Are Derby Blades The Worst Blades? Let’s Find Out With A Shave!

  • This is my shave with possibly the most if not one of the most, hated double edge blades mentioned by a lot of wet shavers! This is the perhaps the 1st blade that I ever used when I started wet shaving. I haven't used a Derby Blade for a few years because I've moved on to better smoother & sharper blades. Other items used in this shave include Ariana & Evans SoCal Hipster Shave Soap, RazoRock Game Changer Safety Razor (0.68 plate), RazoRock 400 Black Noir Synthetic Shave Brush, & Pinaud Clubman Brandy Spice Aftershave.

I love Derby Extra blades in the right razor. They perform flawlessly in the Edwin Jagger DE89 and I get 5 shaves per blade with them. There isn't a smoother blade on the market, and I think they are very underrated.

This is a great blade in "The Potato Peeler". It is a mild blade that produces almost no razor burn or nicks. Does it tug? Of course, most mild blades do on tough beards. I have a really, really tough beard and get 3 shaves out of each blade and I'm doing the equivalent of 5 passes on each shave. Baby smooth, and did I mention NO RAZOR BURN! Run the Alum block over your face and it will telegraph a great shave. Ones man's poison I guess. That's what's fun about wet shaving.

I get BBS with Derby after 2 pass and clean up, zero irritation. I really like them. I use all blades 3 times only. Derby are in my top 5 (out of 23 ive tested). And for reference, Amazon has 6,000 reviews averaging 4.5 out of 5. That is pretty darn good. Thanks for the review.

I've used Derby Blades in all of my razors and they performed as well as my Astra, Parker, Gillette and Rapira Platinum Lux Blades. I personally think Shark Blades aren't that great because I can never get a smooth shave with them. But Derby blades have always been very smooth and I always get a nice shave with them.

I wish I had the same experience with Derby Blades as you have! I have tried several Derby blades from various packs that were old & recent & I only can muster 1 good shave.... not great but good, until they start tugging & giving me irritation. I don’t know if it’s because I also have coarse hair but they don’t work for me with Shaves. I know Blades are highly subjective in that one kind will work with a wet shaver & be terrible for another. That’s awesome they are working for you! I am going to have to try the Derby Premiums because I’ve heard they are better. Thanks for watching Brother! Take care & enjoy the shaves!👍😎

Great video! For the past year I have been using and ranking my favorite blades and in this order from #1 to #5 - Nacet, Derby, TREET, Wizamet and Astra. For my skin these Derby blades blow away everything - except Nacet! These Derby blades are absolutely phenomenal for me. Interestingly for me, the oldest and supposedly worst Derby blades are my favorites by far. I have 2 lifetime supplies of each of my top 5 (2,000 of each) so my search for blades is long over - I’m set! I guess I am biased but I can’t imagine anyone having a negative opinion of these and I get 15 shaves out of them - easily… right there with Nacet (for me).

Maybe I need to try a recent made Derby to see if it’s better than the older one I used in this video! Nacet are perhaps my favorite blade now. So in case anyone wants to know, he used the old style extras in this video.
In 2017 when retooling for the newer black premium and derby USTA blades, they changed the extra line as well.
The blades are now thinner and more sharp.
    Here's how you can tell:
    1. If the tuck has blue cardboard it's new because they only started offering the blue 10 packs after the improvements.
    2. If green, the writing on the cardboard goes short ways (think portrait mode on printer) on the old ones. The writing goes long ways (think landscape mode on printer) for the new version
Personally I can't use the old. But I did try the new, and although not in my top spot they are a whole lot better.

Derby blades are good for short beard growth. I made the mistake of shaving with derby blades with 1 weeks beard growth. It would not cut through my beard as smoothly and it tugged. I ended up with irritation and razor burn.
It kinda depends on experimentation and your skin type. Mind you I have used derby blades in the past with a couple days beard growth and had no issues. They just are not optimal for thicker beards. You end up doing 3 passes.
I always get the best shave with my favourite blades. Astra blades and feather blades. I like my blades super sharp.

Just a theory...these blades often ship with new, inexpensive razors. I'm not suggesting the problem's the blade or the razor but perhaps with the newer wet shavers who tend to buy them. I was just reintroduced to Derby Extras because they shipped with my new Razorock German 37 Slant and I had no issues with them. Maybe experience is the difference?

