What about people who transition after puberty? What about lung capacity? The average female has 4.3 liters of lung capacity, while the average male has 6 liters. Wouldn't this give males a significant advantage in endurance based sports, such as long runs/swims?

And it certainly shouldn’t be made by religious hate groups with a massive financial incentive to help anti-LGBTQ folks. I’d understand that, but if you participate in women’s sports as a trans women (in most, not all cases), it’s not fair to the others. You work hard to compete but the others also work hard. You win by a big shot and they feel it’s unfair, which it is, it’s considered insensitive and rude, you show no sympathy for those that work hard while you participate with an unfair advantage. They start to despise you and people like you. Trans people want to be seen as an equal but it just can’t be. They don’t want their own (sports) category no matter how unfair it is for others. I understand the passion for sports and I wholeheartedly support the LGBTQ+ community. You can see where I’m coming from, if you are born a male you have an advantage. It doesn’t matter what you take to stop it, you will always have that advantage (even if it’s just a small one),It really depends on the situation and person I guess. Some are more even, while others are not, and they know this and continue anyways, regardless of anybody else’s feelings.

I have 3 comments to make here (MtF myself, but never really cared for sports):
    1. Calling transphobes uneducated will get them mad and will cause them to stop listening to reason (although I guess they weren't doing that anyway).
    2. Although I was weaker compared to most boys, even during puberty, I wouldn't dare say I could compete fairly with cis women. I'd still have needed a pretty long time on HRT to get to that point.
    3. You saying transgender people are born with lower muscle mass etc compared to cis people of their AGAB: what is your source for this? I find it hard to believe either way. It would give a definitive binary answer to the question of whether someone is trans, without even asking them (which kind of defeats the point).
EDIT: oh I see you did cite sources. Well, my point still stands.

I’m a trans girl and amateur powerlifter, and I have to say, claiming our bodies have been closer in strength to a cis woman throughout puberty seems off. By that logic, we would never have to take hormones to compete fairly against cis women. The problem with trans people in sports isn’t trans people, it’s with the classification of sports into 2 groups: men and women, as if that’s enough. But at the same time, I can see how making trans women and trans men categories is icky because it implies we’re not just as much of women or trans men aren’t just as much men. Frankly, it makes more sense, cause even with the current system you'd have women that could probably break concrete with their fists, if they tried hard enough, against people who can barley hold 35 pounds.

That's what i've been thinking as well. A similar system as to weight classes like we see in boxing, wresting, and mma.
But making the sections based on specifics tailored to each sport. Because not every sport can be fairly segregated by weight/body mass alone. So we can make speed classes to compete in, with 5-10 second ranges for each class.
Or like track and field you got multiple varieties of competition within each sport multiple types of running races at various distances/intensity or multiple throwing competitions like discus, shot, hammer, javelin. So you could compete by distance thrown.
Basketball is a tricky one, but based on personal experience, i think we could easily justify full integration of that into a unisex league of sorts. There's a strength aspect when playing center down by the basket but the rest is down to basic physical fitness and your skill.
Football (USA) is a bit trickier to integrate and make genderless. Especially when playing as a lineman, strength and size play a big part in doing well in those positions. Aside from one or two other positions adding women into a predominantly male sport wouldn't be too hard to rationalize. but would also be extremely difficult to implement still.
Football/soccer, just make it gender neutral already. There's some strength aspects i guess, with how hard/fast you can kick the ball, making more difficult to stop/defend against it. But i think it's mostly strategy, skill and endurance that makes a difference.
Baseball/Softball is an interesting/tricky dilemma though. although they are basically the same sport, there are still key differences in how they are played and with some of the rules. The size of the ball used and how they pitch being the most notable differences. Idk how to integrate the two sports while preserving their uniqueness (at this point they are basically separate sports who are closely linked, kinda like cousins)
I'm not even gonna touch hockey, because even though i'm a minnesotan i don't know nearly enough about this sport to begin debating how this would play out.

