    Honestly the biggest difference between FFXIV and other MMOs is that while MMOs will usually "have" a story, FFXIV IS a story. The plot and worldbuilding are the primary focus with the game being built around it as opposed to the usual MMO method of build a game and then tack some kind of plot on to loosely tie things together.

    Van Darnus didn't "attempt" to bring Dallamud down, he did it successfully. That was how 1.0 ended. Alternatively, the final questline from the 1.0 msq had us going around to the various temples and praying...turning Louisoix into the Pheonix primal, which is the version of him you see here.
    For those of us who played 1.0, this was fulfilling.

    • @Blazieth
      @Blazieth 5 місяців тому +3

      Of course, Louisoix becoming the Phoenix wasn't actually revealed until here in this very raid. Until this, all anyone knew was "somehow Bahamut was stopped, but hell if we know how." This raid was also how Nael being a woman was revealed - for English players, this was a twist and a half due to everyone thinking Nael was a guy. For Japanese players, it was merely a reveal, as the game had never given Nael any voice-acting, and always used gender-neutral pronouns for her. That's harder to do in english without being *incredibly* conspicuous, though.

    • @forcesinbalance5685
      @forcesinbalance5685 5 місяців тому +1

      Learning of Louisoix's fate was formative for my WoL. It's a big part of the reason he so willingly takes on all so many menial chores and quests that many would see as beneath him: it's all part of his campaign to keep people from putting him on a pedestal like Louisoix.
      Summoning a primal requires aether and faith. And the people who channeled the aether for Louisoix's ritual of the Twelve may have been praying at the Marks of the Twelve...but the one they really had faith in was Louisoix himself. He was the wise mentor who always knew what to do, the mighty sorcerer who could wield impossible magics, the _man who would save the realm_ if they just supported him. All the pieces were there, and in the moment of crisis, they turned their faith to him. And, desperate to save what he could, he accepted this unintended apotheosis.
      As for my WoL...well, you may respect the guy who comes over and helps you muck out the chocobo stable, and you're probably grateful to him. But when you've seen him sweaty and stinky, with feathers in his hair and straw stuck to his face, you're not going to _pray_ to him.

    Coils is anything but basic. It’s difficult enough that in later expansions raids will be separated into normal and savage difficulty levels. You do the normal version first, then unlock savage.

      Which I REALLY appreciate. Being able to PUG normal mode raids for the story has allowed me to see way more endgame content than I ever managed in WoW, thanks to the social challenges of the 25-man and 40-man raids.

    So the writer for this raid quest series is Ishikawa, she also writes for the crystal tower raids, several parts of the MSQ (More and more as the games went on), the dark knight questline, the stormblood 8 man raid content and the rogue questline until eventually being made the MAIN scenario writer in shadowbringers and promoted to supervisor in endwalker. Know her name, pretty much everything she touches is gold. She got an actual standing ovation at the first fan fest after shadowbringers because of how good her writing is.

    Nael deus Darnus is such a wild ride.
    The middle names of Garlean citizens are basically epithets, like titles, and the further down the alphabet your epithet is, the more important. That's why the royal crown has zos as a middle name, why someone as important as an Imperial Legate (imagine someone who is a general and a state senator combined) gets van, etc etc. This Nael going with "deus" doesn't fit into the pattern we know, because it's not a real Garlean epithet, it's just assumed. I suppose it's a big presumptuous reference to the fact this Nael is the servant of a god, hence, deus.
    The reveal about Nael actually being Eula _the entire time_ is absolutely crazy, because it was invented because of a translation mistake. Basically in 1.0 there was ambiguity in the script about the gender of the character and the English localization department went with masculine pronouns because eh. Welp, turns out Nael was a woman the whole time and they didn't know until Coils was being written and the whole thing got clarified. So to rectify this, instead of just going with "Nael was a woman the whole time oops" they invented this big chunk of character lore about Eula deliberately masquerading as her brother after he died very early in his political career and that is now CANON it even made it into a freaking official lorebook. It honestly not only adds a bit of interesting flavour to Nael/Eula as a character that doesn't get in the way of anything, it also genuinely helps the Garlean Empire feel less like just any old standard Evil Bad Guys Empire and more like a real, fleshed out nation full of actual three-dimensional characters who are treated just as much like people as the "good guys" are. Nael is no longer just a guy who got brainrotted by Big Dragon Man, suddenly there's also this side of a complicated tragedy over a young man's death and the hardship his sister went through to make him a true legend.
    It's also funny because it retroactively paints all of the White Raven's accomplishments in that ironic light. Eula did all that she did for the sake of Nael's reputation, but in the end, it was all by her own hand. Girl should give herself more credit.
    for... causing a genocidal apocalypse okay you know what maybe not

    • @EagleCeres
      @EagleCeres 5 місяців тому +6

      Also, Nael's gunhalberd is named Bradamante, after the original Nael's fiancée who impaled herself after finding out about her beloved's death. Eula used it as part of her White Raven disguise.
      The Bradamante gunhalberd that we see during the Hildibrand ARR questline is a fake.

