I hadn’t been to see the outdoor drama since I was young. This past Summer I took my husband who had never been. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you doing it again this Summer. You will not regret it! We loved it. I would love to see you go and make a video. ❤
They had that type of waterslide in the 80s in Pigeon Forge. You would use a mat to slide down, but if you lost your mat it was like sliding down a cheese grater.
I went down that slide in Pigeon Forge in the 80's. The mat slid out from underneath me and I ended up looking like raw hamburger by the time I got to the bottom. Never again.
Remember that time when adam the woo called himself a complete idiot right before he rode his bicycle which was not the right type for extreme sports down a slide in California and warped his front wheel and flipped over his handle bars and ate shit (not literally eating poop, but it's a term we use in the BMX and skatebording community meaning having a bicycle or skateboard accident)?
Funny, back in the 1970’s we rode on mats down cement slides and called it fun.. Wet Willie’s water slide. Still have scars from the split second your toes slid off the mat.. it was fun…😂
It looks like an old Wet Willies water slide. We had two in the St. Louis, MO. area from about 1978 to 82. I think the ruins of the one in Valley Park, MO., might still be there.
I’d say it was probably 97-98 when I visited there with my aunt and uncle. There is a picture of myself with a gentleman in Cherokee dress. I believe it was the same place, but I remember a long rope style swinging bridge that went across a river. If memory serves me right there was a gift shop across the river where the bride led towards. Edit: At 46:46 that is the place mentioned above. What a great memory you just restored for me.
I believe the abandoned water slide you were in was a tube slide. Noah's Ark at the Wisconsin Dells used to have three tube slides that had concrete built into the ground, just like what you're showing here. If I remember correctly, the tubes were made of very strong, very hard rubber. It was a bit dangerous but fun to slide down.
My family and I used to go to Sky Valley Georgia every year for vacation. We would always drive through Cherokee village and stop. My dad died last year so seeing it brought back a lot of good memories and made me tear up. Thanks Jacob
Thoroughly enjoyed seeing the small town attractions past and present. A nice change from the glitz and tackiness of the contemporary offerings. Thank you!
Interesting video. Although the chicken dance machine story was disturbing. So are the bear pits. I saw a bear at a county fair outside of Savannah GA around 2000. It was in a trailer with a metal collar and chain. Very disturbing…I’m happy most these stupid animal abuse “attractions” have finally had their day. Still more need to go.
We get elk in our yard up the hill at Maggie Valley....we LOVE seeing them. They seem safe, as long as you don't get too close to them I am sure. I haven't noticed them doing any damage, apart from an occasional munched rose bush. I have never heard of them killing animals, as they are really docile. I don't want to judge, but I would think they wouldn't attack a dog, unless it was attacking them.
Love this video ! Sad to see what happened in Maggie valley but seeing you explore the abandoned water slide and seeing those awesome elk was truly amazing! Thanks for another great video !
I loveeeeeeeee Maggie Valley and Popcorn Sutton and Ive never even seen the sign with Popcorn on it. Thank You for Showing this and also very sad about both events that happened in Maggie Valley
I went on that chairlift in Cherokee in the summer of 2002. I think it was right before it closed. I had no idea how rickety it probably was! BTW, this is my favorite style of video on your channel.
Your travels through Maggie Valley brought back a lot of happy memories for me. My mother was born in Forest City, so in the summer, we would pick up her mom and sister and go up the mountain for picnics. When my husband and I had children, we continued the tradition. It's a beautiful part of the state. Thank you for sharing it.
Definitely lot of memories and pictures in that area, most of those places… 💞 Visited so many times, as a kid, to when I had my own kids. That area used to be thriving, and all of those attractions were packed, even some that have no remnants, like Frontier Land.. also there was a place in Pigeon Forge called Porpoise Island 🐬 🏝️ that had a TV show filmed there… 😊
