Mike...I live in Chelmsford Essex UK..I thought you were fabulous, such an amazing teacher, and very kind Gentleman.. I have through the lock down studied at home, and over again the last year have attained three drum grades with Rockschool...taken at local studios....grades 3, 4 and 6. I would never have dreamed of attaining .. I'll eventually do grades 7 and 8. A great deal of my support has been from Mike Barnes Drums in the UK...who I visit...and have Skype lessons with Mike Michalkow. At 75... I'm very pleased to have done this . What you have said today has been so helpful, that we are all individuals. Thankyou Mike God bless you Colin Reynolds
ONce again Mike you bring tremendous encouragement to the drumming community with your simple, yet profound tips and instruction. You have become one of the greatest drumming influences for me and I love the attitude you consistently display. You bring real value and benefit to the drumming community and it is a joy to see how far God has brought you through the decade that I have watched your videos. I always get a treasure from watching your videos. Kudos Mike!
Mike thanks so much for everything you do for the drum community, your lessons, performance’s and stories, always put a smile in my face. Excellent job congratulations 🎈
Super inspiring from start to finish, Mike! I didn't think it would get so emotional, but I'm happy it did. It's words like yours that make the practice sessions worth the effort. Perhaps it's a reminder we all need from time to time.
So gutted to have missed this in person but so grateful you put so much effort into get it looking/sounding so good for UA-cam! Super inspiring as always, loved every second of this!
Mike I have been following you for *seems like half my life* seriously...I recall the day your site went live ...and when the saying "spicy sauce" and shit like that took hold. YOU sir are an inspiration to me and have kept me playing when times got tough, busy and the joy was sucked out of it...turn on something from Mike and BAM! I am right back in the mix shaking shit off my walls. Your entire presentation was just spectacular, BUT; that bit on the hi-hat was impeccable and remined me of, not only how the cool feels get attention for 3 seconds of a song. Rather, how groove, feel, and the little nuances in your playing capture the heart for the entire song. Thank you again for being my anchor throughout my career and my journey towards excellence.
Amazing lessons and playing, Mike! You always inspire, and you are such an incredible teacher. I've learned so much from you at camps and your lessons. When I hear you play, the first thing that makes me know I'm listening to Mike Johnston is your hi hat and snare work. It's very unique and has a sound that's hard to replicate because its so subtle, yet profound, and always CLEAN. You always said to care about every hit and that clearly shows up in your playing. I need to go practice now!
Meeting you and watching your main stage and education room sessions made a massive impression on me and truly inspiring. Not just as a drummer, but a life lesson too. These videos keep me smiling and 45 mins is never too much.. we can handle plenty more :) I’m only a hobby drummer nowadays sadly but love trying / playing and practicing everyday. Hope you get back next year 👍
I started playing drums over 40 yrs ago and to me this was a Master Class. Yep, played that Gadd Al Jarreau lick on a cover band. Subconsciously playing a rudiment and not realizing it ! Never thought about it the way Mike explained it and expanded or re-applied to other areas of the kit. And that my friends is a world class teacher. Best online drum instructor IMHO. Thanks Mike. 🙂
Mike- LOVE your stuff. You're the teacher/talent I wish I had had when I started playing as a kid more than 50 years ago. (5th grade thru college/mid-30's) I can no longer play (wrist/hand injuries) but remembering back: the hardest thing for me to get used to, to integrate into my own kit was....High-hats. Trying to get that 4-way independence, making my Left foot lead/contribute was tough sledding. Although I can't play anymore, my love/Appreciation of those that still can never will die. YOU are a huge talent- and what I most admire (aside from your teaching talent) is your VARIETY of influences and how that has manifested into real world playing #chops.
Mike I met you briefly at a clinic in Wilmington NC . They lost your cymbals in transit or drums can’t remember. But I remember how incredibly humble and chill you were even being a bit scrambled. This clinic is a great way to introduce to players of all skills to be themselves and they have their own voice. I’m a clinician for Vic Firth too, and I always involve other players to play in the clinic . You keep getting better on this amazing instrument we choose to play for life. I’ve been playing professionally 49 yrs … I keep growing .. loving what I choose to do … 🔥
Mike, muchas gracias por compartir tus conocimientos. Un gran Maestro sin dudas. Gracias. Mike, thanks a lot for sharing your drumming knowledge. You´re a great drum teacher and also a great drum player too. And teaching, anything it´s not easy at all it requires a lot of knowledge and a lot of effort. Thanks a lot from Buenos Aires
