Why Are Many Doctors Scared of Transgender Patients? | Kristie Overstreet PhD | TEDxLivoniaCCLibrary

  • What if every time you went to the doctor you felt judged and your health needs were not addressed? This is the reality for many of the approximately 1.4 million transgender adults in the United States each year. This timely talk is an invitation to develop, challenge, and shift how transgender healthcare is viewed. Dr. Kristie Overstreet is a clinical sexologist, psychotherapist, author, and consultant with 11 years of experience working with the transgender, gender nonconforming and gender queer community. She is a transgender care expert that helps individuals improve their relationship with themselves and others. As president of Therapy Department, a counseling and consulting practice she works with clients across the United States.
Her experience as a director of behavioral health hospitals gave her the opportunity to work with various medical teams and professionals. Her years of working with the medical community led her to identify that providers are not receiving training, education, and awareness to care for transgender patients.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

It's amazing what you won't learn in medical school, even though in my Ob-Gyn rotation I was taught how to do a DNC for miscarriage post care or clean up after a placental extraction. No one utteted the word abortion or taught us how to do one, let alone w patient mental health care in mind. This taught me that if I want to learn how to do something I needed to seek out my own internships with my own interest at the top of the list to ensure that I would be taught everything I felt I needed to know, instead of depending on the medical education system to teach me what they thought I needed to know. It's very odd to be taught how to do a DNC in Texas with no mention of the word abortion and then to do a rotation out in California that was pro-woman, pro-choice Midwifery and abortion care.

I believe the best think you can do to learn more is to ask the specific individual. Be honest and admit that you don't understand or are confused and want to understand the individual better. Tell them that they don't need to answer if they would rather not, and then ask your question. It's best to have that person answer than to try finding out elsewhere because only that person knows themself best.

This is the second time I watched this on UA-cam. I am an occupational therapist by trade. I am also a 2 timer on this very stage.
In my professional experience, I get to know some of my colleagues who are LGBTQ+. One thing I have learned is to not treat them any different than anybody else. At the workplace (and at other contexts that I meet them), I need to treat them with respect. I think this would be a great foundation if I were to see a LGBTQ individual in my regular job as a patient. Then, if specific things arise, I would try to remember such experiences and then try to ask such colleagues for advices.
Before I started this career, I would say I would have been uncomfortable with this population. I was uncomfortable because I didn't want to say anything that would offend such individuals. Hence, I would rather go with safe topics and try to observe and listen before taking a risk. I feel that if we all can take a step back and do so without judgment (especially health professionals), we can go a long way to serve the needs of the LGBTQ patients better.

Jimmy P, I just read your comment. To become an occupational therapist, you contact your local vocational technology center or college and ask what classes you need to take. Also, working as a volunteer or worker in a caregiver setting will help you know if this is the field you want to go into.

Trinity Livingston I always thought of myself as male as a young child.. As a teen I thought that I was intersex and was simply terrified of addressing my confusion/learning the (somewhat arbitrary) “truth” at all.. I wonder how many out there are like me and far too scared to even remotely bother getting the medical intervention they’d like.

I found this video because I experienced something uncomfortable at a doctors office today. Not the one who is overseeing my transition but a different one. The office people were so nice and accommodating but the doctor was the one who said something off color. This helped me realize compassion for doctors as well.

9:29 Estimated 10 million American adults are trans? 5 years ago? In 2022 that estimation is only 1.3 million based on UCLA research. 🤔
11:56 now it is 1.4 million. 5 years ago. Nothing changed since? 🤔

Everything thinks all trans people call the 'transphobic' card but literally, I'll just tell you what you said is offensive and like, if you say that's it's the truth and I shouldn't be offended, that is bad... That is transphobic. Because you can't tell me, a trans person, what is offensive to us and what shouldn't be said. You feel?

Notice how this doesn't get any closer to resolving the actual cause of the problem. This is why this is a nonsense response. A staff that is aware of and trained to deal with LGBTIQ issues doesn't actually make this kind of mistake to begin with. Education and training prevents the issue. Telling someone to 'not be offended' doesn't prevent the issue.

How to be saved and be right with God for eternal life! As anyone can get saved!
1-Admit you’re a sinner and be willing to turn from your own self righteousness to God.
2-Believe onto Jesus Christ, who being the begotten Son of God, died on the cross, was buried and resurrected for the full forgiveness of our sins as a free gift.
3-Confess onto God,asking to be saved by accepting this free gift of salvation, to start a new born again life after being saved from your sins by this free gift.
Scripture links below from the King James Bible.
    The Romans road to salvation.
1.Romans 3:10, “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:"
2.Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
3.Romans 5:8, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
4.Romans 5:12, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for all that have sinned:"
5.Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
6.Romans 10:9, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
7.Romans 10:13, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
An example of what to pray to God to get saved and forgiven of your sins.
“Dear God, I am a sinner and need saving. I know I’m not good enough to get to heaven and I need you to save me.
I need the righteousness of your son, Jesus Christ.
I believe that Jesus is the lord, who died, was buried and resurrected so that his precious blood can wash away my sins.
I trust in him alone to save me.
    Nothing else.
Not my good works or anything else.
Only Jesus. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.”
    More scripture.
    John 3:15-17
15."That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life."
16."For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
17."For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”
    Romans 5:8-9
8."But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
9."Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him."
    1 Corinthians 15:1-4,
    1."Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2."By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.”
3."For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;”
4."And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”
    Hebrews 9:27-28
27."And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:"
28."So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.”
    Ephesians 2:8-9
8."For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:"
9."Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
    Revelation 21:8
"But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
More Scripture for how people will act before/in the last days.
    1 Timothy 4:1-5
Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;"
2."Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;”
3."Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth..”
4."For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving”
5."For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.”
    2 Timothy 3:1-7
1."This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come."
2."For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,"
3."Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,"
4."Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;"
5."Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away."
6."For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,"
7."Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”

Gynecology (n.) also gynaecology, "science of women's health and of the diseases peculiar to women," 1847, from French gynécologie, from Latinized form of Greek gynaiko-, combining form of gynē "woman, female," from PIE root *gwen- "woman." Second element is from French -logie "study of," from Greek (see -logy).
