Lovely and very touching video of the fires and smoke sky’s. My thoughts go out to those families that have lost everything, so followers of Free Range Sailing help out and donate what you can . Let’s not forget about the animals that also require help. A sad time for Australia at the moment. 😢🏴
We were in Colombia during the bush fires and even indigenous people out in the far south on the Amazon, when they found out we were from Australia were offering their sympathies and concern for our country. It was humbling. At that time the fire from the bush fires was circling the globe.
It weights the heart when you are not even close to the fires, and yet it still touch your life. The sight brings back memories of of mountain fires that take on a life and personality of their own... seen and felt hundreds and thousands of miles away. (In most cases, can show us how small we really are) The careless action of one so small, is still capable of such devastation. Stay safe. My thoughts of our Earth, is that one day we may save it, from ourselves. Peace!
While my country (Canada) has gone through a couple of bad fire years. It is nothing like yours or anywhere near the wild life lose. Our thought were/are with you.
Love to follow you two. I lived aboard in the Pacific Northwest of America for 8 years. I spent a year sailing from Port Townsend to Alaska and back. I made it my goal to live off of whatever I could find. I used a great book called”Incredible Edibles”. Not sure if it’s still in print. Got to say, I loved most of the things I found, and some I filed in the “ Been there done that” file. Some of my greatest memories. I have an amazing wife, and two young boys now. Working on getting myself set up so that we can take off again, but this time it’s westward bound until we we ca say, “ I think we’ve been here before!” . Keep it up! Maybe we’ll meet up over way too many beers some day.
I've seen red rain but not black. When I lived in the NT in bulldust country it rained red from the dust taken up by the storms. Even more intriguing was watching the rain drops hitting the ground splashing dust into the air. I think the only thing predictable about our weather and the effect it has on us is its unpredictability. When Tennant Creek in the NT built their dam just north of the town it was predicted to take three years to fill it but it three quarter filled in one night much to the horror of the contractors who still had a heap of machinery on its bed. I lived through cyclone Tracy which left Darwin looking like a war zone. 1974 was a bad year because I also experienced the Brisbane floods that inundated huge portions of the city. What is normal and how reckless do you need to be to assign a cause for what's certainly been happening throughout my life.
'Normal' weather is the exception if my life at sea is any indicator. I can remember the last 5 years quite clearly and the weather activity was dramatically different each year. I do know I'm glad not to be a forecaster!
Another wonderful episode. Pascale, you have the most wonderful feel of, and sensitivity to, music to capture or reinforce the mood of every moment. It is a gift that cannot be learned, and has never before been found in a lawyer.
I bought my first sailboat during the California wildfires and sailed it from Vallejo to Alameda with skies like this over SF Bay. It was a very interesting introduction to sailing and will definitely stick in my memory
Here in the Northern Hemisphere it is still the end of winter, 27 degrees F and last time I checked an inch of new snow. I live in the Central Oregon Cascades and summer wildfires are a part of the lifestyle here just as it is when you live in the bush in Australia, To keep my home fire safe I work hard at keeping fuels away from the house and maintain a "fire free" areas around the house. so much of the area burning this season are places we visited a few years ago. The smoke can make life very hard when you work in the out of doors, The last big fire season I had to ware a face mask often to keep the smoke from burning my lungs. Not the heat but the smoke was so irritating, My prayers to all adversely affected by this seasons wildfires,.
yep. Eerie is the right word for it. Sky seemed worse down Nowra way than here in southern Sydney around that time. Actually it looked even worse than the Melbourne fires did in 2007 (I was down there then) and even the 1994 ones here in the Shire. Kinda get used to it though; like playing backyard cricket at Christmas it's part of Aussie life I guess.
In the area of "Life On The Hulls" UA-cam channel home turf. Glad that this burn is over and that we can prepare for the next one with more knowledge on how to protect property and wildlife from wild brush fires. As always fair winds and good wishes from the freezing north 🌬⛵️
We too are thankful for all the rain that has fallen since we filmed this video just before Christmas. Our thoughts go to all the people and critters who lost their homes during this tragic time.
