4K POMBAL - FESTAS DO BODO | PORTUGAL WALKING TOUR 2022

The traditional and centenary Festas do Bodo originates from a legend related to a plague that hit the Pombalenses and a mythical D. Maria Fogaça, a very devout person who gave rise to the centuries-old festival. Tradition tells us that a plague of locusts afflicted the people of Pombal, boldly invading their dwellings, contaminating food, and even falling into shoals inside the vases that the women took to the water, forcing the use of a cloth to strain it. .
This vexation was so unbearable that it forced the people to go to Igreja S. Pedro, then the Matriz da Vila, and there they began a procession of prayers, which ended up in the Chapel of Our Lady of Jerusalem.
A sung mass was held, promising a feast if it would deliver them from such a great calamity. The Lady of Jerusalem quickly answered the prayers and supplications of the afflicted people, because the following morning the terrible enemy had already evacuated the fields and the fields. Once the miracle was recognized, a new solemn mass was given in thanksgiving for the benefits received, and parties were immediately set for the coming year.
The following year, D. Maria Fogaça decided to take care of the total expenditure of the religious festival, such was the effort that there were reeds, skirmishes, bulls, fireworks and dances. At this feast, two large cakes were offered to the parish priest, which, coming out of extraordinary grandeur, when placed in the oven, one was badly placed. A servant of the house, invoking the name of Mrs. of Jerusalem, dared to quickly enter the oven, repaired it and emerged unharmed. This fact immediately occurred to all the people, as a new miracle, and gave rise to the feast of Bodo. From then on, the party began with a reckless devotion to the cake, which the population gave the name "Fogaça".
The festivities that initially took place at the end of June, began to be held on the last weekend of July, as it was more in line with the harvest calendar.