Hey Mike, what a MONSTER lesson and great content here. You love what you do and it shines like f... hell! Amazing and you earned it. Keep it up and all the best! Big drumming hug from Germany, Jochen
Every time I watch one of Mike's videos I learn something new he's all about the groove and playing the song keep on drumming buddy I really enjoyed it
Hi Mike. I have already seen all your performance two days ago, at drummer`s review channel. Very good job man ! I was able to confirm one more tieme, that you are a great teacher and a beautiful human be ! I always follow you. Thank you for sharing and greetings from Formosa Argentina !
Excellence, yet again. You're the happiest and most passionate drummer I've ever seen and it's infectious and very relatable. Great job, Mike A BIG fan from South Africa. :)
Was an honour to be there to watch this Mike!! I was the guy who was SUPER ill and falling asleep whenever I sat down at that show, so it’s a testament to your time on stage that I was awake for the whole set!! Literally only bothered to drag my broken body to the event because I didn’t want to miss this! 😅🙌🏼🙌🏼
My friend I see you just loving the fanfare. And why da heck not, YOU EARNED IT MY FRIEND. IT'S THE PASSION THAT KEEPS US GOING. CARRY THE PASSION TORCH MY FRIEND, YOU WILL TAKE IT FAR. Thanks for showing us something easier to see with your drumming, YOUR PASSION.
Awww man, this almost makes up for missing you because I had covid. OK no it doesn't - it makes me wish even more that I'd been there! Another time, I hope..... That was really interesting, entertaining and properly educational - I learnt quite a lot from those 45 minutes! Also: yes, Helen is the best :)
I salute the composer who wrote the song for “your voice” Mike.U didn’t even sound like a “copy paste “ drummer or a sessionist.it’s purely you.that’s hard to find nowadays.you the man mike.
Great eye opening the part about the reggae, we usually hear about minor chords for ballads or sad songs, or something like that, and it shows how Drums also have high impact on that.
subscribed! great work I will look forward to many more of your videos! Hey Mike are those Meinl 15 BFR hats? I play rock ...some Tool many different genres, but looking up these cymbals the drum shops always push them just for jazz and I am seeing more and more players that do not play jazz using them, thoughts?
So I'm taking away from this that I need to pay much more attention to my left foot and definitely buy those hats, because good jaysus they sound amazing.
Inspiring! I was more interested in your words Mike than what you were playing. Don't get me wrong.... your playing is awesome, that's after all why I follow you and your channel.... but I caught my self smiling at the "make this beat happier" section... Immediately in my head I started an upbeat HiHat chick..... and then that's exactly what you started to play and I thought to myself, yeah alright maybe I understand this game a little more than I give myself credit for. Definitely got something from this and you have my utmost respect as a musician. Cheers!
Hey Mike! What would you call the kind of Tom flam with snare fill at the 1 minute 20 seconds mark? It just sounds absolutely killer and I need to find a video to get it in to my box of tricks! From a long time listener, thanks for your amazing efforts 🙏
Mike’s approachability and teaching ability continue to distract from the fact that he is becoming a legendary player with touch like Greb and Gadd. Class act and a monster on the kit. Thanks Mike for the inspiration
That's how all rolling risers are. It's like playing on a trampoline, lol. I refuse to be that guy at the drum festivals that complains about gear or circumstances so I just focus on the positives like "Holy S*%T, I get paid to play my instrument in front of people that know what bearing edges are! This is EPIC!!!" lol
Wow, was definitely not expecting a reply from you yourself. Thanks. Think I’m gonna sign up to the website for a bit, looks a really clean, clear easy to follow set up

Mate, I should've added, it's about t up stoke. Down stroke is t release. Up stroke is t regrip and tap(hard or soft depending on t note), in that one motion. Moeller technique. Utube has 1000's of lessons on that.
@@woody4269 Thank you. So he must favor his middle finger and not his Index line I prefer, just works better for me. That means his index is free white skiing Moeller and mine is in use, because i grip my stick with index and thumb. I'm working on my Moeller technique, but
This is not about drums. This is about humanity and heart. Greetings from France.

1st class clinician. That final thing he did, his voice, wow that was so so slick. Incredible and really unique.
I think I enjoy hearing what you say and how you say it, as much as I enjoy hearing what you play and how you play it!
That means more than you know! 🙏🍵🙏

15 yr old towards the beginning sounded really good. His timing and feel are really good for someone that young.
Agreed - he actually had the best feel and “voice” IMO
Such a wonderful teacher.
