gorilla tape over the air cleaner will keep the water out. When’s the last time you checked the air filter anyways? Lol have a great day 👍🏻
When you walk up to any store to buy a log splitter where are they staged? I basically bought this thing full of water from the store. Are you really trying to fault me for this? It is a crappy design. They know these things sit outside for sometimes months at a time before they are bought. It is covered now, but only because I HAVE TO.
rebuilding a champion 25ton splitter - inherited from my brother, was tarped at his place but gas tank, intake, carb and cylinder all had rust- almost same engine with different air filter design - i've got it running but oil seems to be taking on water too - on second oil change since i started. These things are just not meant to be out in the elements.
My dad was like you. He left lawnmowers sitting out on the porch with rain blowing in on them handled tools leaning against the side of the house or a tree. Then he'd get mad when a handle broke or pull cord snapped. I understand their design isnt the best,but if you're gonna leave it out in the weather your fittings are gonna rust,hoses deteriorating, paint fading,seals aren't gonna last. You cant leave this stuff out in the weather and expect it to last. I understand your complaint, and its valid,but you're not doing any better than what Kohler did. I have an old $200 harbor freight cement mixer that I've used twice,but it looks brand new and runs when I need it,because its stored in a shed. The shed and the concrete floor cost me less than what your log splitter did and it keeps a wood chipper,mower,cement mixer,string trimmer,chain saw,mower,leaf blower,pressure washer,bouncy house,lawn tools,and 2 bicycles dry. All together probably close to $5k in stuff thatll always start and most of it will look almost new. Dont get mad at me for saying that,its just a matter of priorities. If nothing else,tractor supply does sake fitted covers to fit this machine thatll last a few years until you can make better arrangements for your equipment.
My wife got me one for christmas. It has only been cranked 4 times it has ran like shit everytime. I havent even used quarter tank of gas. 1 of 4 times i got it to run with choke off after it ran for 20 minutes. Today it took 12 pulls or more to crank. Then wouldnt run without choke on then cut off and wont crank. It has been kept under a tarp no water in carb. I pulled spark plug and piston is black and real oily. My maul never let me down.
I just completely rebuilt my wood splitter and I'm going to use a plastic recycle bin box I'm going to flip it upside down and cover my motor that was always my intentions I had to buy a brand new motor when I rebuilt mine you can try that and it should work good tops will add up eventually but recycle bin it's a one-time deal and you can strap it down good luck
I have have equipment I own that sits outside too. Your local roofer can be best friend if ya buy a piece of rubber roofing U can at the least cover the engine or the whole machine. I actually use spring clamps to hold the stuff in place. It works for me all these years.
The hydraulic tank will get water in it to, due to the breather hole in the side of plug. Either cover it or keep it inside. Or you'll be changing a lot of fluids like I did.

I have the county ruff orchliens splitter basically same machine engine and all, been a fantastic splitter supplied me with two winters worth of wood now, it’s annoying but they gotta stay covered and dealerships shouldn’t be allowed to keep them outside, mine was inside the store when I bought it, guys around here that don’t have sheds usually keep tarps over their machines and buckets over small engines
Thanks for posting this. The merchant kept the splinters out side in the rain, and yes water got in the carb. Be sure to shut off the gas when transporting ,gas will work its way into the oil.This happened to me.
At least its not a Kohler Command Pro, those are absolute hot garbage. I feel your pain its a poor Honda gx knockoff. Honda has the same design, rubber grommets and all but it differs in that the the wing nut is encased in plastic and the mounting stud has a very durable anti rust finish. I fix these units all the time and the hondas withstand all kinds of adverse conditions while the Kohler never fails to fail.
1. The threaded shaft is a M6-1.0, have had no luck finding a knob with that thread pitch. 2. I keep it covered. 3. I've ordered a custom fitted cover for mine.
Then, there's rest of us, who've had the exact same splitter, and actually take care of it by storing it under a roof.... Yeah, 3 years, starts with first pull every time. Takes forever to move it 6 feet from open to under a roof....
Kohler engines are obviously trash. Got a Oregon 30 ton splitter great splitter but it took me over an hour to get the engine going. Next day….. put a drill with 3/4 socket to turn the motor over and nothing. Edit… yes it is brand new but not brand new because it had been sitting out front of Tractor Supply for ever how long it was sitting.
seen a couple question on the TS website under 2 splitters with "locked" engine after purchasing new :-( Going to buy one today on the last day of sale and will def look at this first when getting it. Thanks for the info.

