    Great video but how are you gon tell a story about Adam wanting to be called Emily and then misgender her, It's the little things folks this could've been caught and corrected in editing.

      That really irks me cause she literally contradicts herself and is also part of the problem.

    I have been a nurse for 22 years and I can not believe this lack of compassion and empathy is still out there. It enrages me. I loved the last response in the video: "Our lives depend on their capacity to care". I took an oath to do this and it is in my practice to treat everyone with respect.

    The woman should probably be using she/they pronouns for the person that identifies as Emily. (Adam)

    I don’t really see why sexual orientation has anything to do with healthcare.
    When you take your car in the mechanic, he doesn’t question your driving habits and it’s none of his business. Just diagnose the symptoms, give an estimate and either I can afford it or not. It’s as simple as that.

      That would be nice if people weren't being treated poorly for their sexual orientation. Also, it can definitely be medically relevant. So if you choose to ignore the aspects you don't agree with, there are still other reasons to know and be respectful of this information

    I am not one to judge and never will. We are all humans and have feelings and rights to those feelings. I dont care what anyone is or isnt. I treat people with respect period. Our society needs to just focus on their lives and helping others and not so much hatred. Not everyone is using the same Bible either. I use King James version but Im not going to judge people as it is not my place. I love visiting with people of all walks of life.

    I have a question regarding this video. Why does a healthcare provider need to know this? A person's thinking has little relevance on if a person has an infection, disease, plague, etc? Gender does not determine the severity of Cancer. Or if one contracted a viral or bacterial infection? Healthcare is based on anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, etc.

      It's important to know because of the health risk factors and the ability to establish a genuine therapeutic relationship.

    • @aishanunez6142
      @aishanunez6142 5 років тому +16

      Stephen Ferris Hello Steven, I hope my response answers your question. When caring for patients, a primary objective for health care providers is to establish a therapeutic relationship with patients in order to promote healthy lives. When working with LGBTQ patients, it is important to develop trust to counteract the discriminations or stigma they previously had experienced in health care. During an exchange, the health care staff may display negative verbal or non verbal behaviors based on biases that can be internalized by the patient and may lead to worse physical healthcare outcomes. Therefore, it is important to be aware of any biases or stereotypes you may have towards this community. This is the first step in becoming a cultural competent health care provider. Yes, you must be aware of the sciences when caring for your patients. However, health care is much more holistic. It aims to take care of all factors of health and illness, spiritual, physical, psychological, and sociological. Holistic care treats the whole person, rather than just the disease or illness.

    As long as there is potential discrimination for being part of LGBT, there will be reticence in sharing the information with the medical community. We want to be treated for whatever ailment brings us to get help and this often means having to hide our LGBT status. Bringing it out can get us ignored, mistreated, fired, etc.

    I am not insensitive towards this issues. I do apologize for being crass. However, as a person of Color (I despise the term), I don't expect any different medical treatment or request for an Hispanic doctor. I don't expect to be treated any differently. All patients, of whatever stripes, should be treated with respect and compassion. Your identity should not used for preferential treatment. Many blessings to this community, and I hope all of you flourish and find happiness in this life.

    • @santolina8
      @santolina8 3 роки тому +9

      I don't think anyone is asking for preferential treatment. They are asking to be treated with compassion and for their life experiences to be validated and respected by their providers.

      @@albertogutierrez8653 , we’re going to have to agree to disagree then. I believe respect is something to extend to all human beings as a recognition of their human dignity. Admiration can be earned, but I respect everyone.

      It can be a challenge, for sure. Before the current time period of increased education for healthcare workers, something I and other nurses encountered was rage and vitriol from patients whom we innocently and accidentally addressed as the non-preferred Mr. or Ms. The good news is, this has not happened to me in the past few years when I make this mortifying mistake (and apologize!) I hope there is more compassion now on “both” sides.

    Sexual orientation is IRRELEVANT when diagnosing illness.
    What matters is your BEHAVIOR and LIFESTYLE.
    Doesn't matter what you "identify" as. You're a HUMAN.
    You are NOT a separate species. And to the doctors, having an attraction towards the same sex does NOT mean you automatically have certain diseases.

    The doctor's office called/addressed him by the name on his insurance card and he was offended? Silliness. Shoulda gotten the card changed if it was that important. That's like if I go to my doctor and they call me Katrina when I prefer to be called Peaches, or something. Am I gonna get pissed about that? Do I require that they call me by my nickname? People are looking for reasons to be offended.

    Homosexuality is not norm in human society.
    I believe this came from that we, as human beings forgot the word called:
    1) "Friend"
    2) "Friendship".
    3) "buddy"
    Any way, we must treat them with respect as same as everybody else is respected.
    May God bless them.
