This looks like a great hike!! What is the bear bell? Does it scare away bears?

It's supposed to alert them that someone is near. I doubt it scares them. I just want momma bear and cub to know I'm about to turn the corner. Sneaking up on black bears is where it can get rather dangerous. Aside from that, most of the time, black bears are fairly harmless. We encountered 16 of them while we were there (our total stay at the park) and none of the encounters were negative.

We'll be needing bear bells and stick clacking in Illinois before we know it.
The Tennessee trails are definitely exercise. Higher elevations, mountainous ascents and descents, and lots of rocks & tree roots. The 8 miles i did in the Smokies was the worst calf burner ive ever hiked.

It was fun even if we didn't make it to the end of the trail. When we go back there, and we will, we'll finish that trail!