Kohler basically copied the Subaru Boxer engine otherwise known as the XP series or the EXP series of Subaru engines. I have a few of em and love em except the Subaru's carb filter cover doesn't have a stud it clips over that plastic housing and water would still get down in the carb because it happened to me when one of them freak down pours came along more than once... Also even the newer Subaru engines have another critical flaw with the fuel tanks being metal. They invite moisture into the fuel and tanks rust bad. I ripped off the metal tanks and use craftsman style riding mower fuel tanks on em. Even made my own brackets and I use nylon ties to boot. The really good news is no more moisture in the fuel and if dirt gets in the tank which it has I can take the tank off dump it out whereas everyone hates to waste fuel but everyone hates a clogged up carb too.
Get a plastic tote. Turn it upside down and place it over your engine. Makes it water proof. You can actually take a eye bolt put it on the handle portions of the tote. Take a chain and snap hook it will hold when the wind blowing. Sometimes it's the operator. IF you get thick plastic floor mat etc. The whole thing covered. That tote you can get at a goodwill quit crying.

I buy cheap Chinese boat motor rain covers and cover the motor after it cools when using it. They cost $10 bucks and if I don't get my stuff put in the shed I don't have to worry about rain. Kawasaki engines do the same thing and I lost a walk behind mower motor because of the same reason. My Briggs intek also does it. I have to keep the engine running just to hose the damn grass off the mower. I miss the old oil bath breathers.

Cheaper fix to think about. Buy a different wing nut thats not sheet metal. Put a rubber oring under it & put a rubber sheath on the thread or dielectric grease. And or a trash bag over the engine
I keep a tarp on mine when not using it. I'm into my 6th year spitting several cords a season. Cranks first time every time and no rust on it or in it. I wouldn't be calling Kohler for something that you can easily problem solve yourself.

I know you are frustrated and angry but I don’t understand why you didn’t cover this immediately after you bought it. I have the same splitter and keep it in my garage because I know what happens when you leave ANYTHING outside. It gets wet. The sun beats on it. Critters will make a new home in it. This is almost common sense for anything left outside. I also bought from TSC and I had them start it and demo it when I bought it to make sure it was good to go. You could have put a 10 cent plastic shopping bag on the engine or even a 5 gallon bucket?
Just because the stores leave them out in the rain, doesn't mean you should. These are lawn mower engines. Who leaves their mower in the Rain? Even if the carb stud/wing nut issue didn't exist, there would still be corrosion forming in the electronics, and linkages etc. These machines could handle some rain when operating, but should always be covered when stored.
Covering it with absolutely anything would help, even if it’s just a garbage bag over the motor. Don’t dog out the splitter company for being an idiot.
Thank you for pointing out the issues - mine was spitting water out of the exhaust! It still won’t start - how do you suggest I get all of the water out - I assume I have more in the engine...
Drain the fuel bowl on the carb, there is a little screw on the bottom that will allow you to get it all out easily. Next pull the spark plug AFTER you drain the water from the carb. Crank the hell out of it with the plug removed. Most if not all the water will come out rather quickly. Spray starting fluid or fogging oil if you have it into the cylinder before putting the plug bag in and firing it up. You might also want to change the oil if you think the water was in the cylinder for awhile. Cheers and best of luck!
I don't think he is saying that the rust is the problem, it is only an indication. The real problem is water in the carb. I can't believe he is complaining about having to cover the machine.
I totally agree there are simple fixes for this. Hell even some grease on the threads more or less keeps the water out. When you buy something brand new though and the engine is almost seized because water gets into it just sitting outside at your local Tractor Supply that is NOT cool.
Buy a new wingnut and rubber washer...and, oh yes, place a thick garbage bag over the engine while storing outside. This is an entry level unit...I try not to be a victim.
I had one but it had a different engine!, they dont make things like they use too!. I cant believe they would over look something like that!. If it was rusted good it might have scratch the cylinder wall up!, they should replace the engine or the entire splitter!.

Somebody is stupid and its not kohler . Take care of your equipment. Use a coffee can a five gallon bucket, ride down the road and if you see small equipment sitting out they will be covered with a tub or something.
Kohler engineers are dick heads I agree. I have the 30 ton with a Kohler 9.5. If you run it full throttle like the manual says to do, it overheats after about 25 minutes, starts surging, and goes down. Run 2/3 throttle and it does fine. Also this damn thing desperately needs a hydraulic oil cooler. If a hose ever breaks you're toast, boiled bacon, fried meat, The exhaust port can get rained in also, so I keep a rubber tarp on it all the time [commercial rubber roofing material is wonderful as a tarp]. Mine is 3 years old. Valves always seemed clattery. Adjusted valve clearance and got no change. Give me a Briggs engine any time. A pressurized lube system, electric start, and better engine and hydraulic cooling is needed for sure.

Ya your right shitty design. The reason I’m watching this video is because my MTD splitter lost the hydraulic pump today. And the replacement pump was 529$ wow . Ran it for 12 years thinking the hole splitter is wore out . Looking to replace with new
What are you expecting that's a cheep splitter and engine if you want a better protected engine spend more money or just cover it up get a tote from Walmart and turn it upside down on it

Yes it’s a bad design ... but you have to accept some responsibility for not tarping the engine, if not the entire splitter.

Your car engine has a hood too....engines arent supposed to sit outside uncovered. Almost all small OPE has that kind of airfilter cover.

