    I have the MS 661, what are the adjustments for the H/L and then the Idle. I screwed both H/L clockwise to seat. Then the H screw I turned counterclockwise 1 1/2 turns and the L screw I turned counterclockwise 1 turn. The idle I seated it and then turned it counterclockwise 3 turns to get a feel for it. BUT I can’t get it to stay running for more than 2-3 seconds. Any suggestions would be more than helpful. 🙏🙏🙏

      KC hi.
      Stihl sometimes has the setting on a sticker, or impregnated into the plastic on the side near the needle guide.
      Don't remember seeing one of those on a 661. But, I'm not looking for them either.
      It is usually around 1 or 1¼ of a turn out. But, that saw has limiter caps on the needles. You get around ⅞ of a turn, but not usually from being bottomed.
      I'd make sure the throttle shutter is open far enough so the saw will idle.
      Then you can adjust the low to where it needs to be. At that point, you can dial in the high speed needle.
      Where the needles end up will be different for a guy at 500' and someone else at 5000'.
      Air density, and the associated water vapor content plays a roll in where the needles end up additionally.
      Air cleaner choice and how dirty the air cleaner is will also slightly affect the needle adjustment.
      Therefore, there is no adjust them to "x" position.
      I did post a video around 4 winters ago that has the way I adjust a carb.
      Best of luck.
      Thanks for watching.

    How does a ported 462c-m compare to the stock 661c-m?

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  5 років тому +1

      Jesse G hi.
      I guess it would depend upon how far a guy went with the porting procedure on the 462. It would also depend upon the condition of the 661.
      I posted a video back in February of my 462, a 572, and a low hour, stock 660.
      The 462 was about a second, second and a half behind the 660.
      The newer 660s and 661s run about the same. Some of the older 066s run a little better than the 661s.
      I will be posting a build series with an 066 vs. a 661 shortly showing that.
      Thanks for watching.

    How hard would it be to put captive nuts on the large side cover?

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  6 років тому

      d hi. The set up is very different. The flange with the threads is long goes inside the 1/2 version cover - which is also wider where the studs pass through. The "bigkid" version cover uses nuts with the thread on the outside of the cover - completely the opposite of the 1/2 style.
      A few of the late version 661s are coming with captive nuts on the big kid clutch cover. I'd upgrade it if necessary.
      Thanks for watching.

    Hey bud, so I witnessed first hand that the newer 661cm have different cases than the older 661s. There are serial breaks but stihl doesn’t specify when they switched to a different case. The newer cases have a piece of case gasket cut out infront of the oil tank. If you use the older gasket the saw will not seal up right and leak bar oil. If you look up complete gasket kits and compare numbers for case gaskets from 661 vs total gasket kit there are differnt numbers. We learned this the hard way

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  3 роки тому

      Dave hi.
      I think it was ~ Dec '19.
      Serial # break is 187601926 ( Thanks to Mike there).
      The new version has a "beefed" up gusset on the inside of the oil tank in the bar stud area to add support.
      Seems as though some of the West Coast fallers running long bars are knocking the undercut out with the dawgs & cracking the early drive side case ½.
      Seems as though some of the West Coast fallers are still breaking the pto side case ½ in the upgraded version.. But, that number has gone down dramatically.
      Thanks for the notation about the case gasket set. Similar to the early vs later 066 operation.
      Thanks for watching.

    What is the part # for the single blade coil?

  • @joescissorhands141
    @joescissorhands141 2 роки тому

    Remarkable... Wish I could see #'s for port-lengths on all these jugs but I'm astounded at Stihl's (SEEMING) lack-of R&D on the exhaust-port.....Jennings' work (which is half a century old :P ) says tighter exhaust ports are where manufacturers(racing bikes)were moving, because of tighter exhaust pulses....but chainsaws don't have pipes, I figured that's gotta be why you showed us the 088-->880 exhaust flange becoming -*-significantly-*- larger/megaphone'd....but now, to see this video wherein the 661 flange is now smaller than a 660 flange, unless I'm not understanding Stihl's "chronological numbering system" it means that Stihl made the move to higher-divergence exhaust ports, then *back*....how on earth did the R&D not find&nail "an optima" decades ago? THEN you say the 661 flange is smaller than a 461--- did you mean a 460 or a 461? Because if it's smaller than a same-generation, lower-displacement model's jug then I am just made of questions for their engineers, lol!! BTW off-topic kinda but if you've seen the Grunt Gasket idea (by Dominant Saws) i would be real eager to hear your thoughts, IMO (or 'everything I understand about it') this should only have a positive effect, provided it's not a converging-angle at least IE a choke-point, so long as it's got 1+ angles of increasing divergence it should help, even 1/2 century ago in Jennings' book he mentions Yamaha&Suzuki using at-least 3 increasing angles of divergence on the "entry pipe" that leads-into the divergence cone of an expansion chamber...I always envision our muffs as the chamber, and the exhaust port as "port, header pipe and divergence-cone all in 1" --- having an extra inch of port/header length for more increased-angles of divergence should only help things, it is very very surprising to me seeing Stihl close-down that port so tightly.....but when EPA regulations are part of it our best efforts at "reverse engineer theory" could all be wrong if, say, they intentionally induce a choke-point somewhere....we always operate on them "knowing&doing what is smartest" or at least I do :P

    I really like the large chip deflector. Where would I purchase one of these for me 661cm? I just now googled “big kids” clutch cover and looked on EBay but to no avail. When it’s spitting chips out they seem to go straight out the back a lot of the chips missing the deflector. Where do I get a larger deflector that is fatter and hangs down further?? Also, where are you purchasing your tachs for your saws?? Hey Thanks in advance. Please don’t stop making videos!

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  4 роки тому

      Stephan hi.
      I coined the phrase/s "big kid clutch cover" and/or "big kid dawgs". Consequently, you won't be able to find any "Google info".
      Any decent saw shop can order you one of the West Coast style clutch covers. If they give you grief, call Madsen's out in Chehalis.
      A Google search will net you a place to buy the Pulse tachs. There are several. But, some won't work on the m-tronic or auto-tune saws. So you better verify first.
      Dead set on a Pulse that monitors the newer saws, hit the Husky shop. That's who makes their older tachs.
      Want a Stihl version, it's the EDT-9.

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  6 років тому +1

      d pete hi. I guess that depends on what a guy is looking for. The 066/660s are a proven platform and are fairly bullet proof. The 661s had some electronic and over heating issues early on. The fuel metering solenoids are prone to malfunction and only cost (the part itself) ~ 45 to replace...
      Occasionally the coils still go out it seems. I think that it is possible to get more lowend out of the 661s IF using all stock and original fitment components for each saw.

    Hi, The new Stihl MS 500i fuel injected saw is about to be released - cant wait to see your analysis on the workings of the saw and how it compares to others. Do you have any initial thoughts on fuel injected saws?

    • @hotsaws101
      @hotsaws101  6 років тому

      Ben hi. It will be interesting for sure.
      I think that the engineers are going the way of the new cars. Partly because of the emission standards. A lot of times the fuel can be "misted" into the throttle body because it comes in under pressure - as apposed to drawn in by the vacuum created from the piston action. Net; more atomization of the fuel and better burn characteristics. So I think the premise is then a more fuel efficient and cleaner running 2-stroke. But then the port timing comes into play along with the scavenging effect - not always the best in some saws.
      Thanks for watching.
