    Hey Randal, well thought out lesson. As someone who hates having to change setups for various styles. How much do you think you can get away with playing classical music on a jazz setup by adjusting your sound concept. Every time I try to use a classical setup the sound just feels so small it messes with my head. Cheers, Bruce

    • @randalclarkmusic4333
      @randalclarkmusic4333 11 днів тому

      @@bruceallan3336 it would depend mainly on the mouthpiece design, the baffle type, and the tip opening of the mouthpiece as well as the strength reed that you’re using. Many people play jazz on somewhat closed set ups like a Meyer 5 or the like, and can somewhat get away with playing in a near classical way. However, without a proper classical mouthpiece/Reed set up, it would be very difficult to get a proper tone that would suit blending in a classical section or have the right sound for a soloist. If you are complaining about sounding too small when playing classical, that is most likely due to the fact that you’re reed may be too soft. Using a proper classical mouthpiece set up with a stiffer Reed designed for classical playing like a Rico reserve, or a Vandoren blue box (usually filed/double cut, with a thicker heart) should produce a very open and resonant sound. It should not feel small at all and you’ll be able to maintain a dark core with an even timbre and singing quality to it. On my Classical set up I play a minimum of a 3 1/4 strength. Anything softer will feel bright or small and closed.

    Hi Randal, another great sounding demo! Surprisingly different sound from the these MPs. The Gaia has a lot more pop, like a bright Phil Woods thing. The Brahma has a really full core and is a bit muted in the tops, an interesting sound. I can’t help think in any kind of mix the Gaia would sit better. I have played Theo’s new tenor Brahma and that would seem a little different to the alto version. Cheers matey, Bruce

    With good headphone or full range speakers the sanborn smokes the other two. The other two would need eq to sound their best. That Sanborn is right on. Just give some warm reverb and your gold. Frankly I think the Sanborn is the best sound you've gotten. Next would be the JJ Super Jet. Both are great but the Super Jet rolls off a bit on you. Still great just not that top sparkle the Sanborn gets. I would have liked to hear you on a Durga 8 with Java red 2.5 reeds. The durga 7 is a .080 tip and smaller then you are used to. Was a bit stuffy or could have been nice

      The beechler is a bit in between. The Contemporary has more fatness and body than the belite, more similar to the diamond inlay beechler. But the belite has a little more brilliance and pop than the studio. The studio is the easiest to blow though.

      I’ve really never found it to be a problem since the bell/instrument in general is pushing the sound away from you. However, if you’re playing in a small room or in a close space with reflective surfaces, maybe that could be a concern. I often play with noise canceling headphones with a track in my ears, or with musicians earplugs that reduce the sound of decibels equally across the range. But I know what you mean.

    Hey brother do you think the Durga can be an all around piece. Can you do straight ahead without sounding too aversive and bright? I know for contemporary is great but I don’t know if it would pass as a straight ahead jazz piece without causing stress. Hahahaha

    • @randalclarkmusic4333
      @randalclarkmusic4333 Місяць тому

      I would think generally not. It does depend a little little bit on the particular player. For example, I can sound fairly passable on it for straight ahead, but it doesn’t really want to sit in that genre, so I’d be thinking too much about it all the time. The Gaia or the new Brahma. Would fit into that genre much more easily. The Jody Jazz DV is a much more versatile mouthpiece that can sort of spread out into those adjacent areas much better

    Silverstein ligatures are some of the best on the market by far but they come at a hefty premium as well.. regardless, in a side by side comparison, you can definitely tell that the Silversteins allow your sound more of those overtones and what not. However, like you mentioned, a listener is not gonna be able to tell on any given day what ligature you are using. I have the Cryo and I love how much it opens up the sound on my soprano. My sound is definitely bigger and more vivid. It feels easier to play as well, with lesser effort than say my optimum ligature. So it is definitely true that this ligature makes a difference to the player :)

    What are your thoughts on the Super Jet vs the Beechler? I’ve played a Bellite Custom 6 for almost 20 years and love it but wanted to try something new. I just picked up a Super Jet to try out. I like the Vandoren Jumbo Java but it was maybe a little stuffy in the mids and a tad buzzy. I’m sure it’s more based on its relationship with my horn than the actual MP (Buffet Expression Alto; naturally lends itself darker) I also picked up a dark piece in the HR* Custom Dark to try something completely different and it’s pretty amazing, unique tone and can push it pretty good when you kindly ask it to 😀 Great video! The Beechler and the super jet are not really very comparable because the Beechler just has a slight rollover baffle while the super jet has a high step baffle. They are really two different beasts altogether. Superjet is going to be a much more aggressive sound. But if you’re going for that more Sanborn/Nelson Rangell-ish kind of sound., the super jet will not disappoint. One thing I like about the superjet is even though it’s more aggressive it keeps a very nice Rich core. If you’re trying to find something that sounds similar to the Beechler, but will give you some more ease of playing and perhaps a little bit more cut I would recommend the Eric Marienthal retro revival.

      All of them were very free blowing. The Durga was the easiest especially the HR although I thought the SuperJet had a little more of a rich core to it, and I really like my sound on it. The Drake was the most “Sanborn” of them all and played great too. All winners.

    They are all nice sounding mp‘s. Except of the Drake i tested them all in a personal shootout at Thomann. I decided to buy the Mindi Abair II. For me this mp was the most versatile one. Nice Video - Thank you

      Legere 2.25 signature. I think it was a 2.5 on the super Jet