We’ve all been thinking of good friends in Aus. The news has been horrendous for so many of our mates. As usual, your narrative has been compelling, human, empathic ... the scenes and the music in harmony while nature rages. Thank you! 😔 Enjoy Tassie, guys. I was last there in 77, competing in the Sydney-Hobart. We came 9th in a fleet of more than160, half of whom retired after a Southerly Buster struck the fleet just as we entered Bass Strait. New Year’s Eve in Hobart was awesome. I can still feel the headache .... 🤪
Yeah it was a Christmas to remember bush fires at my back fence. The storm is a Pyro-Storm made by the bush fire smoke. Great video, & don't forget your sponge :-)
Words cannot express how much this video meant to me, representing those moments of ... breathlessness ... 4pm and the feel of apocalypse dawning. I am so glad you are here, able to watch and reply, and made it through the last few months.
Jervice Bay is one of largest breeding grounds for sharks, I've dived there many years ago at a place called Vincentia and the number of sharks there at the time was unbelievable and a great experience
Great vid. That change in wind bought through a southerly that saved my house! 300m from my house the fire turned. Scary stuff when the flames rage 100m in the air in a fire storm.
We get skys like your opening when our forests burn in Calif. We have days when it is recomended that we just stay indoors. Our thoughtsvand prayers arevwith you.
Great video guys. Black rain? Just sad that there must be so much other misfortune in those darkened tears from the sky. Sail Safe guys. Ant, Cid and the pooch crew.
@@FreeRangeLiving Wow Thank You! It never occurred to me that my pedal steel playing with Ralegh would find it's way to the Southern Ocean. Your video really gets across the terrinble scale of those bush fires.
Eerie orange sky. Crazy looking. And even more carbon in the atmosphere. I hope they can find ways to control fires like this. I feel for the residents. Good video. Raised awareness for me!
The choice of music really adds a powerful facet to the mood of this video. My wife and I have had the experience of having to evacuate from our home in the face of a large forest fire that was seeding fires from burning embers falling one or two kilometres downwind of the main blaze. I imagine this might have been a similar concern for you if the fire continued to advance, especially if the winds had picked up in your direction. You both keep your cool though, and carry on fishing and fixing gear. Brilliant!
Your channel is so interesting to watch, being from the USA and never having been to Australia it's exciting to follow your adventures, thanks so much for sharing. Pascale really makes the videos easy to watch too, so beautiful..... God Bless you both!
that weather seemed more surreal and intense than what you experienced in Sydney harbor last episode! Hope (that the both of you) didn't experience any negative health effects from the smoke
Excellent as usual!!! One of my friends from when I lived in Australia (1971-72) texted me from Camden during the worst of the fires. She was saying how bad it was. I asked if that could go down to the coast to get away from the smoke but the roads were closed, and from your video it would have not done much good...
Another great vid. I feel for the folks effected by the fires. I live in SoCal and have lived through several major fires when I live in the mountains. In fact after one fire threatened my home I moved and a year and a half later that home was turned to ash. Stay safe both of you and we will be waiting for your next wonderful vid.
It’s wasn’t a good experience Guys I’ll tell you that . Living in Alpine Victoria was Really scary. I got out in time . And because my Boat was in Lake entrance near , Mallacoota I could t get down to it either . Wasn’t a Good Christmas tbh . But it did make me think about my choice of place to live ? My days of living in the bush are over , the House is for sale . I’ll happily go onto a sailboat Now .

Came to the conclusion I ain’t doing it anymore. Stressing out over several weeks or months of the year of whether you’ll have a house at the end of it ? So I’ve been lucky that hasn’t happened , unlike some many others . I think I’ll take my luck on to the sea . Lol

We, the lucky ones, who weren't anywhere near the fires, wish those who were affected by the fires better fortune in the future.
In Portugal we know about fires too, unfortunately. My thoughts and support to all of you. Safe sailing. Another great video.
