- I’ve been a DJ for a number of years, and I’ve seen a lot of DJ’s come and go. In the beginning they thought they knew everything, but towards the end of their career, they learned a few lessons too late.
In this video, I share those lessons to help you avoid their mistakes :)

So the first lessons DJ’s learn too late is that they think that skills are everything. That if they become the most skilled DJ, they’ll get fame, fortune, and gigs!
But the thing is, that rarely happens.
Learning a specific transition, or scratch or complicated DJ trick or technique will not land you a gig in Tomorrowland. Believe me, I tried.
What will though is the content you produce, be it videos, mixes or even better yet original songs.
Those things yield a better result than knowing the latest and greatest DJ trick.
What will really set you apart is how you balance those skills with song selection, and following that up by making content like a video, mix or song, that markets your skills as a dj, or producer or even both.

Gear isn’t everything.
It’s easy to think that buying DJ gear, or courses, or even books about DJ’ing will make you a better DJ. But the truth is they won’t unless you put the work in.
If you’re a DJ enthusiasts that thinks that you must have this controller or this equipment to be a DJ, then you’re probably giving yourself an excuse to not start DJ’ing in the first place, because a person who really wants to be a DJ will always make a way to be a DJ. Be it with their phone, tablet or even laptop.
Saying that you need to buy this or have that, is just an excuse for most people to not get started in whatever they want to do. Because it’s so much easier to blame ones lack of money, than ones work ethic, to get started.
At the end of the day, it’s not what you have that defines your career, or christens you as a DJ or producer. It’s what you do with what you have that does.

Doing free gigs for exposure is not as bad as you think if you’re doing them for the right reasons like for experience.
So What I’m trying to say is that if you’re it for the money. You will not go far. But if you’re doing it for the right reasons like for experience, the love of music & making people happy then you will.
So if you get offered a gig for exposure and if you’re completely new, and if you kinda need that exposure and experience to jump start your career. Think twice about it before you say no.
Yes doing too much free gigs is indeed bad, but being prideful and saying to an opportunity that can help you in the long run, is even worse.

DJ GREG my father was a Dj growing up & id always prep his list and watched him since I was but I’d say I’ve been practicing for about 9 months & took my first leap in 2019.
UnkNowNymOuS Null to produce? Cause right now I’m just on serato & record my sessions when I do my mixes.
All 3 points are so valid! I started DJing 4 years ago (38 right now) and the only reason why I got into this was because a club owner liked my music taste when he was at my workplace. He asked me if I'd like to try DJing in his club and 2 weeks later I was doing it. Of course it wasn't that good.
But while my skills were still crap, I still managed to get other gigs just by asking other DJs when I went out. This gave me try outs and I made connections and started to DJ almost for nothing just to get exposure. Now I have 2 to 4 gigs every month next to my full time job (which was was target to begin with).

All of these tips are absolutely true.
No one cares about how amazing you are behind the decks. They don't know what you're doing. Just have a great song selection and learn to read the crowd.
Gear? Practice on what ever you can. Get lessons. Buy a cheap controller
I got the DDJ-400 and that's all I need at home because every club has gear.
I did 2 free gigs in a club and I smashed it both times. The club was rocking and the management were so happy, that I'm now booked to play there twice a week for pretty good coin.
All of these are just facts.

The bit about money being the wrong motivation for being a dj is sooooo true. Love the music , have a desire to showcase it to others and enjoy what you do , if others see that and enjoy what you do you will end up successful.. maybe not financially but if you can bring a smile to faces, your work is done :) money can come later. Being a dj is not something the average person can start their career with and make it their first job and live off financially , it starts as an interest and grows into a passion that if you excel you will end up being recognised for. "S3rl - everybody wants to be a dj" track has an interesting opinion ;)
2nd lesson hit me hard, I never thought in my mind that it’s easy to blame ones lack of money, than ones work ethic. I am going to try my best to work with what I already have now instead of blaming about it! :)
Oh and I agree alot with #2 DJ gear doesn't make you a better DJ, it only allows you to do more technical things within a mix. A good DJ to me is knowing the structure of music and mixing songs with smooth transitions and of course knowing how to read a crowd. I started DJing with DDJ Sr and recently upgraded to the DDJ 1000 and the music structure is still the same lol. My transitions are just a little more complex. #3 gigs for exposure
you only become good at live mixing if you have a crowd to work off of. if you get a chance to play to a crowd and don't have many of those experiences - TAKE IT!
I agree with that, but I would add that once you're a working DJ, don't work for free. I played for free starting out and it have me the experience, confidence, and contacts to start getting paid gigs. That was all fine when I worked a full-time day job. Now that I rely on DJing for at least half of my income, I don't play for free. If someone asks, I politely tell them that I'm not at a point in my career where I can afford to work for free.
I was binding keys, making macros on virtual dj to be able to smoothly tern 2 knobs at the same time. It worked for the simplest transition. No controller. But also no gigs. Because still thought that was not enough. Now.. I have controller and my first gig coming up!!! Woooop !

