  • Watch as I fix my vintage Kawasaki crotch rocket! Bought off of craigslist, this motorcycle has problems that need to be fixed before I get to ride it. In this video I find those problems and address them before taking it out on the road. It is a 1988 Kawasaki ZX1000.

I just bought the same bike 88 ZX1000B. Couldn't pass it up for 2k. Super clean but had been sitting for a while. This bike is scary in a crazy way. My last 2 bikes 05 Ninja 636 and 05 Hayabusa but this one is a hell of a ride ! Its total 80's with marginal brakes and lower gearing than the Busa. It feels like the front end is ready to snap up at any time in the first 2 gears. The newer bikes have better balance and brakes, lighter weight but this bike has a SOUL ! Not to mention I was a kid of the 80s and this is an icon !

Way too heavy to pop up in first gear. Thats part of the beauty of this bike. You can hammer on it and not have to worry about that.
I have a 1994 FZR 1000 EXUP and a ZX1000B1. The FZR is supposed to be faster, but I swear the ZX1000 has so much more power everywhere. Maybe the FZR excels up high, but this kawasaki is a BEAST, is ultra smooth, and sounds so good.

I really enjoyed watching your video. Im glad to see the ZX10 found a good home and
received the attention she needed. Im sure you know you have a very clean zx10 apart
from the left side plastics, the corbin seat is the cherry on top.

I like the RZ350 in your garage. I’ve got an 88 ZX10 but want the RZ as well.

Hey cousin! I was impressed with the video. Being a mechanical engineer, I was able to appreciate all you did.

Good for you to get the bike fired up! Replacing and cleaning the fuel system parts was probably a great idea. The engine sounds healthy and bike should work well for you'! 😀

LOVE IT. Nut and bolt it good. Lot of your leaks probably slow or stop. Plus make it safer. Then sync the carbs. Looks like a solid bike tho. Definitely a rare find these days.

Nice work ! I had hoped to see where all the vaccum lines went for the tank and air box so I could assemble my 90 zx10. Same leaks but in pieces when i got it. Hoping to find a diagram. Careful on that thing. Lol

Great video. I'm on my second ZX10B/ZX1000B. You have or had a great one on your hands. That red/black combo was only offered in 1988. That color combo, no rust in the tank and original exhaust.....oh boi lolol

I had one back in the day. A shiver and black one. Always found it easy to work on and pretty comfy too. My first really fast bike. I had a zzr11 after but while it was even faster the ZX10 was actually a better bike. Enjoy it

Wow that ZX-10 is in great shape, original exhausts are a bonus, most 80s bikes exhausts rotted in front of your eyes if you lived where they salted the roads or next to the ocean. This model was everything the model before it SHOULD have been, the 86/87 GPz1000RX was dismal compared to the competition. But these were pretty good, I watched one almost win the prestigious 88 Castrol 6 hour, production bike endurance race in NZ against much more track focused bikes, but a botched rear wheel change lost them the race.

First try at starting, did not turn on the choke, cranks for ten seconds, nope it doesn't start.
I have a 1985 Ninja900 for sale right now. Just needs the petcock changed.

I enjoyed this, but you started and ran it knowing there was very little oil inside the engine, smart!! NOT

Your lethargic troubleshooting technique to make your video longer is mind numbing.
Your analysis of the kickstand switch though remedially right in concept is fragmented and in accurate. Me owning a ‘90 since new can not bear to watch this past the 12 min mark.

The best way to check the oil level is after a run. Let the oil settle for five minutes with the bike on the centre stand. As you say if it is half way beween the upper/lower mark or near the max then everything is good. Dont be worried that after leaving the bike for 24 hours or more that the oil level drops (assuming you have no leaks). These engines do that, I guess it is a capilllary action and the oil just gets sucked into another area of the engine away from the sight glass. thats why you just take a check five minutes after the engine is switched off and go with that.
Strongly recommend you take the clutch casing off and inspect the clutch basket for signs of mechanical damage. The only weak point of the engine is the alternator chain tensioner, which can come into contact with the clutch basket. In the worst scenario the basket gets destroyed with major mechanical destruction.
    I fitted Kwick's tensionar tamer www.kwick.biz/product/tensioner-tamer-alternator-starter-chain-tensioner-fix/
Looking forward to the next instalment.
