Toto Guitar Tech "Goz" tells us about Steve Lukather's recent Pedal Horror Story!

- Guitar players and Techs have all found themselves in similar situations to the one "Luke" and "Goz" were recently in. The clip of Jon "Goz" Gosnell fixing that board up in record time has been shared all over Guitar Pedal Forums, and now I am lucky enough to chat with Jon about...."WHAT HAPPENED?!?!"

This is an incredible breakdown of troubleshooting in real time during a live performance. Goz was a total pro and got the audio back before the solo section. It also shows what a high stress job being a tech can be.
Thanks for checking out the video, Steve! Goz is a pro and did a great job at getting the essential signal flow tracked and repaired. Tough situation, handled great by both tech and player. 🤘🏻
@@DoubleDguitar I saw that you have a cat.
@@DoubleDguitar You are a games' player
@@lucapietrangeli2027 definitely!
@@lucapietrangeli2027 yeah man, 2 cats and 1 dog.
I was at this gig. As a musician myself I have known for a long time that all behind the scenes crew on a tour are vital to keeping the engine running. However, that night everybody realized just how important they are. Live music isn't just x amount of guys standing on a stage with a magic sound coming out of magic boxes. It's coming out of people, and out of equipment that can go bad at any time, but thank god there are people , such as Jon, that work their butts off for us to be able to enjoy the music.
That moment when the crowd hears the guitar come back in and they starting clapping, not just for the guitar but because Jon got it working….still gives me chills and is exactly why live gigs are the most fun things in the worlds. Very cool that you were there for that and found this video. Thanks for watching! I bet that was a great gig to see.
@@DoubleDguitar it absolutely was it was the second show on this tour that I saw. I was at the Amsterdam gig as well, which was a problemless night, so I knew what Steve could do without technical difficulties. What really surprised me was how Steve never let the pedalboard mishap influence his playing. Every note was just perfect and I was floored during every track they played! I would not want to experience this kind of error myself. Not being able to play with your tone is one of the most difficult things ever, as you know
@@RKs_MusicLife yeah, your tone is your voice. He knew it was a fixable thing and knew Jon was on it. I hope I get to catch a show next year. Awesome that you got a couple in.
True hero! It took him around 12 seconds to do the troubleshooting and figure out where the problem is and he fixed it for around 2 minutes. Impressive!
Totally! He is a great guy and super hard worker. Thanks for tuning in!
BIG RESPECT TO THIS GUY....
i find the tech talk here fascinating. saw the original video when it was first posted, and was amazed at how fast Goz identified the problem, and got Luke's Rig up and running again.
I am glad you enjoyed the vid. I saw the original and was blown away by his reaction and thinking. Wanted to try to shine the light on the guys that really deserve it. Goz is a great guy. 🤘🏻
@@DoubleDguitar Say thanks and hello to Goz for your wonderful job with Luke
@@lucapietrangeli2027 I will, I plan on showing him all these great and really kind comments. Thank you!

Thanks for checking out the video. Goz has a million stories!
Was there 2 power supplies on the board ? Smaller boards = Less to go wrong. Glad to see #Goz getting credit for a stellar job and well done for making a podcast to help explain and give Goz his due credit 👍🏻 Just the physical difficulty of trying to lift the massive pedalboard while under that pressure with your balls dangling in the wind inbfront of 15,000 people, what a great job, well done Goz 👍🏻
There are two supplies under there, and yeah I agree. Holding that thing up while working on it was looking definitely not fun.

So much professionalism in this whole situation, Goz fixing it on the fly, Steve keeping the song going, The band picking up solos, licks and vocals then Luke extends the end solo to give the Audience what they came for! Then to call out the tech team for a round of applause for their hard work!
Total package 100%. Thanks for watching, have a great one!

Cara esse tecnico merece todo respeito do mundo uma area não muito valorizada pela industria, mas que sabe resolver os problemas de um show ao vivo,o steve lukather usa muitos pedais.
I wish non-musicians could truly appreciate the complexity of the situation, guitar pedalboard malfunction for one of the greatest ever!!! Every guitarist knows how tedious it is to build any pedalboard; let alone one this advanced, every cable length is set for power and signal, once you take once pedal out it usually messes up the entire function and also cable lengths, not knowing if there is a bad jack on one pedal. The fact he trouble shot this on spot, replaced a guitar, and power supple, went down his mental checklist in milliseconds, had him sounding even better for outro solo!!! Unreal, If I ever have the pleasure of meeting Luke, I’m asking where Goz his tech is, need to shake that man’s hand! I’d buy him a beer but I can tell he’s all business to be this elite of a tech 😎👏🎶🔥🔥🔥
He is a great dude and very worthy of that beer. Hope you get to cross paths. Thanks for watching 🤘🏻🙏🏻

