The favorable and desirable degrees usually are Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, or Criminology. The next acceptable are Chemistry, Biology, or psychology. I have a master degree in criminology and just shy of defending my thesis to complete my master degree in clinical psychology. I'm interested in being a criminologist. Where would you begin?
Depends on where you live and who you wanna work for. Go to any agency you like. Whether it be local, an area you like, the climate, etc. if you don’t wanna work for a police agency then I’m not much for help. My department only recently turned to civilian contracted CSI’s.

Not all CSIs are sworn. You just need to check around and ask. When I first started, 35 years ago, I was one of three civilian CSIs in my department. The others were sworn. As the sworn CSIs retired, they were replaced by non-sworn CSIs. Now, everyone in my unit is non-sworn, including supervisors.

Does the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department offer any programs for high school students interested in pursuing a career in CSI? Additionally, is it possible to speak with someone currently working in your CSI department to learn more about the role, or to arrange a job shadowing opportunity?

If you look at state crime labs jobs the requirement is generally a degree “in a physical science.” Criminal justice degrees are not accepted for these roles (at least at the state of NC level)
