Aguadilla as International Airport for the people of the west side of the island and my Wiz has a small airport does does charter flights to smaller Islands and to San Juan
Excellent job Jen. Beautiful Island living. My parents live nearby. They retired after leaving NYC. I visit them every year. I also enjoy your beautiful establishment with it's pools and restaurants. Presently I own my home in New Jersey and plan on retiring there one day.
For anyone interested, the cost of living in San Juan (any 3 bedroom/2 bathroom house) is around 700-1,000$ rent a month. Outside the metropolitan area the prices go down by a lot.
I would've chosen Cabo Rojo or Rincón over the metro area in a heart beat and with my eyes closed. You only want to be near the airport if you travel a lot, but if you're going to live here, a two (aproximately) hour commute to the airport won't kill you when you decide to travel. Besides, there's the Aguadilla airport which is way closer to Cabo Rojo and Rincón. The beaches of the west are the best.
Deadly Vibez yes, I’m in dental school and have dental hygienists in my class who made $8-$10 per hour. In the states they make $30-$40 an hour. And same with the dentists. They make way less on the island than in the states. The insurance companies pay way less for the services rendered. And since people don’t make a lot of money the professionals can not charge very much.

Hi there puerto rican here ! Humacao isn’t as expensive as san juan or dorado but what kills here is the electric bill .If you do well on $$ you will be good here way better than the US
It is probably top 10 of the more expensive places in Puerto Rico. Dorado, Condado and other areas of San Juan are the most expensive on the island. There are certainly other areas that are less expensive.
@@MrJobapa77 Possibly. There isn't very good data on cost of living around the island. Do you mean gated communities, neighborhoods, or cities? When you live in the Washington, DC metro area, Palmas del Mar looks like a good bargain to me if you are looking for a nice place to retire. However, I do not like the beaches of the Humacao area, I rather live on the West Coast of the Island, specifically, Cabo Rojo. Another area is Dorado where I lived in the early 90s when it was a best-kept secret, but now is too congested and it has lost its charm. The beaches in the Dorado area are very nice also, Los Tubos, Mar Chiquita, Puerto Nuevo. The Cabo Rojo area is less developed and you can still find areas surrounded by nature, that is, unspoiled by untamed urbanization. My mother lives in Boquerón, across from the Bird Sanctuary, my favorite place to go running. The area of La Parguera is beautiful and the towns that follow are underdeveloped but move there with caution since the earthquakes.
I actually moved to Cabo Rojo 6 months ago. There are so many great places around the island! Thanks for your insight. ua-cam.com/video/zOjvRVBbNeg/v-deo.html
Considering that Palmas has always been a pricey neighborhood, I am pleasantly surprised at how inexpensive the rents are for these furnished units in such a gorgeous resort style setting.
What other costs are associated? HOA fees, resort fees, tennis and golf fees, etc? I was just at Palmas last week and loved it! Got me thinking about what it would cost to live there.
Honestly, such a great vid. I appreciate it so much and now Palmas is definitely on my radar. a few questions - how are the grocery stores and eateries in the area? are you satisfied with the selections there? do you find the drive to San Juan to be easy and is it safe to drive back home at night? are there any younger folk like ages 20-30 in your community?
Your main Rte from the airport is route 1, route 2 if you are going through the southern part of Puerto Rico, and neither one is safe during the day much less at night. Speaking from experience, and I'm a Puerto Rican. My Island is beautiful, there's a lot to see and do, but one has to know their surroundings if nothing else, be with someone you can trust.
Thanks for the nice tour of the property. It's a beautiful resort! I have heard that this is one of the more expensive places on the island. Now I know it! This is in no way very reflective of Cost of Living in Puerto Rico as a whole or average though. While usually housing is the top expense for most people, there are many other things as part of a budget (health care, groceries, insurance, cars/maintenance etc). Maybe I'll make a video about cost of living from our perspective which is MUCH more frugal and closer to the average Puerto Rican expenditures. (We seriously only live on appx $1000 total per month and don't feel deprived at all!)
I’d love to see a lower cost of living in PR video (e.g. Rincon, west side of island). Are you still planning to make one or did you post it already? Please let me know. 😊