This really changes ones perspective on djing.Especially that skills don't matter as much as content is so true and the latest equipments don't give you skills. Skills are obtained through practice.. Thanks man
definitely a great top 3 misconceptions of djing. IF I could add a 4th item... Go to the booking location early or days in advance to understand the setup in advance, or expect HUGE fails!

So so true!!!!!!! I've been Djing since 1980, started out with 2 belt drive fischer belt drive tables & gemini mixer with Peavy amp & speakers. Finally got some 1200's about 1988. But nothing takes the place of playing the right songs at the right time & captivating a room!!!!!! Knowing what songs or sounds work with any particular crowd is as valuable as "GOLD". i gained recognition Djing yrs later using 2 5-disc carasells & a numark mixer (of course w/Peavy amp & speakers lol) & would have the club dancing & begging for more just on playing the right song & the right time (NO EFFECTS, SCRATCHING OR COMPUTER ASSISTANCE!!!!! Technical skill is awesome, but it is only part of being a "GOOD DJ" Musical knowledge & a perception of what the crowd wants is way more IMPORTANT! lOVE YOUR BLOGS, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! p.s. after 30 + yrs of Djing I learned musical content outweighs technical skill hands down.
One of the most important lessons for me is "Use what you have". By simply doing that I feel that it portrays someone who truly loves music and DJing. Thanks Professor for the great lessons here and all the other videos.
I started djing back in 1987. They only thing as far as equipment we had back then was the good ol’ technics 1200’s. So i did a bunch of free gigs to get my name out there, worked for a few years and then i stoped cuz i got married and had kids. Fast forward to 2010 technology is at its best as far as dj equipment. I made a come back. I bought my self a vestax vci 300mkii and started to dj again. Doing events for my old clients kids (weddings and Quinceañera) now i own a Pioneer DDJSZ2, 2 Technics 1200’s and a Pioneer S9 mixer. So starting out small is no shame.

#1 is definitely true. There Dj’s I know with very little talent but the sync button but they promote themselves a lot which gives them exposure. #2 hit the point on the head “Do with what you have”. #3 got me paying gigs by doing charity.
Djing with the equipment I have now and learning to use it to the best of its potential. It’s hard starting at square one and mastering the beginning steps

I've been DJ'ing with only a laptop and I've done 5-6 gigs until now, this basically tells us people don't care about your equipments but they iust want good content and atmosphere
While you do have a point here, getting a controller with your laptop will make your gigs a whole lot easier. But what you said is still very true!
You've been very inspirational and helpful with my DJ Career. I started by binge watching your videos in fall 2018, then buying a DDJ-400 controller, then getting a gig at a lounge using CDJ-NXS2 system. It took a lot of work I am learning new things every day and your content is consistent and appreciated! I can tell how much work you put into what you do. Lesson 3. I’ve gotta say I’ve never had a gig in front of many people, I’ve just played for small parties for my friends. I’m a little too nervous to get out there but it’s what needs to be done. I want to grow my skills and become more comfortable playing in front of folks I don’t know.

Lesson 2 definitely hit me the hardest and it wasn't until i saw other djs. Getting gigs with the same entry level gear i had that i really understood that.

Uff. The second one hit me the hardest. It is basically me! I bought a DDJ 400 lately, but I have no clue on how to start or how to learn. So I came over here a few weeks before to learn it, and I am kinda getting somewhere.
First off let me say, I love your videos. As a working DJ I can say that every tip in this video is 100% accurate. Especially the newest gear part. Pioneer, Denon, etc. make DJ gear not DJ's. It doesn't matter what you use, it's how you use it. Your videos using entry level/beginner gear prove that.
the lesson that hit me the hardest was lesson 2, i always wanted to buy a bigger gear because i wanted to be more creative and be better in djing. I own a ddj sb controller and ive been using it for almost 5 years already and i realized that you dont really need those expensive gears to get better at djing because what you will need is hardwork and the passion and love for djing. This channel also helped me learn this lesson because of your tutorials i learned a lot of things that i could not do before like scratching because i always thought that i needed turntables to learn to scratch but this channel showed me that everything can be learned with whatever gear you use if only you work hard and keep on practicing. Thanks for the tutorials idol you are awesome.