This is a pretty good video. Although, some of the facts arent quite correct. I think her name was Christine Jorgensen competed in females tennis in the 1960s. Also fun fact, the same testing to disqualify trans women today was developed in the 40s I believe to disqualify a cis woman from competing as she was winning. The whole testosterone levels thing. It's not that trans persons bodies were born closer to that of our identity, it's that transitioning get us there. Muscle mass and strength, bone density, height, and stamina is affected. For me I didn't transition until my early 30s. I played boys football in high school. I was 6 ft 275 lbs of muscle. I competed with boys that were 140 lbs. Literally half of me. No one cared. I sent ALOT of people away in an abulance.from what I hear some never recovered. I squatted 800lbs benched 230lbs. I hit people so hard I broke my own helmet frequently. Now after transitioning, I'm 200 lbs, 5' 9" my feet even shrank 3 sizes. I get tired easy, I need more sleep, and I have trouble lifting 75 lbs. My hips got wider which was really painful while it was doing that. I even had a point where I was having pregnancy symptoms. Weird cravings, morning sickness, lactating, etc. Now every month I go through a few days of mood swings, and cramps and my boobs hurting with decreased energy. Oh yeah those are clear advantages lmao.

I have a lot of trans people in my life, mostly trans men. I dont know how common this is but from my experience alone trans women will commonly have a closer strength / build to someone who is born with female genitalia than the average man (i dont like talking so broadly tho) my friends have told me this is because they want to look more slender, to them it feels more feminine.
While it is the case that they might not be as strong as the average man (making it unfair for them to be forced to compete against men, and also pretty discriminatory and dismissive of their gender identity). It is also the case that if they decided to start competing in sports they have a large genetic advantage and a much heigher ceiling for muscle mass (making it unfair for people born with female genitalia to be forced to compete against trans females)
i honestly hope no one is reading this coz im rambling now
my belief is that the solution to this problem is to allow men to compete against men and women to compete against women. I'm not sure how they would decide who is male and who is female (for example could someone who identifies as male without male genitalia be allowed to compete as male?) i dont know, i feel like they should be able to tho, its only sport for fucks sake i think trans inclusivity is much more important than a fair sport.
but then it all circles back round to the undeniable fact that it IS actually an unfair playing field and some people really really hate that, so is it discrimination if these people decide to play their own sports and only allow genetic males against genetic males and vice versa ??
for that i have no answer because there is such a broad spectrum of people and opinions
i could understand it being discrimination if they excluded trans people because they dont like them, but thats not what this is. People keep trying to say thats what this is and for some people i guess it is that to be honest, especially in Texas. But the *actual* debate Is not that. The debate comes down to a simple question
"is it discrimination to sacrifice trans peoples inclusivity in sports for the sake of a fair playing field ?", and if its not discrimination it is still arguably morally wrong "arguably" tho, not decidedly. There are plenty of things that are segregated at the cost of other peoples inclusivity for much dumber reasons and no one bats an eye.

Unless they have been taking puberty blockers, since before the differences of boys and girls take place, specifically strength and bone density.... There is a major advantage for transwomen vs cis women. It's no fair to anyone, and as a former athlete I'd be more than midly annoyed... if someone who has a major advantage bumped down my rank.
It's about what's fair. I'm an ally and progressive, and since I went to Kinesiology (the study of human movement) class, I understand there is a major advantage. Bone density stays the same when on estrogen. Being weaker than a cis man, does not make it fair. Still a far stretch.

