  • I get questions here and there like "how do you organize a kitchen?". To me, kitchen organization is one of the most important things you need have in any kitchen. It makes cooking less messy, faster, and more fun to do. This is especially important for those who want to cook more often. In this video I have 10 ways/tips and tricks that are super easy to pull off. Nothing too fancy, just plain old efficiency and thought.

thaitichi I have an apartment sized kitchen which means I have one pair of cabinets, and one counter top. I definitely am frustrated by my cooking space very often but I do not let it stop me. Not to say I wouldn’t prefer a nice kitchen like his , I’m just saying if you really want something you don’t let obstacles deter you from doing what you like to do. 😃

It amazes me that apartment designers tend to make the kitchen the most compact space that they can, cramming as much in as they can at the cost of functionality.
And for what? An extra half foot by six feet of room in the living area?
I need that for counter space and cabinets, damnit!

Something I've found are incredibly useful for organization: tension rods. If you have a large open space above your sink with cabinets on either side, like you do in your kitchen, get a tension rod and put it up there. Get some hooks and you can hang frequently used utensils from it. Might look a bit cluttered to some, but I like the aesthetic. Makes it super quick and easy to grab a tool, and makes cleanup easier too, since you can just hang it right back up on the hook instead of worrying about a dish strainer. Done with your spatula? Give it a quick hand wash and throw it back on the hook.
You can also put them in large cabinets, like the one under your sink. Put a tension rod up near the top of the cabinet, then you can hang bottles of cleaning fluids from the trigger.

From my own experience, I always think about/ look up how long something will take before I start cooking anything. Let’s say I’m making a chili, with rice and a side of broccoli. The chili will take the longest (let’s imagine 40 minutes). Then, the rice will take 17 minutes, so after the first 20 minutes of chili cooking, I’ll start the rice. Then, boiling the broccoli will take about 7 minutes, so the last 7 minutes of the rice and chili I will start the broccoli. I’ll do all this thinking, and also all of my food prep (chopping, measuring) before I begin. This way, when things need to get cooked, you can dump them in and move on.
I know this is a) not a video and b) not the creator of this video, and c) 6 months late, but I hope it was somewhat helpful nonetheless.

In "foods & nutrition" class in school, we had to write out what would be done in what order & how long it would take and prepare all our ingredients (wash, chop, measure, etc) before starting to cook. It became a habit. Now, I just make a mental list (unless it's a big meal like thanksgiving, or something) but it helps & having everything ready to go makes such a difference! No burning stuff while you read the recipe (again!) and finish chopping those carrots...

I love your videos! You inspire my home cooking and I love your style. Recently, I designed a garage apartment with the kitchen on these principles. Had a tough time with the small eating/prep area, then decided to use a stainless countertop height prep table on wheels with a little storage underneath for the table. It works great with a few bar height stools, and frankly it was cheaper than a regular table.

I think it's important to remember that it's okay to move things to where they work best for you. Just because you put the dishes in this certain cupboard when you moved in doesn't mean they have to go there if it's not working for you. Experiment, move things, it's your kitchen, make it work for you

The dollar store has shelf inserts, they work pretty well for lighter items and are quite affordable. You can build your own lazy Susan out of some pie tins and marbles. Basically just sandwich the marbles between a pair of pie tins and the tin should rotate around relatively easily.
Also get a labelmaker and label the shelves and containers with what goes in them. It's especially helpful if your spouse isn't quite on board with all of it or your mother-in-law comes over and is putting things away.

Getting a lazy susan for spices is such a game changer. Saves us so much time :) EDIT- PS, I'm about to move into a home with a larger kitchen than I'm used to, & this video will be such a help when setting it up, ty

My father in law LOVES to cook. Whenever he comes to visit, he always wants to cook in our kitchen. During his last visit, I asked him if he enjoys cooking at home now that he sold his restaurant. He said no, but he likes using my kitchen because there’s so much space. I do not live in a mansion...my home is a little less than 2000 sq ft, but I follow the same rules you just mentioned. It makes cooking an easy and pleasurable experience. Great video!

Yes! 100 Percent yes to this! It makes a world of difference to just have a little bit of a system and some organization.

I just subbed and I love your message! I feel the same way about cooking more. I try to show people I work with how easy it is and how much money you save. And if you give it some extra love, you can have restaurant quality.
I also have an obsession with jars. But, it's helpful for buying in bulk. I save plastic and cut like $40 out of my grocery bill!