Jen, how has life in PR been affected by the economic problems and hurricanes? It seems to be a psychological barrier to many of us to ever thing of visiting PR. I would like to change that in myself......
@@retrodripsupport7510 How is life affected by the destruction from previous hurricanes and the possibility of future ones? Especially for immigrants and retirees?
@@dovygoodguy1296 the worst part is that the grid is a mess so there are power outages for 12+ hours on occasion. Most of the time it's 3-5 hours without power. Some highway signs haven't been replaced so can be confusing in some spots. Driving is always a mess in PR tho. But other than that it's just small quirks that were always apart of PR. If you're in a place like Palmas Del Mar you'll be fine. I have been going there since 2015 and I will say the amount of people there is much less than before the Hurricane. The locals certainly took the biggest blow from the Hurricane damage and loss of tourism.
@@dovygoodguy1296 Also PR has lost over 10% of its population in the last decade due to migration to the US so they have decreasing numbers of workers to maintain everything
If you file the paperwork moving from the Mainland to PR nets you a 4 percent tax rate on you, your partner and your business. A lot of people who live in these communities do just this and spend the rest of they’re lives paying little to no money on taxes which over 20 or 30 years adds up to in many cases millions of dollars saved while living in a golf resort. Sounds like a pretty sweet life to me
Palmas del mar is a very exclusive and expensive area. There are hundreds of cheap areas in Puerto Rico to lease or buy. Obviously she's well off and wanted to live in a very upper class residential area. That's extremely expensive for Puerto Rico. Look elsewhere in the same area or elsewhere in the island, and you will find rents from $600 and up or lower. You can buy a nice house for $60,000 or less.

@@JenThereDoneThat , i just moved into Shell Castle 6. $5k/month.
Will love to visit this town
Palmas del Mar is very relaxing and beautiful!

Sounds like a Gamble with Hurricanes. Veiws are nice. Better than New York.
We bought a home in Arecibo. Are there incentives to have a home totally solar-powered?
Yes! You will not have to pay PREPA for terrible service! That is the BEST incentive on the island for solar.
There are some commercial & business incentives, so check with your solar company if any apply to you.
Why did you choose Puerto rico over st. Croix?
At the time, I was still traveling quite a bit for work, so being close to an international airport with frequent flights was (and still is) important to where I live. Puerto Rico has everything I need and I really like it here.
Palmas Del Mar is expensive but not all the island
Very true. I would love to feature more areas of the island for cost of living videos.
Jen, how has life in PR been affected by the economic problems and hurricanes? It seems to be a psychological barrier to many of us to ever thing of visiting PR. I would like to change that in myself......
Just don't visit during Hurricane season it's fine in the winter.
You must visit Dorado town is beautiful 🤩
I have many friends in Dorado, but do not visit as often as we would like. ua-cam.com/video/snbyVybsh-g/v-deo.html
Looking to buy a place for my family my wife is puertirican are there any benefits she gets for doing anything there?
There are many places less expensive, and other places even more expensive. I am sharing 1 community on the island.
What is safety like in PR in those cheap areas? I live 2 hours away from a big city with very low crime rates.
At first she talks about cost of living , annd ,.... then the first thing she talks about is TENNIS ?
I suppose that is a bit of a tangent.
@@JenThereDoneThat Love the 8 tennis courts! I am going to check it out next year. Thank you!! Are mostly retired folks living there? Or are you seeing folks in their 40's * 50's living there as well?
It's easy cost of living in my state is $300-$550 a month rent. So try again
great video
Thanks!
lol, need to be close to airport, moves an hour and a half from the airport.
I know, right?!?! Early morning on the weekend, it is only a 45 minute drive. Only. HAHA.
You gave us lease prices.. I want to know ownership costs... HOA.. Community fees... etc.
Specific regimes within Palmas del Mar charge annual fees, in addition to Palmas Homeowner Association (PHA). Here are a few realtor site for properties in Palmas to get a better idea of prices for specific homes.