I bought a galvanized wash tub at Tractor supply to cover my engine. Fits over it perfectly. Keeps engine dry. Just a thought to help you out.

If you left gas in, don't be surprised. Ethanol is hell on carbs. It literally leaves a huge amount of buildup on it causing the problem perhaps

3.5 years of sitting out side and mine still starts 2nd pull every time. It’s never been covered.

I leave my splitter outside for 12 years now, I just cover the motor with two heavy duty plastic trash bags no problems. My cost is $2 per year

Bless your heart a tarp costs $4 but a dab of grease will do the same as a tarp in regards to water proofing that stud.
Tractor supply keeps.leaving these things outside in front of the store. I want to buy one but only if its still in the shipping shrink wrap.

I have the same splitter and keep it in my garage because I know what happens when you leave ANYTHING outside. It gets wet. The sun beats on it. Critters will make a new home in it. This is almost common sense for anything left outside. I also bought from TSC and I had them start it and demo it when I bought it to make sure it was good to go. You could have put a 10 cent plastic shopping bag on the engine or even a 5 gallon bucket?

Just because the stores leave them out in the rain, doesn't mean you should. These are lawn mower engines. Who leaves their mower in the Rain?
Even if the carb stud/wing nut issue didn't exist, there would still be corrosion forming in the electronics, and linkages etc.
These machines could handle some rain when operating, but should always be covered when stored.

Covering it with absolutely anything would help, even if it’s just a garbage bag over the motor. Don’t dog out the splitter company for being an idiot.
Thank you for pointing out the issues - mine was spitting water out of the exhaust! It still won’t start - how do you suggest I get all of the water out - I assume I have more in the engine...
Drain the fuel bowl on the carb, there is a little screw on the bottom that will allow you to get it all out easily. Next pull the spark plug AFTER you drain the water from the carb. Crank the hell out of it with the plug removed. Most if not all the water will come out rather quickly. Spray starting fluid or fogging oil if you have it into the cylinder before putting the plug bag in and firing it up. You might also want to change the oil if you think the water was in the cylinder for awhile. Cheers and best of luck!

I don't think he is saying that the rust is the problem, it is only an indication. The real problem is water in the carb. I can't believe he is complaining about having to cover the machine.
Don’t torque that wing nut on, it’ll cause it to “bowl” or place a washer under the plastic cover
I totally agree there are simple fixes for this. Hell even some grease on the threads more or less keeps the water out. When you buy something brand new though and the engine is almost seized because water gets into it just sitting outside at your local Tractor Supply that is NOT cool.
If you bought at harbor freight .....don't they sell decent tarps?
Buy a new wingnut and rubber washer...and, oh yes, place a thick garbage bag over the engine while storing outside. This is an entry level unit...I try not to be a victim.
get a 55 gal plastic drum cut off the bottom 1/3 cover your motor!
Or I dab 2 cents worth of grease on that stud to keep the water out......
I had one but it had a different engine!, they dont make things like they use too!. I cant believe they would over look something like that!. If it was rusted good it might have scratch the cylinder wall up!, they should replace the engine or the entire splitter!.
Same thing happened to me. rusty water coming out of the exhaust the day I brought it home from Tractor Supply. Piece of crap design.
Really i have 1 over 10 yrs never had a problem and the bolt never rust up because i have it cover up
You and the 100 other comments, I even say so in the video, I know a cover will fix it. Point is a piece of outdoor equipment should be able to withstand the elements. If you don't agree that is fine, we are entitled to our own opinions.
Somebody is stupid and its not kohler . Take care of your equipment. Use a coffee can a five gallon bucket, ride down the road and if you see small equipment sitting out they will be covered with a tub or something.

Kohler engineers are dick heads I agree. I have the 30 ton with a Kohler 9.5. If you run it full throttle like the manual says to do, it overheats after about 25 minutes, starts surging, and goes down. Run 2/3 throttle and it does fine. Also this damn thing desperately needs a hydraulic oil cooler. If a hose ever breaks you're toast, boiled bacon, fried meat, The exhaust port can get rained in also, so I keep a rubber tarp on it all the time [commercial rubber roofing material is wonderful as a tarp]. Mine is 3 years old. Valves always seemed clattery. Adjusted valve clearance and got no change. Give me a Briggs engine any time. A pressurized lube system, electric start, and better engine and hydraulic cooling is needed for sure.
I have a updated 34 ton champion the air filter cap doesn't have a whole it has a clip on the side side not have that problem

Same wing nut set up on every old car that had an air filter over right over the carb... but it was never an issue cuz cars have hoods... I wonder if covering your new piece of equipment would work? You know like taking proper care of it?

Ya your right shitty design. The reason I’m watching this video is because my MTD splitter lost the hydraulic pump today. And the replacement pump was 529$ wow . Ran it for 12 years thinking the hole splitter is wore out . Looking to replace with new

buy a washered wing nut that will help and chuck that cheap stamped wing nut

Any gas motor will not fair well out in the weather/ u shouldn’t have bought it if you don’t know how to take care of it