2nd hit me hard! I really approve with that one! My story was that I really have this feeling that when you don't have the gear, it's very hard and challenging to get into and learn djing. But since I can't afford a beginner controller like DDJ-RB, and I really wanted to learn djing so bad, I downloaded an app on my phone. From there, I practiced the basics like beatmatching and other basic transitions, creating little mixes etc. Until recently I was able to have my first controller, DDJ-RB, and little did I know, I already had the fundamentals and basics that I need already! It just became better because you can physically control it! I realized it's not about the gear, it's always about you looking for ways to learn despite challenges! :)

I believe it's the first one for me since I'm still a bedroom Dj but there is one thing I would like to add if there was a fourth tip and that is meeting the right people and being social about who you are.
Also just posting my mixes on mixcloud is just a greatful feeling as well knowing that people listen to my mixes and I gain confidence as well.

The lesson that hits me the hardest is gigs for exposure aren't not bad, because im doing it for the reason of playing my desire genre and music to make the people go crazy and have a good feeling, having a extra money income and good exposure for people here in bacolod city. And it's hard for me to have a gig here because first i only play when my friend invites me to use his controller and lastly it's hard to find a person who will help me to pursue my dreams. But im proud to say that i made some remixes using my laptop since i start djing and virtual dj helps me a lot. That's all dj carlo and thank you so much for this another video ❤

I definitely get the exposure tip, I’m jus starting out and I took a gig in a “dj competition” to see who was the best, I didn’t win but I got my name out there and it was completely worth it
#3 is so true. I haven't been paid for the majority of my gigs, but I'm getting a hell of a lot of exposure in my area and having a lot of fun!

Lesson 2, I’ve currently got the numark dj controller and can’t afford ‘good’ equipment so this helps a lot
im stock in the middle of 'who's that dj😞' and 'oh he's the dj😍' i grab almost all the offers, i know for myself im just a beginer so its ok,but now that i know few stuffs to dj i dont demand a high rates, some djs look down on me saying 'im just getting the job cause im that cheap dj' well for me im doing this not bout the money,well some part of it(to buy dj stuff) but the rest was about enjoying what im doing. looking forward to learn more from you sir idol.

The lesson 2 is the best lesson for all the DJ's, we DJ because we love the music after the gear. Gear is everywhere, we can start DJing even example is on phone, if you love DJ you can play the music anywhere using your passion. :) Thank you for all the tutorials DJ CARLO! Love it.

My hardest DJ lesson was learning that just because two tracks have the same BPM doesn't always mean they can mix well; in other words I had to learn to mix in key at the same time with a lack of understanding music theory. Thanks for the video!
Hardest of the 3 was balancing whether or not to take gig for exposure... many times opportunities present themselves in different forms.
Definitely the second point hit me the hardest. Learning that booking gigs is a lot about image. Building that social media following.

2nd Lesson is what hit me hard. I have always thought that the controller I have is not sufficient. But, having been able to watch your videos for some time already, I learned to be satisfied with my current setup. I just really need to focus and work hard. Now, I am aiming to practice hard and hone my skills until I become confident enough to play live. 👍
The part where you were talking about being about the passion not the money is always something I try strive for. You can lose your sense of self chasing money

The lesson, that hit me the hardest, was that gear won't make you a better dj. You can't blame anyone for thinking like that, because this is the believe, which the industry is trying to sell us. Believing gear makes you a better dj is simply you just handing the responsibility for your own success to a company whose product you are buying. The truth is: you are the only one who can change it for yourself.
If you are in djing for wrong reasons like for money (name,fame,girls,drinks etc) you wont make far.......this lesson hit me harder

Defenitely the first one!!! As i learned on a pair of cdj 100s, i have always been sure to have good technics amd so on.....
But since i put a revolitionary order in my music library, bringing a logical "story" in my sets, i feel like my small gigs ar on totaly another level!!
What you say is so true: it's not how much technique skills you put in a set, but how good you make the crowd dance!!!
Even though I am currently 13 years old and started djing at 11, the lesson which hit me the hardest was learning how to do flares.

The Gigs for exposure really hit me badly, as a same start out with my friend, he went through a lot of free gigs just to get exposure and now he is a resident DJ as well as some guest DJ which is better known than me although my skills is better than his. After hitting hard by this, i'm just started to push myself through the social media network but it was definitely late. Damn!
