    I only 'found' your channel today and I'm so glad I did. I've recently returned to sewing after about 20 years abstinence due to work commitments and, although, previously I have made numerous garments, including tailored suits and coats, after such a gap I've been making simple things to regain the confidence I once had. Having said that, I never drafted my own pattern, but you have taken the mystique out of pattern drafting, and I love the skirt, so thank you, thank you. I'm so looking forward to your next video x

    You have a pleasant voice for teaching and I love your style! You make it sound possible to make one’s wardrobe and then you proceed to sew one step at a time which is really what we do! Sewing classics and using good fabric is a home run. I have sewn many years and have learned that I am more successful when I do this. I also like to go shopping in really nice stores to see what is current and also to check their techniques for constructions. I’m looking forward to more of your work!

    This is one of the clear videos from start to finish of garment making ie Skirt with front buttons.Thanks Casey.Love your videos.For sake of Beginners I am going through them
    1 Measurement and Recording it.
    2 Selection of Fabric(True +muslin)
    3 Cutting Fabric Muslin
    4 Assemble Muslin and trial
    5 Apply pins to mark areas of looseness
    6 Apply pins for Back darts.
    7 With Muslin corrected for looseness transfer to Sketching Paper.
    8 Mark all areas for Darts and instructions to cut including direction of cuts(I would use iron on interfacing to secure the template paper)
    9 Transfer from Paper to True Fabric and mark all Darts .
    10 Allow for Seam allowances
    11 Allow for Waist Band (Paper + True Fabric)
    12 Cut True Fabric
    13 Stitch as directed (including interfacing)
    14 Attach Waist Band
    15 Pin or mark places for buttons
    16 Stitch button holes and Buttons
    17 Grand Trial with True skirt.
    18 Mark areas of looseness .
    19 Correct areas of looseness
    20 Treat the edges of Vent
    21 Treat the Hem to your desired look.
    22 Final wear and Cat Walk Baby
    Here are some variation which I can think of
    1 Instead of button try open zip.
    2 Instead of buttons try Central Zip
    3 Instead of Waist band try Elastic?
    4 Add side pockets?
    5 Give suggestions for matching Shirts.
    The final Red Carpet version
    Same as Casey's Skirt
    Shirt linen shirt with full sleeves and black buttons
    Black infinity scarf
    Black head band or black bow with white polka dots.
    Black Ray ban
    Black handbag
    Black shoes
    Thick golden colored Chain
    That is your night baby!
    I now have to write all these in my notes for my next project
    I am going to make this shirt!!!

I am planning on having them take their favorite ready to wear items and utilize your techniques to teach them pattern drafting. It's a standard I have not always taught as completely as your videos can teach my students. It's a format that they will understand and appreciate because they can review when they get to a point where they need a question answered. I often teach various level in one class period, so this video format can make those students independent learner. Thank you so much!!!

    Hi Casey,
    Great video. What I would love you to share is how you take a block for a bodice, skirt, etc, and create a pattern from which you sew a garment. I’ve tried making bodice blocks (slopers) and then struggle to create a garment. Ease and zippers make me nervous and I would appreciate help in overcoming these challenges.

    Perhaps for us clumsy types, we use tailors chalk instead of a pin to mark the hip distance? Great tip though!

    • @PatternScout
      @PatternScout  2 роки тому

      Oh yeah, I would normally use tailor's chalk for a garment I plan to wear, but for the muslin I use pen so it doesn't wipe away. :)

    Found your channel recently and enjoy it immensely. I like your simple straightforward explanations. I am a sewer of many years both fashion and home decor. I just completed a chair slipcover no pattern….not great but I did it! So, your wonderful tutorial has given me the inspiration to draft this darling skirt. What online fabric sites do you recommend? And, never was aware of the chisel to open button holes. Keep up the great work. A new subscriber.

      Oh thank you so much! I shop a lot at my local JoAnn fabric store. But online, I like blackbirdfabrics.com, measurefabric.com, fabric.com, and moodfabrics.com.

    Your skirt turned out really well! This is a great video. I would like to be able to sew like this-- fitted to my measurements. I am curious as to how tall you are? I think your channel will grow fast as your content is very good. Congrats on reaching 10K.

      @@PatternScout Aah you’re an absolute diamond Casey. Thank you. I’ll look up the Rotary Cutter and see if i can get it here in the UK. As for the iron, I won’t bother with the shark if you think it’s not so good. 😆 Thanks all the same.

    Irrelevant to the tutorial, but can you link those tan shoes/heels? So cute and exactly what I've been looking for!

      Haha, i love those shoes and I don't have a link for them, sadly (bought them a few years ago at TJ Maxx...I think they are Steve Madden or Madden Girl...). They go with everything!

    Hi! I’m a new subscriber. Thanks for this tutorial. I’m not a sewist yet and this video is giving me courage to try. Did you cut a muslin first?

    • @PatternScout
      @PatternScout  2 роки тому

      Thanks so much for subscribing! I made the muslin while making the initial pattern for the skirt and used that to make the final skirt.

    Casey , can this skirt be made with cotton fabric instead of linen? I purchased 2 yards of teal blue cotton fabric and I would love to make it for my daughter - it will be my first project in many many years !!! Thank you for sharing your talent with us!!

    I like this as a tutorial in how to make a sloper, but as an easy beginner's skirt, it fails because few beginners have a serger. What seam should we use instead, or how else to hem the interfacing?

    • @PatternScout
      @PatternScout  2 роки тому +1

      I just posted a video on seam finishes that provides options for folks without a serger, and if you check out my wrap top videos I show other methods for finishing the edges of facings. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

    Excellent video. I have a skirt like this on my inspo board, and now I can make one that is custom fit!!! I have two questions...how do you estimate how much fabric you will need? Also, does the length have to be cut parallel to the selvages, or could it be cross grain?

    • @PatternScout
      @PatternScout  2 роки тому +1

      Yes!! It is a pretty easy make and I have used this pattern over and over for other dresses/skirts! I would recommend cutting on grain/parallel to the selvedge. To estimate fabric, the width of the fabric needs to be at least 4 to 6 inches greater than the widest part of your lower body (hip or waist) to account for ease and seam allowance. If the fabric width is too narrow, then you'll add more yardage to the length. And the length should be the length you want your skirt, plus about 6 inches for hem allowance and facings.
