CRAZY MAD DOG APPROACH😮 ‘REVISED’ DESCRIPTION

  • When I’m filming and chatting to the viewers, in this case Members, I’m always scanning the airfield for anything that’s interesting, but this one caught me right out as you’ll probably gather 😂
We’ve seen/filmed the Twin props taking this approach pattern into Rwy 33 using this tight left turn, so it’s nothing unexpected. But in the five times we’ve been here, we’ve never seen a DC9 make this same approach! Seems a late turn created that dramatic banking turn to adjust their line-up, but the whole correction is awesome, especially as they put it down so smooth - proper Freight Dog style 💪🏻
Here’s the official word from a viewer ‘afterburner33’ who was listening-in on ATC. It was a later change of runway…
The MD was on approach to 7, but was asked if they could take 33 by ATC due to the close trailing 747 behind them (who had raised concerns with ATC just prior about the spacing). The MD crew said they could take 33, and hence the late turn onto that runway.
That’s some handling skills, especially to put it down so smooth and on the centre line. Ex Airforce or Navy Carrier pilot maybe 🤔 so cool 😎

Just outside Learmonth Airport, on the way to Exmouth, by the beach is a sign "Balls of Steel" - dating back to WW2 - large metal balls moored in the Gulf and used boats or barges during Operation Potshot - just made me think of this! Learmonth is a military and civilian airport - interesting place to fly through

@@Steve757-fl1hd {Suggest listening to the recording on LiveATC.} Before accepting the clearance change, the crew asks for a wind check (it was 320 at 4) and then took the clearance to land on condition of a long landing on 33. Obviously they were comfortable with the request to keep their base leg for 33 north of 7R and make a very short final instead of continuing for 7R. Crew's discretion ended up benefiting the BigJet TV members watching live. I wonder if Everts' pilots have send this vid around on email :)

Reminds me of 1980 when I worked on the ramp at LAX. I'm sitting on a belt-loader (on a break) and a PanAm 747 is just starting its takeoff roll, when another PanAm 747 (cargo) was coming in on the same runway. I thought "this will be interesting". Suddenly, the approaching plane made a 35-40 degree bank to the left, and landed perfectly on the other runway. Barely any time between the bank recovery and touchdown... it was amazing and I'll never forget it.