I'm 5.6 and 132lbs so pretty "normal" for this weight category BUT I know I have a huge advantage in my reach. The point is, all women in my family have the same structure and I got this at birth too. I can literally punch a woman outside my reach without getting hit even if she has the same height and sometimes higher height than me.
This feature isn't my "male structure" from the lack of puberty blockers, but a genetic feat I got from my family who all have the same thing. Heck, my sister has a reach even bigger than mine and broader shoulders.
The point is, biology isn't easy, advantages with bones, muscles, height and all things you can gain by genes (being a gene freak like all the top sport contesters in the world) can deceive and be hard for others to judge cuz we don't have a huge sample to study about it. For haters, my shoulders can be my "male features" but if I show all women in my family they probably will shut up or bring up other excuses like "she's too strong, or fast, or have a huge stamina" you know? i think its just such a tricky debate, both sides of it arent 100% correct - it is true that biologically, male bodies have physical advantages over female bodies in sports like lung capacity, muscle mass etc etc, and so that makes it tricky for trans women competing in female sport categories even if it is their rightful category because people will always complain they have a physical advantage, and some of the time they will be correct. However, not allowing trans people to compete at all is clearly problematic, along with creating a whole new seperate category for trans people because that would be even more alienating and enforcing the idea they arent 'real' men or women.

But when it comes to sports, that field analyzes everyone’s hormones and bodies, it is strictly a physical analysis. And I think for some ppl it is towing the line between being sensitive and affirming to the identity of trans ppl, and also being fair from a purely biological perspective. I do believe if the playing field is even, trans men and women should play in their respective gendered sport, but it does seem like when there is an unfair advantage, people become transphobic, rather than trying to find a fair solution.

Imagine that Usain Bolt identified as a woman (without any physical or hormonal changes) do you really think that he should be able to compete with other women? Obviously not. It would be completely unfair. He would win all the 100m races he participated in by a full second. This is a very interesting debate that I've been contemplating for a while, and seeing this video was an interesting perspective change to the views of most of the people around me, and I appreciated seeing the difference in ideas. However, I disagree with some of your conclusions. I don't think it's fair to label all the people who disagree with biological males who have transitioned into women being allowed in women's sports as transphobic, because oftentimes they're not; transwomen with biologically male bodies do have a steep advantage over biological women, and it really is unfair to the biological women.
Take this theoretical scenario, for example. Let's say in a world where cars are sentient beings, a Lamborghini was built with a really powerful engine, but was uncomfortable with it, and instead believed itself to be more like a Ford Mustang. But it was stuck with the body and engine of a Lamborghini, and the modification process to transform it into a Ford Mustang would take many years. It began its process by reshaping its body to more resemble a Mustang, and took chemicals to modify its engine to operate more like a Mustang as well. A few months into this process, it decided to race in a Mustang racing competition and completely obliterated all of its opponents' top speeds and took the competition by storm, because its engine was still producing a way higher horsepower and RPM output than any of its opponents, allowing it to dominate its other Mustang opponents. Would that be a fair race? It wouldn't, because physically, this Mustang with a mostly-still Lamborghini engine will always be more powerful than a normal Mustang with an original Mustang engine.
This is very similar to the transwomen competing in women's sports debate, because much like the Lamborghini, their bodies are simply more powerful than that of a cis woman, and they always will be, which is why it's unfair to the cis women to allow them to participate in that race. As unfortunate as it may be for the trans athletes, and as transphobic as it may seem, the simple fact of the matter is it would be an injustice.

I don't know if this makes any sense, but I believe that there should be a type of sports (like a group thats just anyone, not a whole new sport) where anyone with any gender orientation can play, the rules might be a bit difficult but it would push people to get better if one person was stronger because at birth they were assigned male but now they identify as a woman, the rules shouldnt change much, right? Just don't aim for certain places on the body because people can get injured and such. Players being attracted to other players on the team might be an issue, but we all got to admit, a basketball player for a popular team could easily be inlove with another person on the team, so it's really not hard to just not seperate sports by gender orientation.

