    Thank you for this video. I am a mom of an autistic kid. We also happen to be of African descent and Christian. It is so hard for me to tell others that being an American is a huge blessing. People want me to have the opinion that my family should feel bad or marginalized. Yet, I don't. I feel happy and free. Happy 4th of July!

    You can have freedom of speech but people often forget that people have the right to criticize you for whatever you say. For example people like to say incredibly hurtful, violent things about lgbtq people and when they are criticized for it they cry “freedom of speech!”. I don’t think that banning people from saying lgbtphobic things is particularly productive but I believe that I have the right to call them out on whatever they are saying. Cancel culture is a real thing but people like to cite it in situations where it doesn’t apply, as a sort of bogeyman they can use to distract from the argument. Just something I thought that I should bring up

    • @AutismFamilyChannel
      @AutismFamilyChannel  Рік тому +3

      I agree. I believe if people say incredibly rude or hurtful things then others should use their free speech to shame that kind of behavior. People can disagree without being hurtful or vindictive. I also think that road works both ways, lgbtq people should speak kindly to religious groups they may disagree with and not try to force their speech. We can all coexist if we are civil one towards another. All the best 😉

    • @KANDI-
      @KANDI- Рік тому +6

      @@AutismFamilyChannel the problem is that lgbtq people’s rights are being taken away by major religious groups. We have a right to be angry at religious people who are making the laws that oppress us. Freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom of consequence.
      Edit: also, I don’t believe that human rights are something that we should leave at agree to disagree, as these are people who don’t choose to be discriminated against having rights taken away.

    For the most part, I agree with you. But coming from an abusive family & having been bullied when I was most vulnerable, I do want to add that nobody should be made to feel unable to speak up for themselves in the name of free speech. At the end of the day, bullying & abuse are an abuse of free speech.

    • @AutismFamilyChannel
      @AutismFamilyChannel  Рік тому +2

      I agree they are an abuse, but that’s beyond just using speech. As long as someone is speaking calmly I don’t think they should be silenced.

      @@AutismFamilyChannel As long as they're also being respectful, I agree. Some people using more subtle forms of abuse can speak calmly & unless you know what you know what you're looking for, it won't be until a little later that you think, "Hang on a minute, what happened there?". For example, they may try to tell you what you want to get their own way & control you.

    I have Asperger's Syndrome (ASD level 1. yeah, yeah, whatever). Thank you for advocating for Free Speech. I completely agree with everything you said. I appreciate your balanced, non-political approach to this. That, I believe, is the only cooperative way that society can move onwards. I've had a lot of people try to speak for me, all my life. But I learned to speak up for myself. That's when I stopped feeling helpless and angry and started taking initiative on what I could change in my own life to make it the life I want to live. I recommend life coaching, specifically with a coach who specializes in ASD.

    I think that a message like this is ignorant of the impact that people at the far end faces. We indeed are capable of filtering out these negative voices to some extent, especially if we are surrounded by equally strong, positive voices, some however, do not have that. It is these type of people that we are catering for when attempt to filter hateful messages. Think about it, imagine hearing the same hateful messages day in day out without an once of positive. Think about the people not born into a loving caring family as you were, or those that didnt meet positive caring people along the way. Imagine what these people had to endure duringtheire upbringing and their journey through life. Will is one thing, but it is not everything. There are things in this world that can break even the strongest of will. When the conditioning starts to happen, it doesnt just happen overnight. How it happens is by being constantly exposed towards this negativity, something which i doubt you've ever experienced to the degree that some has. Then there is our genetic predisposition to being affected to things of this nature moreso than the average, we are not all born equal. This is a very complex issue. Its not solved by filtering hateful voices and also not solved by promotion of free hateful speach. No policy can solve such an issue it without itself creating other issues, it is solved by the collective efforts of each and every member of society.

    I agree with a majority of what you've said; everyone should have free speech, but there should also be limitations. free speech isn't free speech when it's abusive, derogatory, or belittling or wrongfully silencing others. the boundary line for what's considered such differs; I think that's why free speech is considered controversial.

      I believe all people should be treated with the love and dignity they deserve. Even though as a person of faith who believes God’s plan involves traditional marriage and raising children both here and in the eternities, that is not justification for hateful or hurtful comments/actions from any Christian or member of our faith. In fact, God’s two greatest commandments are love God and love thy neighbor as thy self. So even if we disagree with someone’s lifestyle, politics, opinions, even their choices in music, whatever it may be, we still show love for all God’s children. Having said all of that, we ask the same courtesy be extended to us, that we are treated fairly, that our speech isn’t forced or legislated into conforming to what’s politically correct, etc. In short, no I don’t agree with homophobia, but I also don’t agree with Theophobia or religiophobia either. All the best 😉

    Very well put, we need to know history so that we can try to avoid the mistakes of our past. That being said we also need to understand that history is written by the victors who may disagree on some aspects. We also need to recognize propaganda from others and at times from government trying to influence us to support a certain mindset.
    I grew up in the US but have spent most of my life in Canada but am sad to see the degree of polarization that has developed in US politics, btw in my youth I supported Barry Goldwater's solution to Vietnam but as I got older I realized that that solution would only last for a few hours before WWIII destroyed the world as we know it. Unfortunately I can see the strong possibility of your 2050 analogy coming true unless there is a major course correction.
    Remember that the foundation of many of the early colonists and later the US was both freedom of religion and freedom from religion.
    Enjoy the 4th of July!!

