I had no idea Tokimeki Memorial had finally received a fan translation! Nearly a decade ago I was a regular on the forums for Gokusaishiki, a very small group who made the translation patch for the DS port of Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side 2. It was such a small but passionate community on there, though sadly the forum no longer exists. (Their WordPress page with the patch itself is still around though). I even helped edit some mini game graphics to English as a part of their TMGS3 translation patch before they canceled it.

Hey! I'm a Graphics Editor for Tokimeki Memorial Girls Side 4 and would like to say we are about 50~% done with the text translation and 90% done with the graphics and assets translation and we are still active! So the fan passion is still going strong.
As for the not girls side, I believe Tokimeki Memorial 2 had a fan translation going but mysteriously halted out of nowhere.

Someone is working on TM2 right now. He said he made a big breakthrough, but we'll have to wait a bit for the news.@@cepopeye

These games have gigantic scripts though so TM2 simply being too large for any group of translators is understandable

Ah~ how nostalgic. Tokimeki Memorial Girls Side was my introduction to Otome Games, and the gameplay was something that I hadn’t encountered ever or after. I remember really liking the dress up and sport festival mini games and searching internet guides for the dates and what stats to grow up. I always felt that mobile otome games, while having better stories, just couldn’t compare in the gameplay.
Hahaha for now to scratch that otome itch I’m content with Rune Factory and Story of Seasons.

This video showed up in my recommendations at random. Never even heard of this game, but I decided to click in anyways, and I'm glad I did! Always glad to learn something new.
I don't usually comment on videos, but there's a lot of effort on display here & here's hoping that some engagement will help get you the following you deserve. ♡
    Seriously, under 1000 subs? How??

First of all, thank you for making this video about Tokimeki Memorial. It brings back so many fond memories of mine in the mid 90s to early 2000. It's really sad I'm unable to replay it again as I'm 48 now 😂😂😂. I have played before Tokimeki Memorial Forever With You, Tokimeki Memorial 2 & Tokimeki Memorial 3. But my top favourite will always be Tokimeki Memorial 2. If there's an English translation version for Tokimeki Memorial 2 & 3, i will not hesitate to buy a new console to replay these games again. It doesn't matter which console as long it's compatible with my plasma TV😂😂😂😂😂.

Hey AB2S, I just came across your channel and I love what you're doing. The effort and lengths that you go to in order make each of these video essays really shows. I'm doing something similar for each game in the PS1 library alphabetically and region free, so naturally your style and approach appeal to me.
Looking forward to binging your channel :) subbed and followed on twitter

oh hey man, I forgot to check your channel since I've been busy on RL, after your video about the TM collection, I also waiting for this video to come out.
Edit 1: Okay, seem that Tokimeki Memorial is popular like 20+ years ago, and for me, I started to like the TM series when I accidentally know it on some video on youtube, the opening song itself. I like the 80-90s vibes in japan especially, and when I decided to like the opening song, I research the other information about this series, and I found that it was really popular, tho only released in Japan. I lost hope, when I can't play it, and only can hear the soundtrack, but there is some form of media, Anime... yeah, even though the anime didn't bring the experience when you play, I find it also charming, even when the anime only have OVA and Only Love is from TM Online, I still enjoyed the bit of the series.
After 2 years of knowing TM Series (I think I know the series on 2020), I waited for that fan translation, I didn't even care where the platform was gonna be, as long as I can play it, I'm happy, and then they release the fan translation and I'm happy because I can play the one of the best dating simulation visual novel.
I would like to thank DDS Translation/Translated Games/Tom Translator, Tim Rogers, for being the pioneer of making Tokimeki Memorial popular again, and not forget AnyButton2Start, My Friend who is also obsessed with the TM series, just like me lol.
Edit 2: One man can hope for Konami to localize TM Series.

@RandomPasserby OnTheInternet thanks for the respond, but me myself never interested on any shoujo media, well except film/tv series and anime.
But i'm also happy that the girl side is getting updated and have some english patch except the 4th one, since it's still new and it's on switch.
I do hope Konami will be going back to their old series, like this boy side of TM series.
One man can hope about that.

Look, I'm young, but I have a fair experience in the otome and shoujo department as one of my passions. The Tokimeki Memorial GS series brought me in fairly quickly after finding a parody of it in Pop Team Epic, and I genuinely like the games. They are, really fun, but I still want to understand what's up with the japanese side of it, so you could say these games inspire people to reach more knowledge, maybe.

I remember when i first discovered tokimeki memorial I was slightly upset that there was not much fanfare in the western sphere. I have a feeling that this has now changed one year and change after this review. Thanks. This mans hairline is beautiful too. He looks like he's 25 but somehow was born in the Showa jidai. I'm glad I dont have to lower my jlpt a number or 2 now.
His big brain and meandering thoughts might be ever so difficult to digest, but I will break this video up into 5 nights and watch to completion. I couldn't believe someone made a 5 hour passion project over a game that gets ignored so much. Pretty cool

Is it me or does tokimemo have a way better gameplay loop than most modern dating sims? Point and click needs more modern attention. Playing world of horror rn on ps4/ps5 and remembered how much I love 8 bit point and click

My understanding of why the SNES version was chosen was simply that that was the on they were able to get working. The PSX and Saturn versions are allegedly much tougher nuts to crack. The amount of translation work is comparable in both the issue is just that nobody has managed to insert text in a nice looking way in the PSX one. I think the PC Engine one might be a better target though, as it does have voice acting.

Yeah, that hacker specializes in SFC. He doesn't do CD systems, as far as I'm aware. Both PCE and PSX versions of this game are supposedly very difficult to hack, on top of all things. That's the sad truth to it.

I played Tokimemo until i get what aimed for, Saki, and yeah, the SFC version lost many detail that FWY version had. And woah i didnt know it has cutscene, like what? I'm still missing out then.

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 26 днів тому

The FMV is relegated to intro and ending scenes, nothing inbetween. The SFC version has a lower resolution for the sprites, but the game still looks incredible for the 16 bit console. There's also 2 GBC games sort of based on the first TM, each with an exclusive new girl not found in any other version. The GBC games even have a tiny amount of speech, and the spritework for the handheld is absolutely incredible. It's a shame the guy never even mentioned it in this video, though he likely doesn't know of both cartridges.

Enabling animated cutscenes is trivial, by the way, emulator does everything for you.

Playing this in ZSNES in the 90s when you're 16 is weird. Playing this in your late 30s in English is really weird. I'm waiting for the 2020s dating sim personally. Tindermeki Memorial, where they are actually my age now.

15:18 This is such an elitist attitude. Tokimeki Memorial will never get an official western release due to the current state Konami is in and because of the general attitude and contempt of westerners toward games like this. Anyone who is interested in this game should be grateful any translated version even exists.

From these fragments flashed on your video, I can tell that the translation is not even that good. Way too localized. I played it in Japanese.
First of all, why they altered the name order? It's a significant cultural feat and it should never be switched to western order. They aren't using honorifics too. Honorifics plays a huge role in characterization for games like this. The worst thing is that you can't even hear them because SFC version has no voice acting.
Welp, I'd recommend learning Japanese and experience the superior, original version.
