  • You guys have asked me for years to find some surfboards that are cheap and yet highly functional. Well, I was approached by Magic Carpet to test out their Dark Water Dagger model, a super playful twin fin shape that I was delighted to ride.

Always objective and no brand snob, thanks Kale.
I'm sure this is tailored to be intentional but there are boards in Aus that are still around that price. Dahlberg at Sideways comes to mind. Maybe more cheap board reviews too come? Cut through the hype!

Thanks for this, I saw this at my local JS surf shop O-side, CA and it was on sale for really cheap price and was considering it and wanted to wait for someone to review it before pulling the trigger.

Would Love to see a review on the Troq boards as thez are also prettz cheap compared to other boards. Espacially the Twin Fish since I can`t find any reviews to the board. Anyways keep up the great videos!

it would be interesting to see how the glass job (4 x 4 x 4) holds up. A lot of these super cheap mass-produced boards have terrible glassing and ding very easily

Yeah. They’re stringerless epoxy, but they’re made in the Aus Madluc factory that is great and glasses JS poly boards in Aus. In principle if the foam is reasonable it should be sound. Though you will snap it.

I think this "glass issue" with cheaper boards is more based on rumour than reality. About ten years ago I used to buy heaps of them and the glass held up amazingly.
The rumour comes from the tensions between shapers and factory boards back in the day. I used to be a handshape snob, now I think nothing about buying a factory board.

I owned a Magic Carpet Houdini (mid length) for a couple of months. It was a nice shape but it continually cracked along the rails with regular use, which was really disappointing. My Haydens or JS boards never had the same consistent issue.

It looks like a great board with plenty of volume up front for a shorty. It looked ready to take whatever you were dishing out. I liked the skatey performance you gave with the keels.
The only downside I see is the price. That isn't on the cheap side. As others have mentioned, there's loads of boards available for cheaper. Probably why foamies are so common lately.
Oh and the fish/swallowtail. Seems those are keeping ding repair guys working. Unless you always have a pad next to your vehicle, your gonna wreck those little tips.

I worked in the surfboard industry for over 15 years, in that time the cost of materials went up considerably but the price of boards have stayed the same.. we should be encouraging people to pay a premium for their boards this in turn will bring the quality of the materials and craftsmanship up a notch and won’t drive shapers to look for cheap labor… plus people will buy less boards but will really learn to look after their craft because it cost more..
Buying cheap boards does nothing for the industry, it only makes it worse and creates an industry that only benefits the top dogs and not the actual tradesmen building the boards who are getting paid f$&k all…

Don´t understand why a twinfin makes a board have more glide? Makes no sense.