@@DoubleDguitar After watching this video, I have decided to watch the long version of DoM's recording of the concert. Man, I can watch what Goz did over and over again. He was focused on one thing: SOLVE THE ISSUE! I think that Steve has to pay him more now, his market value as guitar tech, just went sky high thanks to Steve's foot and power supply 👍👍👍
I had the same problem at a big outdoor festival in Sweden a few years ago. The sun was right in front of the stage. I could not see if the diods lit up or not. It took me a little while to see the power was off on the pedalboard.
Ugh, sorry to hear! At least you know it can happen to even guys like Luke, and it’s never a fun moment.
Great video and wow, the embodiment of professionalism, Goz gettin it done on stage!!!!! The band keepin' it movin' as well. Hey man, just seeing this and thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Had a smiliar situation on a wedding gig, thats why I retired my pedalboard and went multiefects, theres just so many things that can go wrong with a pedalboard.
I'd love to know why Luke doesn't use a loop switcher like the ES-8 you mentioned
@Double D guitar - I worked many years in the past behind a mixer (in a live session a mine) and behind a multitrack (in a studio session) so I really know what is the tech job behind a musician. @@DoubleDguitar I’ve got your back. Be blessed and keep your spirits up.
Cool to find out that you’re a Maryland guy! I’m a transplanted guitarist from NJ, though I’m pretty much done with gigging. We’ll have to get out and see your band!
Hey Bill, thanks for checking out the video. Very cool, are you in the Baltimore area? I do enjoy gigging out, still. Definitely not as easy as it used to be.
Yep. Up in Harford County. I “retired” back in 2001, and didn’t play a note for two years. Shortly after moving down here I started to get reacquainted with my instrument. I did occasional fill-ins and a few reunions with my long-time cohorts, but decided to officially pull the plug a few years ago. Between the round trip drive to NJ, schlepping gear in and out, and fighting an uphill battle musically with guys who have lost a step, it would take me three days to recover. Enough was enough. I still work at my playing every day, but I’ve lost all interest in doing gigs. Not really sure why. These days, when most bands are ready hit the stage, I’m just about ready to hit the hay!
BTW, I followed your recommendation concerning the Friedman BE-OD pedal and ordered one. It’s getting rave reviews from a lot of great players. Pete Thorn loves it. I’m generally not one who uses any kind of gain devices in front of my amps, but there have been a few that have come out in recent years that are pretty transparent. My current favorite is the Chase Tone Secret Preamp. I also bought one of his Purple Stardust Hi-Octave pedals just to get that spooky Hendrix sound, but that’s more of a novelty. I looking forward to trying out the Friedman.
@@billknudson7895 I am sure you won’t be let down with the BE! I set the internal trim pots down to about 10 o’clock. It helps bring the gain to normalish levels. Hope we get to cross paths, at some point. And I totally can relate to hitting the hay by the time the first set normally starts 😆😆😊
It is a great pedal, for sure. Right now the only amp I’ve tried it with is a Line 6 Catalyst 60. I turned the internal pot way down, and that fit the tone I was looking for. The gain control seems to be a bit noisy, but I really need to spend more time with the pedal to get a better handle on its characteristics. I recently added a Big Muff Ram’s Head to my chain. Talk about going from high-tech to low-tech! I was using a guitar fitted with humbuckers. At first, I wasn’t getting what I wanted out of it. As I was going through my presets on the Catalyst, I hit one that had a pretty good amount of gain. I played a handful of notes, and bang, there it was! I got a sound that was very reminiscent of David Gilmour’s sound on “The Wall”-a really neat singing quality with a nice, subtle bite. It’s nice at my advanced age to find something new to inspire my playing.
@@billknudson7895 finding inspiration is tough, and when gear helps it get through, it usually has a unique thing to it.
That techs career just took a massive leap. A pro like that is going to be able to command any pay cheque. Good for him, respect.

Could you build a pedalboard with 2 power suplie and make a switch between them to switch using newer power suplie .
Todo respeito a esse Guitar tech que solucionou rapidamente o problema na pedaleira do Luke !!!
Congratulation "Goz" very very good job your the best 🤘🤘🤘
the thing that broke my heart watching it happen was that he had to prop it up while re-feeding all the power cables into the new supply. I know just how much it would have helped to have someone else prop it up a little bit but every other tech has a job to do too! agggghhhhh. nightmare fuel .
Right?! That was a tough thing, and then Luke is still stomping pedals while man’s workin 🤯
Did Steve switch to Cioks power supplies after this? I read he is a Cioks artist, I was curious if that info is outdated or if he switched after this incident.
He did, right after this. The owner of Cioks caught the video and reached out. Now they have a 7 and an 8 under Luke’s board.
Very good job man !!!!!
Thanks and I will make sure Goz hears all the great comments here. 🤘🏻
I wonder what followed after the show. Did he just replace the broken PS or revise the board with a different PS or change the wiring to enable a quicker save?
I know the one unit was dead and I have good reason to believe he is using while new line of products. 😉
the other amazing thing as he is plugging in the pedals, he did not fry any pedal - some may have been a different voltage than 9 volt.
So true, right?! He had a ton to think about, process and perform and did so perfectly. Thanks for watching🤘🏻
And that's why label makers were invented hahaha
For Steve, you enter into the kimball list, you are a great man, good job
Thanks for checking out the video! 🤘🏻🙏🏻
You always have to have a plan B, then the plan C. Great work.
Totally, esp with bands like this. Thanks for watching, appreciate it.
Every professional giging Guitarist asks himself , why there is no spare Pedalboard ? Luke has spare Guitars , Amps ( 3 Bogners ) but only ONE Pedalboard. If there is only ONE problem with a pedal or the power or the cables you have a massive problem for the whole Gig , if you don't have a Tec like Goz. So great respect for him. But if I was Luke , I would tour with TWO exact the same Pedalboards .
Goz answered your question @36:36 or so. He also mentioned weight limits for flight travel, what is likely to fail. Bottom line, he had the spare power supply and got it swapped out in 2 minutes. Total pro and discussed with Luke who he's worked with for a decade.
Nevertheless: respect to the tech-guy, for doing the job under these conditions.
Absolutely. 🤘🏻
Amazing

5 minutes in, still hasn't let Goz have a word in edgewise...
This is the biggest reason I always try to keep my rigs as simple as possible and you always have to have a plan B.
What Goz did that night ON STAGE is the musical equivalent of a Thoracic surgeon cracking open a chest and repairing a dissected Aorta
Quite the analogy!