    • @squidlump
      @squidlump 5 місяців тому +1

      It wasn’t quite translation problems, there weren’t plans for nael to be a woman initially but there were fan theories which the devs thought it would be cool to use when it came to coils. Well, every language explained the situation differently so consensus was pretty much non existent. The stuff with Eula came in several expansions later as a way to have a consistent backstory throughout all languages

    Fun fact worth noting: that halberd that Nael summons that Hildibrand and Gilgamesh were fighting over... it actually showed up in the 1.0 Hildibrand questline, too. Though... not quite 1.0. Toward the end of the questline. Right near the very end, it turns up in the possession of a random farmer who bought it from a merchant. While helping the farmer tend his field with what turns out to be very explosive material, Hildy ends up miunderstanding a prophecy and thinking he's fated to fight Dalamud himself.
    While holding what he believes to be a defunct weapon, he fires the weapon (it's a Gun-halberd, after all), ignites the field, and sends himself flying - setting up for the start of the Hildibrand questline in A Realm Reborn.
    Fun fact though... the one that Hildy and Greg fight over later isn't actually the real weapon. The real weapon is called "Bradamante". The one they fight over in ARR is called "Pradamante", and is merely a replica.

    • @Dhalin
      @Dhalin 4 місяці тому +1

      "Answers" in general is just... a wild crazy song when you think about it, because hot dang, it is used often in the game, in its original form and in many "remixes" of just pieces of the melody in many cutscenes and it instantly makes any cutscene epic almost. That's to say nothing about a certain cutscene they use it for way later in the game, because holy crap it really hits hard there, lol.

    Bit late here, but I've heard other MMOs called MMORPGs with the massive multiplayer online part front and center and the RPG aspects are there to facilitate the game.
    FFXIV, on the other hand, is an RPGMMO where the story of an RPG takes front and center and the massive multiplayer online aspect is just to facilitate the game.

  • @RothAnim

    Glad you got to do this! I was hesitant to do raiding in FF14, and the lack of CoB support in the roulettes made it very hard to do at the time. Raid stories may not be part of the MSQ progression, but they are still all feed into the overarching story of the game, and often provide additional context if you have completed them. The Alliance Raids and Normal raids can be done by PUGs which means everyone gets to enjoy the content, with Extreme Trials and Savage raids being optional for those who want a coordinated challenge.

    I think the sister thing for Nael van Darnus was because in the original language, pronouns aren't always gendered, the armor also makes it unclear, and 1.0 didn't have voice acting, so the translators just went with he. And when it was revealed that van Darnus was a woman they had to come up with an explanation after saying he for all that time.

    The funny thing for me is that coils is /just/ fine. I personally rank it as my least favorite of the 8 man 'normal raids' and it's in the bottom three for the grander "optional but important side stories" that are raid series, trial series, and alliance raid stories. It's not bad, but a lot of it is "Look at all this stuff from a game you haven't and cannot play" and the three characters that survive it, the twins and Urianger, are basically different people by the time heavansward wraps up, because they develop so much, and so far away from where coils leaves them. All the Allagan and Bahamut stuff is great though, so there's that.

    1. Coils is the true ending of ARR. It gives so much closure to 1.0
    2. The Coils were actually pretty controversial when they came out.
    Because they were so much more difficult than just about anything else in the game at the time, most players never got to see some pretty important story content
    The outcry was heard though as from here on:
    A) Raids were made into side stories. Good on its own, but not VITAL to understand the story going forward
    B) Raids were separated into Normal and Savage versions

    Eons is a bit much. The whole world came into it's current form some 12000 years ago and the Allagans were around "just" 5000ish years before the start of the game, while eon to my knowledge is used for millions of years and upward. Besides, Dragons are functually immortal to begin with, and will live forever, unless they die of illnes of injury, to the point that some of them can barely seperate what happened yesterday from what happened a thousand years ago. We also don't know how much of a mind this primal had, compared to his physical counterpart, before the Allagans killed him and the other Dragons summoned a primal in his general shape, but bigger.

    Something I love about final fantasy XIV raids is the attention to detail even in something as basic as arena floors, the bahaumut arena is based on the scientific tree of life which is supposed to show the evolution of all life from a single common ancestor (The tree of life, also called a phylogenetic tree, is a graphic tool that biologists use to portray evolutionary relationships among plants, animals and all other forms of life.). The thing is bahaumut is floating above the arena as if he's above all life on the planet and that we are literally beneath him in both contexts.

This may be a hot take but there are many of us who would trade in any hildibrand stream for raid story content on stream.

