Brian Slagel has honestly made a bigger contribution to metal than anybody else. Little did he know at the time what kind of impact putting Metallicas "Hit the lights" on the 1st Metal Massacre compilation would have on the entire genre. That basically kickstarted the entire Thrash movement and along with that an incredible lineage of bands. If Slagel never would have given Lars a spot on that compilation and with that Lars forming Metallica...metal could be VERY different than it is right now. Thank you Brian Slagel for having a helping hand into creating the kind of metal that we all know and love today. Metal Blade is and always will be MASSIVELY important to this genre.

These fellas like Brian were blessed enough to grow up in an era when there were bands worth signing and issuing.
Every damn modern band seems to have the Napalm Death growl.

This is one of the only times I've heard someone mention LA's "KWEST" (105.5)! Unfortunately I was JUST discovering FM radio and probably in 2 years getting into the station and its embracing Progressive Rock and early Hard/Heavy Rock, they disappeared :(. But if it wasn't for KMET and the debut of Jim Ladd's "Metal Shop" every friday night circa 1983(?), It may have taken a bit longer to finally become a Metalhead, and along with KWEST, KLOS and my own discoveries as a Progger - until the 2 meshed as other subgenres grew as well. And then a 18 year old kid from Seattle who had an all Thrash and Death Metal show on KSPC 88.7 (Pitzer/Pomona College) called "Infernal Rage" circa 1988, gave me an International education on the extreme metal scene at its beginnings.
But its people like that young student and Brian Slagel that kept the Metal Underground alive and thriving.
Thank you Brian (and all the friends, bands and people I've met on my Metal and Prog journey) \m/.
. . . and btw - Thank you HUGELY for "Fates Warning" :).

I wonder how they've been able to adapt to UA-cam with being able to listen to anything whenever you want without having to buy it. But, anyway, I have so many Metal Blade albums. I started with the Metal Massacre albums and then went on to Fates Warning and others. Very cool video!

This guy most likely is the single biggest reason (besides the band themselves) behind Cannibal Corpse's success. Yes they may have eventually found another label to sign them, but we may never have gotten Eaten, Butchered, Tomb, or possibly even other albums of theirs.. And who knows IF they would have even found another label that would sign them. Brian loved their demo (particularly Skull full of Maggots) and rolled the dice and signed them. Fucking Legend!