How well a trans person does in sports isn't about gender, it's about ability. If a small child, a teenager, a grown adult, and an old man ran a race that wouldn't be fair. Ability is also why for wrestling matches people are paired up with someone with a similar weight to them. People who are trying to ban trans kids form their gendered teams aren't looking at why trans people might be doing so well and just say it's their gender they were assigned at birth that's giving them an advantage(they are also not looking at title 9 for why they can't ban them). One of the big hurdles this conversation is going to have to address before winning general support is the phenomenon is how, at every single track and field running event, your average observer sees the boys catagory scoring significantly faster times than their female counterparts. And if you see a girl keeping up with the boys, you know she's going to state. This leads to a widespread shared experience where people witness the reason why women's categories exist. Without woman's sports, those girls would have no place on that field.
Now, is this reasoning fair, scientific, or accurate? Hardly. But it is a lived experience shared by anyone who competed or watched high school track and field. And

You're wrong. The first mistake is taking sports as a whole. The advantages, disadvantages, unknowns and variables carry different weight and consequences in different sports at different levels. Sports also isn't plainly gender-based both ways. It's a one way street. On the few occasions that a woman is so great that she looks like she can compete with men, it is immediately discussed whether she should be drafted or allowed to play with the men. It's just that the physical performance differences between men and women are so stark that this rarely comes up. It's interesting that you make fun of cis men for liking sports, because it's from their experience and love of sports that this concern is born, not transphobia. Of course, there are some transphobes in the mix, but chiefly it's about fairness, which is discussed to exhaustion at every level for every situation. That said, cis women came at men so hard for this that many cis men are willing to sit back and watch the destruction of female sports.

And yet the wikipedia page on the matter indicates that there's a lot of underperforming trans athletes... including weight lifting.
In 2021, the IOC approved Laurel Hubbard, a trans woman, to compete in the 2020 Summer Olympics in weightlifting. Hubbard became the first out trans woman to compete at the Olympics; she did not complete her lifts and won no medals.[14] Katelyn Burns, an MSNBC Opinion Columnist, suggested Hubbard's performance demonstrates that transgender athletes do not always win.[15] Hubbard competed with the support of her fellow Olympian competitors. Australian weightlifter Charisma Amoe-Tarrant said "I have so much respect for her and wish her and the other lifters the best and hope we can all come together and enjoy the Olympics, because this Olympics right now is quite different compared to others. I’ve competed with her previously and always had good chats with her, I just wish her well."[16][17]