We were in Cherokee in July last year and the Pink Motel was closed then. I am 60 now and my Grandmother used to stay there a lot when her and her friend would visit. That’s how old it is, at least 65 or 70
I love your sense of exploration. A few years ago, I'd be right there with you. At 65, when you saw the cement slide I knew exactly what it was. In the early days of water slides, some genius thought, it would be OK to make a slide out of cement, as long as they coated it with real slick coat of paint. I remember, as an older teen, there was a place in Douglas, GA. called Holiday Beach. It was a lake with water skiing, some water slides, a big game room, beach area, etc. They had 2 odd water slides. The first one you climb up to the top, get on a hard plastic sled, they loaded into a tilt and launch type thing. You set up right, but held onto the bars on the inside side of the sled. Then they tilted you. The slide was ALL metal rollers like you'd find at a loading dock or something. So you FLEW down that ramp on rollers to a large pool at the bottom. I felt like I was going 60 when I hit the pool and hydroplaned all the way to the opposite side of the pool. Fun, but terrifying at the same time. The second slide....was my first.....and LAST cement water slide. I don't remember if they even gave us a soft cushy mat or not. If they did, I lost mine almost immediately. Yes, there was water going down the slide, and yes it was slick. But the cement was very rough and not smoothed out very well. It scarped my back from one end to the other. I wasn't hospital grade hurt, but that ended my slides for the day, and even though I saw more cement slides over the years, I never got on another one. See, I helped pave the way for adventurous guys like you, so you would grow up with fiberglass water slides. Your welcome!
What you saw was a water slide, I think. Near my house in the 80s we had a CONCRETE water slide. The "life guard" would stand at the bottom with a bottle of Bactine to spray on your cuts. LOL I live about an hour from Maggie Valley.
Thank You for showing the places " close to home" 💝 My son lives in Sylva and His partner owns a tattoo shop, Mystic Ink Tattoos, in Maggie Valley and I haven't had the opportunity to go visit Them and see what They see all of the time but I get a chance to have a glimpse through Your videos and I really appreciate that Jacob 🌟✨💖😻
Back-to-back neighboring fires seem fishy to me. I enjoyed the day of lost roadside relics. Wish we could have looked through some windows. Congrats on your wrestling career.
That's a damn shame about the Stomping Grounds, but I'm glad they caught the lousy little (Explicitive Deleted) that did it. Hope they throw the book at him.
Most often when you see fiberglass statues they were part of a charity auction. Here in Michigan we had frogs. Grosse Point had a huge auction and raised lots of money for the children's hospital in Detroit.
The final scene from Stroszek is on YT. It is a very funny absurdist dark comedy made for a European sensibility, but I enjoyed it. Kudos for knowing the connection!
PLEASE PUT THAT SWEET LIL POSSUM BACK ON YOUR INTRO THEY ARE PRECIOUS AND DONT HAVE A VERY LONG LIFE THANK YOU FOR YOUR WONDERFUL VIDEOS . BEEN A SUBSCRIBER SINCE YOU USED TO GO IN ABANDED HOUSES LOVE THAT TO. WATCHING FROM TENNESSEE
When I lived in Vegas and we drove to Arizona to get lotto tickets...when passing thru Boulder City before the Hover Dam, there would sometimes be a large herd of Big Horn Sheep off the side of the road in town down by the wash and eating grass...would always cause a massive traffic jam of people looking
That is sad about the Stompin Ground. Hopefully they can rebuild by the busy season. I remember the last village you showed in Cherokee, the one past the bridge, that is 2005 on a trip through we went to a wolf zoo. What we entered was a bunch if wolves locked in cages in the basement of that big building. Crazy how times have changed.
I have a baby cockatiel and she/he has been listening to you intro since 3.5 weeks old! If she/he is going to learn any song it will be your intro lol I love your intro so much and just recently learned your brother made it makes it so much more special!! Love you Jacob ❤
Adventure Bound camping resort in Gatlinburg (really Cosby) currently has an operational concert water slide down the side of the mountain. The water if freezing cold in the summer but it’s an absolute blast!
