I actually enjoyed both Penguin and Agatha, two shows I'm really glad we got. One show paying homage to Mare of Easttown and European detective dramas, embracing a more open approach to nudity, violence, and other mature themes. The show’s also pretty open about its LGBTQ themes, which might not be to everyone’s taste. But honestly, the connection between queer culture and witchcraft has been around for decades so it fits. Then there's Penguin, a truly unique crime drama that's naturally drawing comparisons to The Sopranos. I loved the grounded, yet visually captivating take on Gotham City. It feels like a blend of Gothic European (Liverpool, Edinburgh, Glasgow) with New York City, while still carving out its own identity, much like The Batman did. Gotham in this series though leans more towards New Jersey and Brooklyn, which works perfectly for exploring before the Central Gotham. Colin Farrell is fantastic as the Penguin, and I thought the show's beginning was handled really well. Glad we got both shows myself.
Regarding Farrell’s casting, supposedly Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill both turned the role down because they wanted more money than Robert Pattinson. Farrell got the role partly because he was available, but largely because he’s not a prima donna.
@@thesnoopmeistersnoops5167That is very much true. British and Irish actors just turn up and get to work without throwing temper tantrums ala Rogen and Hill demanding more money than Pattinson.

People who complain over minor changes like this are absolutely nitpicking.

To answer the opening question: it's the Rule Of Andor. Any time you have a spinoff or adaptation that seriously feels like it has zero hype or even reason to exist, there has to be a creative involved who is inspired to bother in the first place. Andor was the most "why?" thing I'd ever heard of, until I saw it and realized that centering on the title character was really just an excuse to sandbox the time of the early rebellion in Star Wars. THEN it all made sense. Odds are that, at some point in the production process of The Batman, someone decided that there was something to this Penguin characterization that would lend itself to a worthwhile dive into criminal elements.
By far, the best 3D prosthetic make-up I've EVER seen, and performed by talent like Colin Farrell AND Clancy Brown? Holy sh!t, this show is going to win awards! Thanks for the upload @TheCriticalDrinker !
Nah, not yet. Tony is one of the most unique and complex characters ever written. He is still the peak of what a morally grey protagonist (villain hero) can possibly be. Walter white comes very very close, but he’s still less nuanced and complex than Tony.
@sullivandmitry1416 Oh for sure, I'm not giving the Penguin that much credit. I'm just watching the Sopranos for the first time right now so it was bizarre seeing discount Tony in a fat suit in Gotham Also, I admittedly have 2 seasons left of Sopranos, but I would probably put Jimmy McGill above both Tony and Walt. Better Call Saul does an exceptional job threading the needle from start to finish. There's never a point where Jimmy feels objectively evil and irredeemable as Walt and Tony often do. That's not to say Walt and Tony aren't complex, I just don't find them as compelling since their motivations are pretty straightforward and they lack serious reflection of their own moral failings. Tony spends a lot of time in therapy, but it's really not complicated: he's a murdered and a cheat and he doesn't care because he wasn't raised to value women and human dignity.
I don't know. I see white man taking black child under his wing + white man naked in a chair being tortured by woman. That's two ticks for the wokebox.