Buy some land and build, that’s how Puerto Rican’s do it. These transplants do not represent 99.9% of the islanders. Looks like Beverly Hills of the Island.
Is that included the maintenance fees?
There are maintenance fees from Palmas Homeowners Association (PHA) plus condos and gated regimes have additional HOA fees. Definitely confirm fees before you buy.
Que Linda!!

Why aren't there houses built with central air conditioners in Puerto Rico? That's a bummer....
Central AC would be pretty expensive, due to the cost of electricity. I don't think it is even necessary. I run my office AC for a couple hours in the heat of the day (11am - 3pm), and only my bedroom AC at night to sleep. If my house had screens to keep the mosquitoes out, I would sleep with my windows open 9 months out of the year!
The mountain towns don't need AC at all, and I like a big, cozy blanket when I sleep to keep me warm.

Puerto Rico gets so much bad press that it discourages so many people from wanting to go there. Economic problems, crime, suffering from hurricanes, high temperatures, etc. We have to get over it all.......How has PR been dealing with all these problems, and how are people who want to live there dealing with these things??
Here is my update post-Hurricane Maria
jentheredonethat.com/visit-puerto-rico-after-hurricane-maria/
With the sad exception that we lost Arecibo Radio Telescope, Puerto Rico is healing and rebuilding. Locals are resilient.
@@JenThereDoneThat Thanks. I guess it's more likely that older folks would prefer more "stability" in their location then younger, more adventurous people in terms of places with hurricanes etc.
That's one the MOST EXPENSIVE places to live in Puerto Rico...Not really Puertorican vibes there at all...Just old boring people waiting to pass...lmao..Live somewhere else that's live, fun, entertaining with tons of events and food nearby at half the pay !!
Too gringo
That’s not the Puerto Rican experience
Living in one of the most expensive and exclusive communities in Puerto Rico isn’t something the average person gets to do. What’s it REALLY like to live in Puerto Rico….

There are even less expensive places on the island.
@@JenThereDoneThat oh I’m aware. I lived there for 7 years. Your experience on a resort is not reflective of what my family’s experience is in Caguas and Bayamon. I still enjoy your videos.

This is the whitest translation of anything to do with Puerto Rico I've ever seen. Rink On?
Why is it that you can't be transparent about the living cost? The areas that you mentioned are high crime areas according to the lasted FBI criminal report. Please don't mislead the people about the serious criminal behavior in the areas that you mentioned.

It hurts my ears every time i listen to an american pronouncing the names of places and cities in Puerto Rico. It seems that they don't even bother to learn to call them properly. Not to mention that most mainlanders are not bilingual. I read here some comments about "2nd class citizens". I am an argentine and i assume the "2nd class" qualification goes to the ones who can't speak more than one language, right?
It takes practice! But, I am working on it.

I'll sum it for you. It's expensive as hell in that place. Only for the rich*
Just don't go if you look down on my people trust me that ocean will rise and swallow Evil go in with real love for the people and the culture ,food and music there's none other

You really don't need that amount of electricity she said?
OMG this is a Caribbean Island you'll need electricity. Puerto Rico weather in the east area could varied between 75 degrees Fahrenheit at night to 100 degrees Fahrenheit in daylight. This video has great PR.and it gives the island great promo but it's far from the reality. I don't know if is informative enough. Please before moving to Puerto Rico do you own search.
I include the cost per kWh so you can calculate what your electric costs will be.

Palmas is a pretty relaxed place, mostly families and retired people, there is really no nightlife except a few bars in Palmanova Plaza. That is one of my favorite things about the community, it is pretty quiet and relaxing.
