When I was in high school in the 80s, I had acquaintances that were serious rock/metal drummers, that were in local bands and they would talk about their progress, the latest metal songs from Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, etc. that they just learned, but without fail the discussion would often end with 'But are you able to play La Villa Strangiato?'.

Rush chick here! due to life did not start seeing them live until 90s but loved them since high school in 80s. Saw them 6 times, amazing each one, but Clockwork Angels tour with strings was amazing. Just remembering hearing “The Garden” makes the eyes misty. But in case this makes you think I only like the sappy stuff, I also dig Red Barchetta, Bytor, and, well, most of their catalog. I am not a musician but that kind of talent mesmerizes me.

I only saw them live twice - once at the “Sarstock” show (along with AC/DC & the Rolling Stones, etc) in 2003 with about 500k other fans here in Toronto. It was an epic (but short) set. The other was in 2007 Snakes & Arrows tour with my 7 year old son. We had nosebleed seats, but a member of the band’s crew asked us if we wanted to move up - and he lead us to seats right next to the stage! It was truly amazing (and extremely LOUD!). I wished I saw them more. I was gutted when I heard of Neil’s passing. RIP.

The album art was a triple entendre. There are movers physically moving pictures while people are crying because the pictures passing by are emotionally “moving,” while in the back a film crew are filming a “moving picture” of the forefront.

You have to love and respect the depth that those guys were going to in order to make us laugh and be impressed by the word play. Never will there be a band like them again. Thank you for sharing that, learned something new today 🤓 Be well.

Saw Rush for the first time when I was 16, November 7, 1982, Signals tour at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, MI, and every tour since. R40 was a real heartbreaker as I knew that was the end. The day we were informed Neil had passed, was a terrible day, nothing seemed right anymore. But what a special gift to have been alive while they were recording and touring.

I was at their last show in LA on August 1st 2015. I was so glad I was there on that historical night. I started going to Rush concerts during my mullet days in 1987. Went at least once to every tour until 2015. The lyrics and music have definitely been part of my life. Nice review!

The paper bag is an inside joke, after shows, Alex used draw faces on paper bags and put them on his head and have some goofy 'Alex-style' fun.

I only saw them 4 times. I kick myself for not seeing them every time they toured. I guess it was impossible for me to ever think they wouldn't be there. The first time I saw them was when I was in the Air Force and it was about 1986. It was while I was at Tinker AFB OK. Blue Oyster Cult opened for them, and it was the only time I saw them with an opening band. They blew me away. The energy that they generated was palpable. Watch their live performances to even get an inkling of what it felt like. The last time I saw them was R40. They were always just amazing. Clockwork Angels tour was one of my favorites with the orchestral accompaniment. There never will be another band like RUSH. They literally impacted my life and lifted me when I was down. Just beyond amazing.

A few corrections about Neil's equipment. At that point, he was using mostly A Zildjian cymbals, the Paragons came only in the early 2000s. The effect during the guitar solo is a piece of plywood hit on a bench. And he didn't have roto toms but a set of small concert toms and timbales.

"Bad guys" are from the cover of the Moving Pictures Album .. So so so so many Easter eggs in this one. Have seen them countless times since 1980 Most tours more than once. Back during the Test For Echo tour we saw them 3rd row center in Pittsburgh. A few days later for the Columbus show we were a bit late due to a rain storm shutting down the road we were on. We waited until the 2nd song ended to go to our seats... about 2nd or 3rd row stage left. (house right). Geddy was over with Alex when we go go the sets as the 3rd song had started. He then came over and waved to us... So cool. They mentioned in one of the documentaries that they do recognize the regulars.

I saw them at least once on every tour since "A Farewell to Kings" in 1977. My first show was 12/3/77, and I was 14 years old. It blew my mind because I was a drummer and I had never been to a rock concert before! Neil Peart has ruled my world since then. So I guess I saw them about 25-30 times in my life. Totally phenomenal live musicians! Check out the "bonus disc", Disc 3 of the "Different Stages" album to hear a live concert from the AFTK tour to get an idea of what it was like to see them back then.

Neil was raised in Port Dalhousie not Hamilton. Dad worked for the tractor supply company in St.Catharines back in the day. Port Dalhousie is part of St.Catharines nowadays.

actually that sound you're hearing that you described as a " trashy China cymbal " is actually a stack of plywood that he would whack with his stick.

For this song...I have seen many different versions of this song. The best, in my opinion, was the live version in Rio...the crowd was amazing

  • @cjonesufc

The studio version is great, but there are so many other live versions that are so much better. I think the one from Rush in Rio is my favorite performance
Live Rush is the BEST Rush.

Hey Colin, a couple recommendations for you.
Nic Collins (Son of that Phil) has a couple drum playthrough videos from the 2 bands he’s in that might be worth a watch:
Better Strangers - But I Don’t Know Your Name
    The Effect - Unwanted

Yoyoka Soma does a remarkable rendition of this song on her channel. I heard someone mention her on your last Livestream . Andrew Rooney led me to her and Band Maid ! That's when I discovered your work ! A wonderful cycle !

I just watched Yoyoka's version. She was 10 years old when she played it. I don't know how Rush does it. How does she do it? How is this even possible?!!!!!!!

@@avlisk Many have asked the same question about Yoyoka's ability . She was playing flawless jazz at 5 ! Some brains are just wired in a special way. Andrew Rooney and Wave Potter have reacted many times to her and have great breakdowns on her covers and original composition " SPARKLE" ! 😁🤯

5 times starting with Presto twice. First in Vancouver Canada then 5 days later at the Seattle Collisium, counterparts, test for echo both at The Gorge in Eastern Washibgton, time machine and finally Clockwork Angels both in Seattle. Amazing shows each time!

I think that "crashy china cymbal" was a board slapped down onto a chair (in the studio). Now I am wondering where I read that...(was many years ago)?

I actually kinda hate a lot of the fan-made videos because many misinterpret and many are way too cheesy
