in one of my latest trips I played this song and closed my eyes. I came to the thought that the riddle may be about the creation of humanity. earth, water, fire, and air, BOUND WITH SKIN! (in the garden of eden...) and as I 'answered' the riddle, my body moved like various primitive animals... too bad I can never BEGIN...
I love how 5000 spirits, Hangman's, and WeeTam/Big Huge all have absolutely killer opening tracks. This almost seems to be a song about remembering things from the singer's (Robin W) past. I love how some things he remembers very clearly, like the lady Mrs.Thompson giving him a bear. And how other things are vague like, "Bridgette and some people lived upstairs". Also how random things can become lifelong memories, for example the singer remembering getting a bear from Mrs.Thompson, this for whatever reason had stuck in his memory. That's how it works in real life, some things you remember forever quite clearly even though they are trivial or "not important". For example I remember quite clearly my brother when we were small children, telling me once not to crumple up napkins after using them. No reason to remember that, but I do very clearly, what was said, where we were and who was there. And then again I have those hazy memories also, like there was this kid that lived near my grandfathers house that me and my brother hung out with occasionally, yet I cant recall his name, or how he looked.
When i heard this and that entire album "Hangman's..." at 15 i can say that change my life. The good part of this mediums is that things like this come to light. This band,N.Drake,Crimson ,Hammill and so many others were, for english speakers as a second language,a great way to learn, thanks to that albums with the lyrics in print,in those far 70's,Thanks!
Licorice is mentioned in these lyrics ! I saw ISB perform in NYC and I used to play a Very Cellular Song in my 4 am radio slot given the long run time I could put the other records away that were played on my show. This is such unique music and always takes fourty years off my life when I now listen to it. Richard Thompson mentions Licorice's disappearance in his new book and suggests she was found in2018 (a one sentence statement that is quite puzzling and unsupported other than this one sentence written in the book).
That's fascinating. Thompson's book has now been bumped up to the top of my reading list. Ordered today. I wonder what the providence behind that sentence is. It would be lovely to know things worked out for her.
Music to give you a contact high - it resonates on a different level altogether. Love the peaceful focus and ambience of this song, like some mysterious organic garden.

Looking through the comments...sad that folks are remembering this often only as a drug reference. These guys are simply brilliant. Not saying that this is wrong as a small part of it, if that was your experience. Just saying give them their due as amazing artists without the qualification.
That's true, but songs, and generally speaking every product of human creativity that can be consumed, or comunnicated, has a meaning that often goes far beyond the creator himself/herself, and it's this aspect the real value of the art, especially of the music. You can give this aspect the name of a drug, because even if it's not properly a substance, a material, nonetheless makes the mind work, and even makes a better life. Regarding this particular song, my drug was the cunt of my french teacher that made a gift to me recording a compilation. I did not undestand at that time that she was happy to open her legs to me letting me come in, but a few decades after we met again and we had a very good time listening this very song. A very cellular song, indeed. :)

Yes thats Marianne. All of it is from Kenneth Angers' Lucifer Rising" . Very famous underground film made in 1968. Original music was done by Jimmy Page then scrapped. @Ghoopty you're welcome. It's well worth seeing the original film - Jimmy Page did the original soundtrack but he fell out with the director so Bobby Beausoleil (even though he was in prison at the time) re-did it.

It's a made up word - Robin came up with it by rolling a dice and assigning different numbers to different letters. Read that in the great article on ISB in Mojo magazine.

Licorice is not in Sacremento - you've been reading forums and blogs posted by anonymous people you don't have a hope to verify. [yes, I've read all that cruft, too - people making big claims from behind the safety of computer screens and having a larf at your expense] She was last DOCUMENTED to have been seen hitch-hiking across the Arizona desert in 1987. She had no beef with her family, and when you are gone and no one has seen you for that long, face it, you are dead. She was said to be behaving erratically (LSD damage bringing on deep-rooted psychotic issues?) prior to this. I would bet she wandered off and couldn't get back to a road and died of dehydration in the desert. It's a big wasteland out there in Southern Cal-N. Mex-Ariz - very easy for your body not to be found. Sad. R.I.P.
It's documented by journalists who interviewed people who last saw her. And if she was behaving erratically, with some mental problems, she very well could have taken LSD. The ISB did indeed use a variety of drugs, even sneaking them after supposedly converting to Scientology. And neither of us knows exactly what happened to her - my guess is just as valid as your denial of it. Ever been around someone who's disturbed? They do irrational things. Unless you were physically around her the last couple of days of her life, it's pure speculation. But I have no doubt she is no longer with us. And since no remains have turned up, the wastelands of the American south-west desert (which in winter does not get 110 degrees - far from it) will dispose of a corpse rather rapidly via nature. R.I.P. - she was a great performer and lovely woman and it is very sad that the Incredibles couldn't hold it together after 'Changing Horses'.
Were you with her in Arizona right before she died? And I don't think she's a rotting corpse in th desert - that would be well over by now - it's been more than 10 years. She's dead. Her sister hired private detective agency and no luck - there has been absolutely no sighting of her since the day she was last scene hitchhiking in the desert. I think I read that the family moved to have her legally declared, but of course that would be obscure info to try and gather is they are not speaking any longer on the issue.
And by the way - nobody knows what someone will do - there is no crystal ball - right before that kid in Washington opened fire at his school last Friday he was in class acting totally normal, friendly, joking around with the other kids. Next moment, bang bang! When someone's disturbed, which by all accounts she was in those last few days, anything can happen. She could have developed bipolar syndrome, and went out of her head. She could even have been murdered out there, and hidden. There's no telling if and until some sort of remains are found.
NONE of which has anything to do with the last few days of her life. If she was hitch-hiking across the desert - which was confirmed - and behaving erratically - also confirmed - and then has completely disappeared - it's almost certain that she is DEAD, and it is probable she died in the desert wastelands where a body is not likely to turn up, even today. Too thinly patrolled.
It's neither excellent nor terrible - just sad. I am sad she died in such a straight. It's too bad nobody tried to help her in those last days. There's no reason to be unnecessarily graphic - what good does that do? She's just another statistic among so many thousands of other missing girls.
This is an incredibly beautiful song with tons of depth and dimension. Just amazing.
This has to be one of the most magical things ever written

The natural cards revolve ever changing
Seeded elsewhere planted in the garden fair grow trees, grow trees
Tongues of the sheer wind
Setting you foot where the sand is untrodden
The ocean that only begins
Listen a woman with a bulldozer built this house now
Carving away the mountain whose name is your childhood home
We were trying to buy it buy it buy it
Someone was found killed there all bones bones dry bones
[Chorus, sort of]
Earth water fire and air
Met together in a garden fair
Put in a basket bound with skin
If you answer this riddle
You'll never begin
[Verse 2]
Born in a house where the doors shut tight
Shadowy fingers on the curtains at night
Cherry tree blossom head high snow
A busy main road where I wasn't to go
I used to sit on the garden wall
Say hello to people going by so tall
Hallo to the postman's stubbly skin
Hallo to the baker's stubbly grin
Mrs thompson gave me a bear
Brigitte and some people lived upstairs
The natural cards revolve ever changing
Seeded elsewhere planted in the garden fair grow trees, grow trees

And there was a tent you played cards with the
Soldiers in, don't worry we won't send anyone
After you they screamed
But me and Licorice saw the last of them one
Misty twisty day
Across the mournful morning moor motoring away
Singing ladybird, ladybird what is your wish
Your wish is not granted unless it's a fish
Your wish is not granted unless it's a dish
A fish on a dish is that what you wish