I've never been to the USA but seeing that vlog really tugged at my heart. So sad to see all those places closed down and just empty shells now. The native Indians, proud people, that once frequented those areas gone. Happy memories remain I'm sure for some........
a long time ago, waterslides were made of concrete, mats were provided to slide on. but if you lost your mat.... ooooo that concrete be rough! And we did have to walk up every time, a 15 or 30 minute block of time could be purchased, best time ever!
Thanks, Jacob. I love that area of our state. I need to head back up to that area. So much has changed since I'd go up there in the 70's and early 80's
Hey Jacob, love you're videos I try to watch everyone of them I can. Loved your video today I love Cherokee. We were just there a few months back in that same area you were just in. My family and I was wondering about that chairlift. We wasn't sure what it was. Thanks for the education. Your the best.
You just went down memory lane for me. Every year as a kid we would stay a couple days in Cherokee. Go to the zoo that used to be there, ghost town, and santaland. Hate to see all those stores closed down. Still drive through going to Gatlinburg/ pigeon forge just to relive some of those childhood memories
Definitely an old water slide. Had one in Galveston back in the late 70s. Concrete and you had to use a rubber pad to slide on. If you didn't come out bloodied up you didn't have a good time!
I remember riding that slide when I was 8 or 9 a whole lot of years ago. These type of slides were popular in early- mid 80s when safety wasn’t a “thing.”
Morning Jacob 🤓📸 sorry to hear about this on Stopin' Ground you can see in the video were the fire 🔥 started and the black area. So sad indeed. Thanks for sharing this with us. Stay safe my friend. That Lemo looks like they had to get it out of the building it was starting to burn as well.
When I originally read about this on social media, I thought it was a joke. It seemed so inconceivable that someone set it on fire in broad daylight and according to the story I read he went back to throw more wood on the fire.
It looks sad to see these old attractions abandoned. I would have taken a picture with Popcorn Sutton. I live in CA but saw a really cool video about him- he reminds me of my hillbilly roots from West VA!
Hello Jacob! Just thought you might like to know that anyone can fly a drone without a license, as long as the drone weighs 0.55 pounds or less, I looked it up on Google, other UA-camrs use them all the time, you should be able to do the same, if you still desire to do such, Adam and Justin both use one on occasion.
11:28 whenever you make your way back to western Kentucky I don’t know if the remenats are still there but in Gilbertsville outside of Calvert city along the lake there was a water park with the same kind of water slides, it was called world of water I think it was just down the road from Maggie’s Jungle Golf.
Hey Jacob! If you’re having some trouble driving westward, there are a few places just east of Waynesville that are very close that I don’t think you’ve been to. Check out the counties of Cleveland and Gaston. In Cleveland County, there’s the Earl Scruggs (legendary bluegrass musician) Museum in uptown Shelby, as well as Kings Mountain National Military Park (revolutionary war battleground). In Gaston, there’s the Schiele Museum of Natural History in Gastonia, the Gaston County Museum in Dallas, Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden in Belmont, and Crowders Mountain State Park. There are also a few festivals and events in those counties you haven’t been to. Firebugs don't really need a motive, they just love to watch things burn. I Also find it hard to believe the fires are not connected given the time-line, I think the Police stopped an arsonist from burning down the town.
Excellent video Jacob, please do more videos like this. We love exploring with you!
Love the old nostalgia visits, your old town tours, keep them up
OG Carpetbagger, tromping through the woods and abandoned buildings. 👍
Keep on making videos like this I think we all love those.
These videos are interesting 😊
I like these videos. Like your older videos. Love road site attractions and the old timey stuff
I like these kinds of videos with you just exploring random places
I agree with everyone else, love these Carpetbagger exploring videos ❤
I hadn’t been to see the outdoor drama since I was young. This past Summer I took my husband who had never been. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you doing it again this Summer. You will not regret it! We loved it. I would love to see you go and make a video. ❤

