Translating The Past: Is AI the Future of Video Game Emulation?
In the midst of the Anti AI Art movement and the ever evolving complexity of the algorithms they are rallying against, this video essay discusses current flaws and future potential of AI Translation technology within Retro Game Emulation. Through rigorous testing of 3 games that never got localizations or fan translations (Tokimeki Memorial 2, Sakura Wars 2 & Boku No Natsuyasami 2), we will see how well Retroarch and ZTranslate's AI Translator works for the average player. We will also discuss the ways in which this technology could one day be used in more formal localisations by professional teams, and wel will come to understand the nuances of the AI debate.

what t shirt u wearing 👀👀👀
great vid i wanna get into skate 2 cos i play skate 3 but it runs pretty poorly on my ps3
eheheh unfortunately it runs poorly on everyone's ps3 and xbox 360 for that matter. the backwards compatible version on newer xboxs is the only (official) smooth way to play. rpcs3 is ur friend for unofficial smoothness (but i didn't tell u)
I remember before they announced a Steam version I was telling myself I'd be fine with the 3DS version, assuming both would be released outside of Japan. How unfortunate that it wasn't in the end.
Left out plenty of video games based off nyc
if u want a comprehensive list wikipedia is ur friend
@AnyButton2Start google search engine is your friend as well try using it more next time you decide to do a video
@@CP2793 the fact that you think google would be the one place to go for research shows why i was the one making videos and you were not, thank you
Your almost unibrow is magnificent, I wanna fraindship you
good video but you're looking too much into the US influence stuff. that style of fashion was just popular in japanese cities in the 90s. It's like how the Leon Kennedy haircut and Asuka Mishima haircut were in every jp other game in the 90s. That fashion also never left, it was just contained to its respective subculture. What happened was the internet let everyone pick and choose what they like from each subculture and fashion and as a result those subcultures basically don't have a real unique visual identity anymore.
lol i would argue it was popular due to in large part to western influence but i spent 10 mins explaining that in the video so there is no point in reitterating now
@@AnyButton2Start I meant it was just the style of the time and was more likely included to be "cool" and fashionable rather than an an intentional thematic statement since the game was heavily inspired by the wangan subculture
@@jealousyofthesun intention was never the argument, it is more about the thematic connection that is inherent within the style itself. i'm sure much of racing lagoon was not thought too deeply through but never the less the decisions made in its design (especially visual design) place it within a deep context whether intentional or not
curse you, you made me take advantage of the 90% off steam sale for watch dogs legion.
my legacy haunts me
I would if there was an English patch
anyone know what livestream tim rogers talks about the fan translation? i wanna check out the clip in context
sorry i really can't remeber, i wish i had noted down the date
I would love to play the 3ds version eventually!!! Just finished it a few weeks ago on switch so I'm on to other titles I haven't played, you betcha imma play dq3 hd 2d tooooo
C'est similaire à ma ville ❤
incredibly high effort stuff, you love to see it
That thumbnail is peak!
I played Tokimemo until i get what aimed for, Saki, and yeah, the SFC version lost many detail that FWY version had. And woah i didnt know it has cutscene, like what? I'm still missing out then.
my mind immediately went to the fact that mario's voice actor in a lot of early japanese animated media (the great mission to rescue princess peach, mario amada anime series, mario and yoshi's adventure land, etc.) recorded a bunch of music during the 70s and 80s, including the very city pop-sounding songs "fuyu no sunshine beach" and "morning call", and maybe a few others that i'm not aware of (I DO NOT SUPPORT THE GUY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he took advantage of a fan, had an affair with her, was supposedly abusive with her and got her pregnant and forced her to have an abortiom even though he told her he was infertile. also he supposedly 🍇d the fan. fuck him)
No offense, but the controls combined with the terrible draw distance are REALLY hard to get into. I'm usually quite good at racing games. This was like learning a new alien genre of gameplay 😅
git gud
Your character is called AAAAAAAAAAAAA LOL
lol i hadn't learnt any japanese when i made this video so that explains that
max payne 1 and 2 NY vibe was something else
WHERE DID YOU GET THE SHIRT i’m going crazy trying to find it online… i need it
it was an old magazine competion shirt from the forever with you's release, I found it on depop a few years back but have never found another since
I really wish they put the 3ds version in the West because I really loved dragon quest 8 and 7.
Have you played the Midtown Madness series? 2 takes place in London, while 3 takes place in Paris.
I think Rockstar really likes Los Angeles.
When you mentioned Mafia II being the game that gave a historical depiction of New York City, it reminded me of one game that you forgot: Assassin's Creed III. It's probably the only game that shows NYC before American independence.
We need Rio or São Paulo
Can't you use Google translate for audio and text
Great video
GTA 4 has one of the most if not the most realistic representation of NYC, which is absolutely stunning
Does Polnareff's hair make him the tallest Jojo character?
As a Japanese speaker and a fan of SEGA I could actually help with this... might work on translations after finals.
Good luck. We've been waiting for a translation for pretty much 20 years.
I had given up on the 3d version, but think i'm gonna pick-up it back up
May I ask where you got all your referencing from aside from the show
I mean if there was an english version sure. Not about to replay a 100+ hour JRPG without being able to understand a single word. I can already imagine the agony of choosing the correct spell 😂
u underestimate your own visual comprehension, its really not that hard to play games in japanese
I've only played the 2D version!
Maybe sometime soon an snes demake of ff7 might happen
i just want to say that this is genuinely one of my favorite/one of the best videos on this platform. my opinion doesn’t exactly matter but good work. ❤️
Extremely well done video, I find the 3DS graphics and it’s aesthetic quite charming, makes it a bigger shame that it’s japan only. Hopefully it gets translated in the future so people like me can replay one of the best games in a different way.
White boys rock!
Great video bro! Lol you reminded me about this lol i payed for the bounty like 1k and never got around to using it. I gotta get on that >.< Sadly it made as a paid bounty, so i doubt there be much improvement but atleast he keeps up the website ztranslate for web so you dont have to set up a local server. But hey someone might be inspired and pick it up to improve it :)) The sakura was bug is most likly a emulator bug and not specific to the ai, all the ai does is take a screen shot, send it off to get translate and displaythe translation, if theres a diffrent core or core build you could try that.
Is it me or does tokimemo have a way better gameplay loop than most modern dating sims? Point and click needs more modern attention. Playing world of horror rn on ps4/ps5 and remembered how much I love 8 bit point and click
I believe GTA London was developed in Canada.
John GOLLY A 18:23
How could you make this video without assassins creed syndicate like actually. That was the main reason why I watched this video come on man
stay mad, mid game
at least the characters somewhat have their faces changing animations as they speak too
Matsueda worked on the OST for the PlayOnline viewer which FFXI players tend to be super nostalgic about. There are a few Racing Lagoon tracks which are very similar to those found in PlayOnline.
i think its cathartic someway to finding out about this video 1 day before its birthday release, this game really ilustrated to me how japan is at my childhood and i always had this feeling that japan is like a promising land or some shit. btw thank you so much for this incredible video, its a blessing to have someone share something of quality for a game that is so dear to me.

Im surprised this channel never took off . Crazy you find good content in little corners of the YT space like this
it will soon enough, i should have a film out by the end of this year that i'm hoping will grab people's attention
Drive Parallel Lines was such a great Game playing in New York
Honestly, seeing how self-aware Sega is actually makes me want to do a mockumentary about them.
