I am both jealous that you got to go there and pet the isopod and unconvinced that I wouldn't be thrown out for trying to hug the isopod if I could get there...thank you for the glimpse of this exhibition, it is greatly appreciated.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. The isopod shell felt just like a crab shell. I asked a docent nearby about the process of bringing up creatures from that far down and whether they needed to maintain high pressure on them. He said no, they don't have any air sacs that would expand and cause problems. The main thing was bringing them up very slowly and keeping them in conditions that are both very cold and low oxygen which is what they're used to.
Thank you for taking me somewhere I'll most likely never get to see in person. I'm from Salinas and Monterey area..I live in Oklahoma and am disabled. The Aquarium is amazing. In to the deep was something so amazing. So many awe inspiring sea life to enjoy 🤗😊
I’ve been here a while back and let me just say two things: the spider crabs… dear God… I severely underestimated how big they were… they even made a kid cry bc of how utterly large they were. Is it a bad thing? Naw, that was hilarious and amazing ^^ Second: isopod. Yes I did pet the isopod. The water is extremely cold, but when you pet that buddy… man… I wanted to pet it again despite possible hypothermia/body shock-! 1000% worth it
I have not been in a few years and I miss monterey so much so THANK YOU! also I have never seen a line for entry, let alone one that long what the hell😭 I truly hope i get to go again before they replace it
You’re welcome! I’m glad you enjoyed it. Every time I go there seems to be a long line. I’m glad I have a membership. I only go about once a year but I’m happy to support the aquarium and I’m happy to skip that line! :)
Monterey Bay Aquarium has never had a goblin shark on display as far as I know. The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in Yokohama, Japan has had one (2020), but it isn't clear if it's still on display the picture in this story appears to be of a model of a shark: churaumi.okinawa/sp/en/topics/1607492416/ Here's a video of the Goblin shark swimming at that aquarium with a frilled shark that appears to be already dead: sharkyear.com/2016/japan-goblin-shark-and-frilled-shark-displayed-in-yokohama-aquarium.html
They have specialized ships that go out and get specimens. www.mbari.org/at-sea/ships/ I asked the docent about the pressure and he said they don't have to be kept at high pressure because they don't have any air bladders like some creatures do. They just brought them to the surface very slowly. You also have to keep them at the very cold temperature and low oxygen levels that are found in their natural habitat.
No, the sign for that section says (3:23): "Step inside and enjoy a show with video of real bioluminescent midwater animals!" So they weren't live animals in a tank, but it was a video of live animals demonstrating bioluminesce.
It's a great facility. Unlike many aquariums, it concentrates on marine life in the local Monterey Bay Area. They periodically have exhibits like this to show other creatures.
@@minthantlin9168 that’s a great question! I assume they’ll be returned to the ocean. Or perhaps kept in tanks behind the scenes to live out their lives.
It's very dim since there's very little light at the depths these creatures live at. After a few minutes your eyes get used to the dark and you can see fine. There's enough light on the tanks so you can see the animals are doing.

You're welcome! I've been going to the aquarium every year or so since it opened and I think this is on the best special exhibits they've ever done!
@@BetaCygniBlog I've never been there. We have an aquarium here in Oklahoma but it's nothing compared to Monterey 😊

Im not from the US but I might go to California for the first time and I´ve been so very excited at the possibility of going to this exhibition!!!!
I would definitely put it on your list! Monterey Bay is a beautiful area of California. There's a lot to see beyond the aquarium.
I was there last thursday i had so much fun

I agree that petting the Isopod was worth the whole trip! :)
The video ad got me interested to see the glimpse of these deep sea creatures inside the aquarium.
They're really cool along with the rest of the aquarium. 😎
I’ve been to Manila ocean park. Had you been there?
No, I haven't had a chance to visit Manila yet. What's the most interesting exhibit there?

Apparently fish do sleep, but they could be just resting.
