In Finland🇫🇮 we were always jealous of our neighbors in Sweden🇸🇪 in 1970's and early 80's. Abba and their fantastic lead singer Agneta. In Nightwish our moment had finally come. All the guys were masters of their instruments. Tuomas the creative genius, Tarja was the best singer of 90's up to 2005. A voice like Tarja's is extremely rare, born on Earth just once in a century 💯

Tarja + Nightwish = something really original and fresh by that time. Tarja's voice is so dark, deep, heavy and bright and Tuomas' lyrics by then made it amazingly to listen. You should check out their older albums like "oceanborn" or "wishmaster". With tarja they used to be a power metal band...really powerful and fast. Then they changed to something more mainstream. I suggest sacrament of wilderness or the pharao sails to orion :)

However, Tuomas makes this perfect. There are hundreds of singers like Tarja but not many composers like Tuomas.

I love Floor but you can really tell Tuomas uniquely composed the older songs for Tarja's range. There are a few songs Floor sings that I truly enjoy while others I see her singing because they can't simply discard the older repertoire or fans would flip.
Floor's voice is more rock than classical and this song truly requires a classical dark mezzo approach
This song has a special place in my heart. It was my introduction to Nightwish back in 1999. Glad you liked it. 🙂

I am a week late to this reaction... Damn onion ninjas! knowing this was Tarja's last night with Nightwish, the look on Marko's face when he glanced at Tuomas (I think), looking like "Can we play this song after tonight?"... And now... Marko's resignation. DAMN! This, for me, is a Tarja song, though Floor is phenomenal as well, But I am an old fan of Nightwish, so, yeah! Marko needs to look after himself now, he owes us nothing after the many years of great music he put forth, I owe him my love, respect, best wishes and much thanks!
This song is about the magical moment of the total solar eclipse in Europe in 1999.

They are all true Queens. Tarja is closest to my heart, because she was the first singer when I got to Nightwish, and I have the deepest emotional connection to her era, but all three ladies are wonderful and deserves nothing but love.
I hate when people argue about wich Nightwish lead singer is the best. There is no “best”. They are all just different. I love them all. i got into Nightwish about a year ago, so Floor is the closest to my heart but I love Anettes sound too. The live stuff from her may not be the best but I mean even she is a part of Nightwish’s history. I, of course, also truly adore Tarja‘s sound. I mean how could you not? Nighwish lies deep in my heart. And I don‘t know how many people share this opinion but Nightwish wasn‘t really the same for me since Marko left, so I understand where you are coming from. I know it‘s hard and I‘ve been very down, the first months, that I had that Information. So the massage here: Let‘s just all be a family and at least appreciate all of the singers talent!