    Excellent video and I agree with all points with a caveat: as a child I was mercilessly bullied in school. Along with autism, I have Tourettes and ADHD. As a child I was ill equipped to handle the bullying. Bullying could be considered a form of free speech. Thankfully I was fortunate enough to have amazing parents to guide me though it. I do not think anything in this world can be considered absolute. I am very fearful of the current state of affairs in our country as laws are being passed to limit marginalized peoples lives and your Nazi comparison is spot on! Dealing with CPS because my Granddaughter for who I've been raising since she was 5 1/2 mths old, she's now 10. I knew something wasn't quite right and was looking to get her an eval thru Children's NOT the County Mental Health. When she was around 2 she had signs of Autism yet was Not diagnosed. She was very aggressive wit me to the point of her Laughing as she would do what she could to hurt me. No one was really listening to me. Finally the referral went thru then got thru the Waiting list. She was diagnosed with ASD Mixed with ADHD and "I" became a Student. Here I am a single grandma dealing with a emotional on many levels situation. Eloping....my Granddaughter called it an adventure! I've had to call the police to help me: find her, get her from where she would be, get her into my car.....Well, I had been trying to seek Help they got CPS involved. They All twisted things around and it got to a point to where I so didn't want to have to call them. I tried so hard to find her myself. Just before dusk she had taken off, I pout the groceries in the house then I go looking. it was dark by the time I finally called [she did end up being found in 1 of the areas I had been going back & forth to!]. The policeman that came ALONE had been standing in the back ground on a couple of my calls with other officers that were actually handling it. With the looks from him, is part of why I was dreading calling them. Because of the Time even though he knew of the struggles I'd been having, when she was found he calls me & tells me he's taking her to the station and a hold was being put onto her for CPS to come & decide on if she's coming home or not! WHAT?!?! She didn't get to come home & the next day the officer calls me and asked if I'd meet him out i the parking lot of where I live cuz he has some paperwork for me. Boy was & am I Stupid! He gave me a ticket for Neglect that was checked off under Child Abuse. The police & CPS do not work together, that's what they say. During the time I've been dealing with CPS, they keep telling me don't keep saying Autism. Why? That's what has got us in this in the 1st place not her not me....Autism. I kept telling them from the beginning, She is autistic and this is going to end up causing her more harm than good. I haven't stopped The caseworker wanted me to say it was My fault she kept leaving! I said No, It's what She calls an Adventure. It became a Game, & 1/2 the time she's get a toy from the officer. I'm the one calling for HELP!!! Well, this Separate case with this Ticket, I get told at court recently that they want to charge me with Child Endangerment and give me Probation, Parenting Classes , & I honestly can't remember what else for my brain was going What, WHAT?1 I told the court appointed lawyer NO. I am NOT guilty! So, now she writes down these court dates and points to 1 and says that's the one....??? Don't say Autism! Here I've got Custody back since March, This began in Oct. she was sent Home in Jan. & now in this other court while dealing with this "Treatment Plan" that has to do with things I had been trying to get help with; boy are they getting paid Good. They couldn't just Help us with suggestions, #'s, NO they had to put my Autistic Granddaughter in Foster and put us both thru emotional nightmares of different kinds. Get us into Their system so they can get paid from The Federal Level! They sure got their Christmas bonuses! My lawyer for the Ticket has talked with me once for a very short and then hasn't talk with me since! Anyway, I keep putting this out there because I'm scared and I'm upset. This isn't doing my Granddaughter any good either! I"m sorry y'all. Thank you for communication with us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Yes, people are entitled to free speech. However, they should also have to deal with consequences of their words. Example: in the US, it’s illegal to shout “fire!” in a crowded area when there is no fire or threaten to kill people or spread inappropriate child content, etc, because of the harm / death misinformation causes. Like it or not words have meaning. In America, people can say whatever they want. Agreed. But if death or violence are a direct result of said words, they should face legal consequences. The right to say whatever I want should not overpower someone else’s right to live or live peacefully

    • @AutismFamilyChannel
      @AutismFamilyChannel  Рік тому

      Sure, if it can be proven that someone’s words have directly (not indirectly) have caused death, I think they should be held accountable, or at least shamed. If it were up to me and someone yelled fire in a theater, I wouldn’t just automatically panic and start trampling people. I’d use my sense of smell, I’d go check the hallway for smoke. If I didn’t see anything I’d just locate my nearest exit and wait until further notice. The fire in a crowded theater example assumes that people will react in the worst way possible. I don’t believe that has to be the response. We need to expect more from people. So personally I don’t think that speech should be banned, but if a person did that I think others should shame that person online with their free speech and let the public know that person is a nuisance and bad prankster. If they don’t learn their lesson they will probably get shamed out of employment, etc. I think people rely too heavily on government to solve their problems when they could do safe and effective things to sway people in other directions. I could be wrong, but I’d prefer that to legislating speech.

  • @Subzero_2
    @Subzero_2 Рік тому +1

    If I am not mistaken, the 1st amendment only affects governments ability to limit an individuals speech. Another individual or business has the ability to not listen to or limit a persons ability to speak on their platform, such as youtube.
    Does that make it correct? No, but that is the limit of the 1st amendment. This does not mean we should not try to take a chance to understand each other, even if we disagree. But the freedom of speech from many businesses is financially motived and goes with what is safe to profits.
    Thank you for sharing your view point and allowing others to speak here as well.