      It is. Especially because at that time this was very surprising because you didnt have that kind of cinematic break that leaves from one phase to another. WoW bosses had it but it was not that directed. Now these days multiple encounters in FFXIV have it but Bahamut was a mindblowing premiere.

    I think you have a tiny but significant misconception about the purpose of the "Alligators" as you put it. Bahamut is their weapon. They intentionally torture the dragons and release him on their enemies. It's like a screw you all button that they can press at any time.

    I did same thing with other youtuber - helped him to clear coils on what is pretty much story mode, with promise that we will clear it later as a full group with min ilvl, no echo.
    It was a hard fight.
    Most fights in the raid are just annoying.
    But Bahamut Prime was the first time when we had to finally get into a voice chat and have proper callouts.
    It is a hard fight. Really hard.
    But it is so rewarding to see when all mechanics work together.
    Both tanks have to do their job properly - kite boss and add to specific places and keep them there.
    Manage their mitigations at correct timings.
    Know when it's beneficial to do the damage burst.
    Bahamut Prime is one raid of a kind. Frankly, newer raids can be harder. They are faster and they require better coordination.
    But none have same mechanics that Bahamut has or same responsibilities.
    It is a shame that this raid is not adapted for a story and duty roulette since, for example, O12 (last of Stormblood raids) that IS in duty roulette (and in free trial) and is pretty hard raid that requires players to understand what they are doing and O12 kinda almost has this part where tanks have to keep two targets separate, but it's not as important as with Bahamut.
    One of the raids in this game is outright required to proceed further through the story (won't say more to avoid spoilers but aside the fact that it appears in like 9/10 of raid roulettes - it's a really good raid series) but realistically - every Normal and Alliance raid is required to do because every single one is adding important insight to the world of FFXIV as a whole (ok, not every single one - Nier raid series is pretty inconcequential and brings more confusion than anything else even to people who have good knowledge of Drakengard/Nier series but that's the only outlier) or directly to the story - bringing characters, concepts and plot points from raid of one expansion to the core narrative of another (or not, it will depend on what developers will want to do with it).
    For someone who had to live with complete change of narrative and dropping of the narrative plot points in their favorite games (would it be complete design change in Dragon Age 2 or Mass Effect 2, complete abandonment of plot points in different Megaman series or even the fact that in Baldurs Gate 2 you start with Minsc and Jaheira even if you killed them in BG1 and game literally forces you to deal with it), seeing this dedication to continuity is just incredible!

    I started playing in 2.0 and had started on Turn 1 but only came back during Shadowbringers. Going through the rest of Coils as optional content to do for funsies was absolutely wild because I didn’t know that the ending of the cinematic was hidden at the end of the raid. This game is incredible.

    What’s fascinating about this is that it is purely optional. You are not required to beat this before moving on in the story despite how crucial of a story element this is. Granted, it’s cake now thanks to unsync but the story here is way too important to skip.

    there's a reason that a LOT of people clasify FFXIV as a RPG-MMO, its very story first, online game second. if you enjoyed how they wrapped up a part of the storyline neatly then you're in for a treat as you go further into said storyline.
    I'm fairly sure your pal Galactic will be able to guide you to any of that which is off the MSQ, like Coils here, but there is so much good writing to come, Ishikawa is responsible for much of that.

  • @Lordoftheapes79
    @Lordoftheapes79 5 місяців тому +1

    So, Coils is not indicative of what future raids will be like. The big mantra for FFXIV is that this is a Final Fantasy game first and an MMO second. Which means, locking story content behind extremely difficult content that half of the player base will never do, goes against that mantra.
    So, starting in Heavensward, they design two versions of raids, one that is about as hard as an extreme trial and one that is proper raid level difficulty.

    • @EagleCeres
      @EagleCeres 5 місяців тому +1

      Coils was the Dev Team's first attempt at high tier raid content for FF14, and only the 2nd coil has a Savage version.... it lives up to the Savage epithet. Minimum Item Level No Echo on all of Coils is no joke and still as hard as modern raid progression. They learned a lot and trimmed a lot of fat for Heavensward and best tuning/setup is noticeable as of Stormblood raids going forward.

  • @TifaTakeuchi

    FF14 isn't so much a MMORPG, as it's a RPGMMO.

    • @benoitrousseau4137
      @benoitrousseau4137 5 місяців тому

      This is completely false and I wish people stopped spreading this RPGMMO bs.
      It's fine to not engage with anything beyond story, but that doesn't mean that the group content is not best-in-class, that there aren't a myriad of cool free companies and link shells to join, that people aren't always socializing in large-scale multiplayer events like hunts and Eureka, or that it doesn't have the best role-play support of any online game (and it's not even close.)
      FFXIV is a kickass MMORPG and honestly the best MMORPG on the market at the moment.