The fact that they wrote this in a serious time-crunch just makes it even better.
She didn't know she was getting fired but she had threatened to leave for a solo career so many times that the rest of the band was tired of it. They basically agree it was time for her to leave. She had already told them "End of an Era" was her last album with the band. So she was fired before she quit. The funny thing is Tarja and Floor are good friends still today.
the things you wrote are basically all bunch of mixed lies , yes she told them she would leave after thew have done another album so after 2 years , she told she would leave because bandmates were never talking with each other anymore and leave someone you were friends for like 15 years with an open letter is quite untasteful
There was another side of this story told by Tarja's fiance in a publication (cant remember which one) but from what I remember his side of the story went something like this...
Tarja for many years had been interested in having a shot at a solo career, and she had been straight up with the band (as you would expect a decent band member would) and had told them of these ambitions, and that she eventually wanted to go solo in a couple of years time.
Thuomas was quite infatuated with Tarja and had been for many years (probably since they started the band), and she did not feel the same way about him. I expect some part of him hoped that would one day change. In fact a number of his songs (e.g. Ghost Love Score) were apparently inspired by his love for Tarja. After Tarja got engaged (her iance was also her agent) Tuomas didn't want to accept that it was not to be and apparently had trouble letting go of Tarja, which made things quite awkward and uncomfortable for both Tarja and her fiance.
Tarja also apparently raised concerns with the band about traveling on the bus, that they didnt reach their destinations with enough spare time for her to be able to practice her vocal excercises, so the band told her "just catch a plane then" - so she said ok and started to fly with her fiance and meet the band there rather then traveling with them on the bus,.
Now, the bands argument was they felt Tarja was becoming distant from the band and that she was putting her fiance before them, and I think they mentioned in particular that she wasnt evne travelling with the band anymore, that she wanted to leave and do her own thing, etc.
Based on what her fiance said that was all technically true, however the story as told by her fiance gave a very different angle on it. She had a good reason for wanting to travel seperartel, she had a good reason for beocming distant from the band (the awkwardness with Tuomas) and her interest in a solo career was something had been totally up front with them about and didnt plan to pursue for at least another year or two.
Personally,. I am of the impression that the firing was just Tuomas acting on his emotions, not being able to handle the fact that Tarja was distancing herself from him. It's obvious from his writings that he is a very emotional person, so it's not hard to imagine. Also probably explains why he felt so conflicted at the time and was in so much pain, as he probably blamed himself somewhat for what happened.
I saw an interview with her after she found out about the firing and she was absolutely distraut in tears and seemed genuinely and deeply heatbroken, which doesn't seem to lineup with their claims that she just didnt care about the band anymore. It seemed clear that she cared about the band and felt deeply betrayed by what happened.
Regardless of who's story is true, firing somebody publically the way they did is incredibly immature and unprofessional, and it seems hard to assume Tarja was the problem because they did the EXACT SAME THING to Annette only a few years later. Annette wanted to postpone a tour because she was pregnant - seems a reasonable enough reason. She told them she was happy for them to bring in a temporary replacement singer to fill in for her AS LONG AS it wasn't Floor (as she knew that if Floor took over she wolud never get her job back) . They weren't happy with that so they sacked her...in a very public and most humiliating way.
Oh my this was one of the first songs I've heard from Nightwish. For me it's a Tarja-Song because of all these memories, which doesn't mean Floor didn't nail it. I guess it's a normal reaction to prefer specific songs from one of the 3 singers. I love them all and I think it's great that everyone can pick the version you like the most.
They have so many beautiful ballads. Some of my favourites are "Walking in the air" , "Eva" and of course "The islander" with Marco!
A must-see with Tarja is "Phantom of the opera" from the same show!

You can totally see from the audience reactions during this concert why the band parting ways with Tarja was a VERY big deal. She was freaking loved to the point where the behind the scenes frictions were both understandable and tragic... I can fully understand the temptation of a solo career for Tarja and at the same time as an ex band member I can see how the internal ego issues were almost destined to go out of control. That a band first decision was made is in my opinion the best outcome however painful. That being said, the reaction was a blast and I do look forward to your experience with 'High Hopes'! This old fart will shut his yap now but you guys rock. Thanks and peace...

Beautiful, love the reaction. Both Tarja's version here is amazing, Floor's version is amazing. And both are just different enough and are their own. Marvelous to have versions from both of these awesome ladies and singers to enjoy.
This is exactly how I feel. I can't understand how grown up people can be so childish, and fight for such a stupid thing. All of these three ladies deserves nothing but love, and if one doesn't like some of them, or one of the versions, just skip it for Christ sake. No need to feed the bad blood among fandom. Every fan from every era should have equal rights to enjoy their favorite versions without getting bashed, or reading understating comments about their favorite singer. We all should be adults, right?

This is one of the songs she does best. It gives me goosebumps every single time.
The best live performance of this awesome melody and Nightwish classic. Sad that the era ended and now we heard that Marco leaves the band. Jukka is not more active with drums too. This is one of the absolutely best NW concerts ever and certainly the most deep feelings.
Calling that solo "Sexy" is just perfect! got goosebumps at that moment!

Heeeeey, my dudes! :) So great to see you two, I laughed my ass off at the end there, such a great duo. :) But on a serious note, this song was the one that got me hooked on Nightwish. I was at university at that time, and at our student´s home someone played this out loud. I was trying to find this song for like 3 weeks on the internet, but finally I got it, and that was my entrance into the Nightwish rabbit hole, where I´ve been until this very day. :)

Love this. This is a teary one for me... gets me every single time. Its one of a couple that I prefer Tarja singing over Floor. Not that Floor doesn't do a magical job with it, don't get me wrong... but this is all Tarja, all day long.