    • @brianthefloridian6254
      @brianthefloridian6254  2 роки тому +1

It could be experience but I think there are better blades out there for a new wet-shaver to try. Hopefully many new wet shavers are not discouraged but using the Derby Blades with their new razors they came with. Many times inexpensive safety razors also include Dorcos with them which In my opinion is a better forgiving blade to someone just starting out. Maybe the newer Derby Extras have gotten better. All I ever experienced with Derby Extras were they were ok for perhaps one shave & that was it before they started to dull & tug. Thanks for watching Brother!👍😎

I personally would start out with a Lord L-6 Safety Razor if you want to give it a try & learn the technique. It is inexpensive & a really good decent razor to start out with & if you don’t like safety razor shaving (I bet you will!), you don’t risk much $$ for finding out it isn’t for you. I think you can find the Lord L-6 for around $10 or even less than that. The Henson is good but pricey for someone just starting out. After you get comfortable & proficient with the Lord razor, I would move up to a Merkur 34C or even a Edwin Jagger DE89 razor ( which are somewhere between $30-45. Both are great efficient safety razors! I would personally also get a decent synthetic shave brush & a good shave soap or lathering cream to go with starting out. Cremo is OK but I feel you will enjoy the experience more & prepare your face better with the brush & Lathering Soap/Cream. Preparing your face is key. Take a shower if you can or place a hot towel over your face (about 5 minutes) before you shave to soften the whiskers! Try different blades to find the best for you! Last but not least, time your time & don’t press down with a safety razor (use the weight of the razor)….. learn the correct angle (about 30 degrees) & enjoy the experience! Don’t be discouraged if you have rough shaves at first….. it will get better over time! Also check out Mantic59 on his channel for advice & hints….. his how to shave videos are legendary!👍😎

I'll never say a razor, blade, soap, etc. is bad because what is bad for me may be great for someone else. Also, I was watching Matthew Lawrence the other day and he had Voskhod in his bottom five and for me it's in my top... if not the top. That being said, those Derby's and the Dorco 301s are two blades that I've tried multiple times and will never use again. They just don't work for me.

Yes, blades are subjective like you mentioned. I’m just echoing what many, many Wetshavers have said about Derby Extra Blades & wanted to see for myself! There are lots of blades to choose from for sure! I think the choices of blades helps make this Wetshaving hobby interesting!👍😎

Man, I tried a Tiger blade the other day. It was sooooooo bad. I had to abandon the shave and switch to a different blade. I couldn't even make it through one pass. Derby blades are not even in the same category as far as bad blades go compared to those Tiger blades.

I heard the Tigers were also bad blades to other Wetshavers. I guess I’m spoiled with the great Blades like Nacets, Feathers, Astras et. The Derby blade is not the worst but definitely below average for me. Thanks for Watching & the Comments! Love hearing about the “bad blades” out there😎👍

Nope, the problem with derby is, a lot of people buy these when they are new to wet shaving, a blade is a blade, once you get your technique down you can get a smooth shave from any blade. I use derby more often then not and get a perfect shave.

    • @brianthefloridian6254

I have to respectfully disagree. If a blade isn’t sharp enough or smooth enough, the results from the shave will result in a shave with some irritation. I agree that it takes patience & practice to get your technique down to help with getting a irritation free shave but there are other variables such as the blade, soap, cream er. You cannot always get a smooth shave from “any blade” as I know from experience trying lots & lots of different blades in the past. My favorite blade with smooth shaves is Feather blades because they are always made with excellent quality control & consistent. I find Derby & other blades not consistent with how they are made with quality control & consistency not a strong suit for some manufacturers. That’s my honest opinion & as with anything YMMV. Thanks for watching Brother & take care!👍😎

Bought 1000, can get up to 5 shaves (being lazy). Occasionally get a blade that’s totally shit. Derby blades are just ok. Use a ‘66 Tech

That’s great they are working for you. I get 5 ok shaves with the Derby Premium blades but barely 2 with the regular extras. Thanks for watching!👍😎

Astra is the worst blades on the market….every time I used an Astra I had really bad irritation, redness, bumps, and I could have used a butter knife to get better shave compared to an Astra.

Interesting. As in every case YMMV! I actually think Astra Platinums & Astra Super Stainless are some of the best blades around. Beware because they are fake Astra blades & other blades out there! Maybe use Astra blades from a different pack? How was your experience with Derby’s? There are so many blades to choose from so there is a blade for everyone. Hope you found your perfect blade!👍😎