The show had a really solid first episode. Colin Farrell is really good here. But the performance I might have enjoyed the most was Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone. I really hope the next couple of episodes continue to deliver like the Pilot did. It’s beautifully shot and there’s also some good subtle character moments too. That moment where Penguin expresses his desire for love, gets laughed at and kills Alberto was the character to a T. It’s what I love about this villain.
I love how everyone in this show has the most cliched version of a New York accent(and btw The Penguim talks like an italian mobster but he is called Oswald Cobb), while it takes place on a ficctional city that looks like a mix of Detroit, Chicago, and San Francisco 🤣
gothams first season made the penguin interesting for me until they went nuts and inserted every batman villain they could get their hands on, the penguin seemed so much more grounded.
I was blown away by the writing in this first episode. Plenty of "DC dark" but also some well written wit that made me chuckle and didn't take itself too seriously.
If Collin Ferrel is in anything, I'm sold. Banshees of Inesherin showed me how much depth he has. Plus, the interview he did about his son showed me how much of a genuinely good person he is.
I could see Tony Soprano and a hint of Silvio in Farrell's performance. My wife loves it which is peculiar cause she didn't care for The Batman. For myself with the way he walks keeps reminding me of the Burgess Meredith edition. Glad to see the Penguin done right. I loved when he shot Alberto Falcone btw. That caught my attention.
Is never been a DC fan but when I watched The Batman I gave it 10/10 because I couldnt find anything what I could dislike. Every single piece was such joy. The craft behind the movie is on a high level and Im happy to see the quality continuity in the penguin
I have to admit, your 100% right! But honestly, I think the Penguin from the Gotham TV show would have been a little better. I actually liked that show.
Glad to hear Daredevil mentioned as a comparison for how dark the Penguin is. I was wondering about that as I watched the review. Daredevil is a cut off point for me. I liked the first season of Daredevil a lot, but I only watched one show a day. So many people loved how dark it was that I was afraid they were going to double down for the second season. As it was, I thought the second season of Daredevil was a bit too cartoonish for my taste.
To be honest as soon as I saw it was connected to The Batman with this version of Penguin I was sold. The Batman was really good and Colin Farrell was great as Penguin so it’s nice to see the good writing and good acting carried over.
What i truly enjoyed about this episode was that it made me underestimate Oz. "Oh he's captured, I bet he's gonna be Sofia's pet for the rest of the show" then the kid pulls through and Oz successfully turns the attention away from him and starts a crime war. His laugh while Alberto's body is discovered is so awesome
Just goes to show how great an actor Colin really is. He made the penguin feel real and relatable. All in all... Great work to the entire team on that pilot... Looking forward to the rest of it.
The Penguin and Peacemaker is enough to tell me that DC can make incredible comic book TV shows. While She-Hulk and Secret Invasion show me that Marvel can't.
I have had the Penguin philosophy of making my boss look good for more than 4 decades. It is a large contributor to my success in rising to the top of my field.
I also did not have high hopes for this one...then saw the opening scene. They did an amazing job creating the look and feel of Gotham and the bringing the Penguin character to life....all within the first 15 minutes. Then used the middle to setup key characters and relationships and closed it out with a pretty surprising yet plausible ending that will get most viewers to come back for more. I am cautiously optimistic they will stay true to what they have created and not go off the rails - fingers crossed !!
Farrell absolutely disappears into the Penguin. I've never been a fan of his because he always felt like Farrell playing Farrell in various movies. But here he completely transforms - and not just physically - into a completely different person. It's quite impressive
After somehow surviving his encounter with Shane, Daryl and Glenn, Randall somehow found himself transported into another universe and secretly murdered the son of a crime boss and got plastic surgery to mirror his appearance. In The Walking Dead, Randall was nobody. But in Gotham, he was a crown prince of crime.
Victors character actually makes sense, as stated having someone who's not affiliated with the families gives him immense freedom to do things behind their backs. Specifically the end of the episode, they have no way to trace that particular stunt back to Oswald as they don't know about Vic
Between this, Jessica Jones ,and Andor, it's curious how the best stories set inside a shared universe are just a great story that happens to take place in a shared universe, rather than trying to completely upend it. Hmmmm
Collin Ferrel deserves an Emmy for this. His performance has a touch of Tony Soprano, and I love it!
All I see is Tony at times, you can tell he's trying to emulate his voice as well.

“…So-actual New York, then…”
😆!…
I have to admit, your 100% right! But honestly, I think the Penguin from the Gotham TV show would have been a little better. I actually liked that show.
Glad to hear Daredevil mentioned as a comparison for how dark the Penguin is. I was wondering about that as I watched the review. Daredevil is a cut off point for me. I liked the first season of Daredevil a lot, but I only watched one show a day. So many people loved how dark it was that I was afraid they were going to double down for the second season. As it was, I thought the second season of Daredevil was a bit too cartoonish for my taste.
Before I see penguin "where batman?"
After I see penguin "who batman?"
To be honest as soon as I saw it was connected to The Batman with this version of Penguin I was sold. The Batman was really good and Colin Farrell was great as Penguin so it’s nice to see the good writing and good acting carried over.
No lie, I forget that it's Colin Farrell in makeup...I got drawn in and man this show's first episode was SO good.
That foot reveal hit me like the "Quato" reveal did, LOL.
Great show so far. Really enjoyed it.Farrell is phenomenal.
I didn’t even see Collin Farrell until just now. His head tilted down, eyes dart back and forth under a raised eyebrow. “Holy shit. There he is!!”
Just goes to show how great an actor Colin really is. He made the penguin feel real and relatable.
All in all... Great work to the entire team on that pilot... Looking forward to the rest of it.
Honestly nice to see a new show do good here and Drinker enjoys it. Amazing that its Colin Farrel in that makeup, the artists did an incredible job!
Sony wishes it could do what Matt Reeves is able to.
It’s not the show we needed, it’s the show we deserved
I watched the first episode last weekend, and I was astonished that the script wasted no time in getting down to business. That was freaking awesome.
The Penguin and Peacemaker is enough to tell me that DC can make incredible comic book TV shows. While She-Hulk and Secret Invasion show me that Marvel can't.
NGL, I kinda always thought "The Penguin" would be pretty good.
HBO Max have been really putting out gems compared to Disney+.
Clancy Brown looks like he's barely aged over the last 30 years.
You had me at Clancy Brown
Between this, Jessica Jones ,and Andor, it's curious how the best stories set inside a shared universe are just a great story that happens to take place in a shared universe, rather than trying to completely upend it. Hmmmm