I remember those mats
Water Boggan
I agree they are water slides, this looks like a racing type slide. three slides side by side
I went down that slide in Pigeon Forge in the 80's. The mat slid out from underneath me and I ended up looking like raw hamburger by the time I got to the bottom. Never again.
Ouch! 😂
😅😅😅You made me nervous on the slide

Love that you gave us a good view of the elk and the Smokey Mountains.
That was my favorite 😍 part
Great to see you out roughing it! And yes, back in my day the water slides were made of concrete not fiberglass!
Excellent video, Jacob. You always find very interesting places, loved this one. Till the next one, take care, my friend, and as always safe travels.
Funny, back in the 1970’s we rode on mats down cement slides and called it fun.. Wet Willie’s water slide. Still have scars from the split second your toes slid off the mat.. it was fun…😂

Thank you reminds me of your early videos. Which we love. Thank you Carpet Bagger hopefully Maggie valley can move forward after that damage

Sending love and healing energy for a quick recovery from your procedure.❤
Awesome video I love watching abandoned videos

GO CATS!! My son graduated WCU, my daughter got her Undergraduate there, and is still there getting her Masters. We wear lots of purple and gold here!
Carpetbagger you are not gonna fight Gargantua. Do not even think about it. We like you all in one piece!
Great tour, old and still hanging in there in Maggie Valley. Too bad about the two fires, sad. Bear Pits have to close.
Interesting video. Although the chicken dance machine story was disturbing. So are the bear pits. I saw a bear at a county fair outside of Savannah GA around 2000. Another great video, Jacob. Thank you!
All you need is Adam the woo and a bicycle for that sweet slide lol 😀
That was unreal. I shouldn't have, but it made me laugh. I explained to my wife, it's just the kinda stuff guys do.😂
😂

Sorry to hear about that. I stayed at the Travelowes Motel next door recently (on the other side from the hotel that burned).
Your best video in a long time. I love learning the history and pop culture of North Carolina.
Strotszek is one of my favorite films, amazing to see a glimpse of what remains of that attraction.
Back-to-back neighboring fires seem fishy to me. I enjoyed the day of lost roadside relics. Wish we could have looked through some windows. Congrats on your wrestling career.
Those elk were AMAZING ❤ i cant believe how huge they actually are. !!!🦌🦌🦌🦌
Looking at the "water slide" and I'm getting Action Park before Action Park-vibes. Concert slides sounds super old school.
Such an interesting area. I really want to travel that way
I love watching the Carpetbagger whenever I'm having dessert. Hope you enjoy, Jacob!

Actually, yes, Maggie Valley is a notorious moon shining area
Seing you into the wild makes me anxious 😂 am i getting old 🙂
I saw elks in Cherokee at that rest stop
I don’t know the history of it, but it definitely looks like a concrete waterslide. Something I would never be on.😂
Those bear statues are beautiful!
Jar of 🌽! Thanks for the outdoor adventure.
Waterslide! Those were so fun!!
When I originally read about this on social media, I thought it was a joke. It seemed so inconceivable that someone set it on fire in broad daylight and according to the story I read he went back to throw more wood on the fire.
"Decroded" is a perfectly cromulent word.
It looks sad to see these old attractions abandoned. I would have taken a picture with Popcorn Sutton. I live in CA but saw a really cool video about him- he reminds me of my hillbilly roots from West VA!
Please be careful 🥺🎉

I miss the old school Cherokee. Visited several times between 1985-1995 and then in the 2000's it started changing same with Gatlinburg.
Make whatever videos work for you. Local or home videos. I'm here for the ride.
😊same!!!
When you said, "decroded", I immediately thought of Napoleon Dynamite saying, "decroded piece of crap" and burst out laughing.
I know you love your crocs but during the winter, you really shoud wear a good pair of hiking boots.
11:28 whenever you make your way back to western Kentucky I don’t know if the remenats are still there but in Gilbertsville outside of Calvert city along the lake there was a water park with the same kind of water slides, it was called world of water I think it was just down the road from Maggie’s Jungle Golf.
Some people have no regard for others property. Very sad.

Trillion dollars for satellites to study smoke...no money for fire victims.
Popcorn Sutton is mentioned on the series Moonshiners alot
I was there over the weekend!
i loved this video thanks CB
I remember the old gem mine wow can't believe it's gone
Firebugs don't really need a motive, they just love to watch things burn. I Also find it hard to believe the fires are not connected given the time-line, I think the Police stopped an arsonist from burning down the town.