@@VelaiciaCreator Under performing athletes prove nothing, because you can easily select from men who perform beneath the athletic level of the females in their given weight class. If you've played serious sports with men, you understand this wide breadth of athletic performance. It's the males who perform at the upper ends that threaten female sports, if they were to transition. Again, here we have to be cognizant of the different kinds of sports and corresponding athletic gifts that give advantages here.
The gap between men and women is not universal across all sports, and that gap doesn't provide the same dangers or consequences in degree or kind. These arguments are based on the strawman that all men are superior to all females in sport. There are only two outcomes: for whatever reason, top performing transwomen do not participate in female sports or top performing transwomen replace ciswomen in sports. I'm all for trans rights, full stop. Part of our evolving in this area is to be humble to the fact that when an area has to do with pure biology, we are still figuring things out. "Once they go on therapy, everything is fair," is not a valid platform from which to make an argument. Before you can accurately discuss how the male/female advantage is neutralized, you first have to be able to thoroughly detail where and how it exists across all athletic feats. It may very well be that in gymnastics, things get evened out to allow participation, but in say boxing, they do not. Even holding the position that trans women are women, and trans men are men, there is a lot more room for nuance in this debate than you're applying. You've dismissed all unknowns as, "obviously going to prove your point," instead of acknowledging that it could go the other way in some cases. And you made a pretty dumb point about the doping. Just because it happens more commonly than we'd expect or like, doesn't mean it is, or should be allowed, nor does it mean we shouldn't strive for fairness, even if we never make it there.
So for some nuance, it's worth mentioning that puberty blockers are expensive, and unfortunately not all transgender people have access to them. For trans women that have not had access to hormone therapy until after their puberty years, there are definitely physical differences between them and cis women that could be an advantage in certain sports, mainly centering around the bone structure, oxygen uptake, and the ease of putting on muscle. One of the biggest problems is we don't really have good research on trans athletes in particular at each stage of their transition journey, and certainly not in every sport. Admittedly it is quite difficult with such a small community to reach proper sample sizes. When it comes to team sports, it's probably not a big deal, but when it comes to solo or contact sports it could make enough of a difference for legitimate concerns about fairness. The research on that just isn't in yet.
And yes, the olympic committee rules allows trans women to compete against cis women, but they have rules about testosterone levels in certain events, where people competing in women's sports must have under a certain level of testosterone for a period of at least twelve months prior to the event because it has been proven that a reduction in testosterone causes a decrease in muscle mass and oxygen uptake during that time period. (Which also concerns the intersex community.) Obviously that kind of medical scrutiny is excessive for high-school level competitions, but the existence of those rules demonstrates that the olympic committee does not share your view that trans women are naturally physically similar enough to cis women to compete fairly in all sports. However, trans men can compete against cis men at the olympic level with no additional scrutiny.
As a proposed solution, you're obviously right in that allowing trans people to participate in sports under their identified gender, especially in youth sports, is likely the best for the health of the trans community. Another possible solution is to have a form of "open" category where gender doesn't matter on who is allowed to compete. Such a category would also allow the top tiers of women to try competing against men, and could also allow for mixed teams in various sports. The single biggest point of legitimate concern in my opinion is when it comes to setting records at the highest levels. If it is proven that trans and/or intersex women do have even a slight advantage over cis women, and they set a record time or distance or whatever in an event, that could put a real glass ceiling over cis women. (Which could possibly already be in place based on intersex women competing in women's events in the past.)

So there is a college athlete named Lia Thomas who is transgender and is break records in the swimming field. Now my mom had a talk with one of her friends, surprise in Texas, who wanted to know her opinion. She said that she had no problem with the swimmer competing in their gender identity field. However, Lia had participated in her gender-assigned-at-birth swim competitions which meant she had lots of experience. My mom didn’t have a problem with anything except for the fact that Lia got different exercises and experience by participating in her GAAD(I didn’t want to write it out again) field which means she got to build up muscle differently then her other current opponents. My mom said that the issue wasn’t that Lia was transgender but because male and female sports don’t get the same amount of support and help. Information I have found to see how Lia practices describe it as long and grueling, and mentioned about 3-miles swimming.
    My question is:
Does my mom have a point? Is it also the different levels of sources available for both sides? Men predominantly have more resources than women for the field of their choosing, so is that also a factor in some cases?
Edit:some spelling mistakes I saw, and I wanted to add that I’m asking because, with this video out, I want to know if my mom is not being some form of transphobic or something similar.

I don’t think your mom is being transphobic here. I think it’s an honest discussion or question to have. Certainly male teams sometimes have more resources but not all males train as hard as others so equipment has very little effect on how an individual performs. It comes down to their drive and desire to be better athletes. You could have very poor equipment but practice 8 hours a day 7 days a week and be a better athlete than the kid who just practices for 10 minutes but has a multi-million dollar field. So in that case you mentioned, sure she trained on male teams but she had to have the drive and desire to work harder than anyone else and train longer hours. It’s a good question so thank you for bringing it up.

there's plenty of people who are by luck of the draw just stronger, faster, and all around better at sports than their peers, regardless of gender. Same applies with people who are born weaker, or slower. It shouldn't be a gendered thing, what we really need if you want the most skilled to win, and not the luckiest one (genetically speaking), is some sort of categorization based on physical advantages, not on gender. I know, most sports that use such a system are still full of "cheaters" who change their weight to win in lower classes(like in boxing) or whatever... i'm not saying it is a perfect solution, but it is indeed better than just dividing men and women. Also, by their logic trans men should be allowed to compete in female championships... i don't see how that would work