Sleeping Sun, a classic from Oceanborn, masterpiece of an album! Thomas, I don't know if you already did I Wish I Had An Angel, guess not, you have to do a reaction to that song from this same concert, the very last Tarja song with Nightwish. It is so interesting to see the sadness on their faces when the songs ends and as they greet the crowd cause they know that's it, the end, unknown future is ahead and this magic is done, while Tarja is happy cause for her is the end of just another great concert, she has no idea what's coming just minutes after this, this is such an amazing thing to see

This was the last show of the "Once" tour ! She told the boys before that she will only record the new album but not tour again with them . So she normaly knows it was her last concert together ;-)
The song "I wish I had an Angel" has also deeper meaning. Angel was Tarja's pseudonyme in the band. And that's why you see the angel images everywhere, and in the lyrics. For example "Once" album cover has a weeping angel with the word "Once" in the pillar front of her. Thus foretelling Tarja's time is over. And "End of an Era" album cover has angel and devil facing opposite directions, with breaking heart between them. And Tuomas's pseudonymes were Devil and Beast.

Tarja is my favorite of the three Nightwish singers (though I like all of them), and this concert is hard to watch. But at least she's actually had a pretty good career post-Nightwish.

Great reaction. I didn't know Tarja was released from the band after this particular concert fittingly dubbed End of An Era. Although she had expressed her desire to leave the band I'm sure she must've felt devasted that her exit was gonna be made right after this very concert through an open letter from Tuomas Holopainen and the band handed to her afterwards.
Tarja was the band's best vocalist in my opinion. Some would argue that Anette Olzon, her replacement was better, or even Floor Jansen. I just love Tarja's rich tone and gorgeous vibrato. Sleeping Sun was the band's fourth single. It was released August 2,1999 to coincide with the total solar eclipse that would occur on August 11th of that same year, but I gather you knew that already.
Interestingly, Tarja had concerns about recording Sleeping Sun because it required a different kind of breathing technique which she hadn't learned, and she didn't feel comfortable hitting the low notes in the song being a coloratura soprano and not a lyric soprano. Then she couldn't sing it in an operatic voice but a rock voice which she feared would ruin her vocal chords. But after much hard work and practice she learned how to apply both styles in her singing.

Also for some songs I would advise you to actually listen to both version live of the songs like "Dead Boys Poem" is amazing with tarja and incredible with floor but the song sound so different

You can do them back to back, as long as you just give both singers credit. No problem! They both bring something different to the songs and also there is an age gap; recordings that are over 15 years old don’t sound as great as ones that are 5 years old due to better technology.

This song was from before they became the metal band we know. Metal was not the original direction for the band. It became it after they met Tarja again and heard how powerful a singer she had become.

I know most people know this as a Tarja song. But, I know the Floor version. And It is my ABSOLUTE favorite song! Nothing against her. She has a beautiful voice. @@ThomFoolery1 Scotch is always my choice. I haven't tried that one but I have tasted Balvenie Triple Cask. That was very good. It seems there's DoubleWood in my local liqour store (Alko) for 69,95€ (0,7l). Maybe I'll buy that next.

Curtis' look at the end of the song was the same I saw in many metal heads faces when I watched NW for the first time live in 1999. Pure Magic. Unfortunately this was lost after Tarja era, now "perfection" has replaced the "magic", and metal was replaced with movie score. Just MY opinion... ;-)

Beside that, I dont care who or what is "more metal", because this is not a sports competition. It's all about the feelings which music invokes in people. As I said ... what I wrote is MY opinion, because this is how I felt and feel about this very band.
I would like to suggest a cover that Tarja made of Rammstein's song "Ohne dich". The cover was extremely beautiful. It was recorded at a church in Wacken. Tarja is accompanied only by a piano, a cello and a violin. Although I like Tarja's voice, I prefere the version sung by Floor (especially the version live at Tampere)
I also prefer Floor but either one of them is beautiful. Chosing between Floor and Tarja its not possible to go wrong.
