Played this game because of the high praise I heard for it (as well as seeing that you made this, with bocchi and katawa shoujo both recent i solidly trust your taste now) and man it did not disappoint. Great vid. Spoilers if you wanna read my ramblings below. Something I wanna mention because I thought it was cool is that Elster ends up lying in the exact same position as the Elster we see when the busted up unit takes that chestplate, which would imply some sorta time loop situation. To me, the game is about how everything we know breaks down in the face of death. The empire Ariane, Ito, and Erika lived under is so fearful of its demise and so sure in its own greatness that it deeply oppresses its citizens. The Replika units' core traits are the same, but warped into a vile, antagonistic state. Elster herself has become warped. In the game's lore, all newer Elster units are copies of the Penrose Elster. Her initial failure to spare Ariane literally defines her character. For that reason, I don't think Ariane actually summons any Elster. I think that every Elster has chosen to search for Ariane themselves. Despite the pain of her ultimate goal, Elster will literally sacrifice herself a thousand times over to keep her promise to the woman she loves. Things are far outside of any of their control, and that single tragedy has thrown an entire empire into a warped state. Space and time and identity smash together as we sink further and further into our grief. In the face of all that, we can only find closure for ourselves, and only in honoring what they meant to us.
