@@Occuria1everything he’s built still works and works well. Doesn’t have to look pretty. He builds function. Take any of your rigs out and go yank on stuff like he does and see how long it lasts
Hey Paul... "a Jack of all Trades, but a Master of none.. is still a better man than a Master of one"... an old saying we have here in Australia... and it describes you perfectly mate!! Big Love to you and all the Fabrats crew...❤❤❤
Back when I was a kid hunting was an excused absence and during hunting season, September to November most of the trucks in the parking lot had guns in them . We never had a school shooting either. I’m 65 so that was a long time ago. 👍😉🤔
I was a teacher in a logging town back in the early to mid 1970's. The opening of elk season was a school vacation day. Every rig in the school lot including the teacher's parking area had rifles or shotguns in the racks. No one ever thought anything about it. That was 42 years ago!
That was a lot of work ! 👍 I'm glad Cooper was there to ask some questions because when I asked them you just keep on working and don't answer out loud. 😏😉
Toyota does make a manual shift in the HILux. The HiLux is basically a Tacoma. I was hunting in South Africa and my guide had one. It was also a 4 cylinder Diesel engine.
Love watching Paul work. Back when I started driving, in 1961 (I'm 79), Paul would have owned the local gas station with a single bay repair shop. Perhaps a hoist. He would have fixed any vehicle that came into the shop. A true Shade Tree Mechanic.
Learned a good trick with pinion bearings. You grind out the inside of the old bearing so that it's a slip fit on the pinion, shim it up until your pinion depth is good, then install the new bearing with the shims you used to pre-set your pinion depth.
Good morning I am really enjoying the taco improvement build. Seeing the Original FabRats workhorse recovery vehicle back at 100 percent will be a great thing
As a Canadian from southern Manitoba above North Dakota and Minnesota, we've just warmed up to 10°f which is a tad bit better than the -32°f we were experiencing until yesterday, I can honestly say that you're in t-shirt and shorts weather when this video was made Michelle!!! 😂😂😂❤❤❤
Yah its cold here in s. Ca. 69 degrees, unreal , i still have a small fire in the morning because i love winter & fires . Brown outside, no chance of snow this yr .
"I do this out of necessity because I don't want to pay someone to do it." LOL! I'm the same way, Paul. I cannot stand to pay someone to do something for me when I can do it myself cheaper... well sometimes anyway. Merry Christmas Fab Rats team!
I agree with Paul's assessment of how it goes when you tell your wife to calm down. Telling her to calm down is like pouring gas on a fire, it's always a bad idea! 🤣 Merry Christmas Fab Rats!
As Rory Irish (Trail Mater) once said, "I used to run Toyotas all the time. I fixed them so they were tough enough to take it." His partner Mike asked him how he did it. Rory's response was, "You simply rip out every Toyota powertrain and suspension component and replace them with GM parts."
Here in sunny South Africa, they are called Toyota Hilux. The third gen is named Legend 45 and comes in both manual and automatic options. 2 engines 2.8l diesel or a 3L V6 petrol. A quick web search will yield much joy 😊
Merry Christmas to all! Good video Fab Rats and Tom getting things done on the Taco upgrades. This truck will be much better at what's required of her off road. We got a glimpse of Grandma Lolly and Michelle stopping by and Jace and Grader.
Hey Paul. Been watching your videos for years. Have a trick to pass on to you if you’re interested. When your breaking bolts lose. Try using a snapping action on the wrench or ratchet. Think about how a impact gun works. It uses a snapping action to loosen a bolt.
Wishing the whole FabRats family a safe and happy Christmas. Whole family is inspirational in so many ways. The Willys Jeep looks so much like one that my Dad had when I was growing up! Good luck to everyone for the drawing on the Jeep and I hope everyone has a great New Year!
Getting the measurement for the new hole to be cut in the floor board could be done as easy as putting the shifter cap bolts back in the trans about the same height as the xfer case cap bolts. Then just take a piece of cardboard and tap the bolt head pattern into the cardboard. Then hold the cardboard up to the floor board and line up the trans bolt pattern to existing floor shifter hole, and then center punch the xfer case bolt locatations into the floor board. Cut a xfer hole in the floor board to facilitate the xfer shifter.
Merry Christmas Fab Rats! Just a note to say I never miss an episode. Just want to share a trick I used when doing gear work. Grab an old frying pan to warm the bearings and ring gear. Set it to 350⁰ and let the parts come to temp. I also made studs from old ring gear bolts so the gear drops right on. Hope this helps. Happy holidays!
@15:00 it would take 15 minutes or less to surface that flywheel properly. Unfortunately the shops that used to do the work have mostly quit doing it and would rather make the same profit by selling a new flywheel. But while the supplier makes the same profit either way the customer pays a lot more, in this case about twice as much. The OEM flywheel is going to outlast any parts store replacement. Even LUK which was an OEM flywheel supplier to Toyota, aren't as good as parts supplied to Toyota. $30-35 is what it should cost to surface that flywheel. The step lip is a 2 minute job to measure and grind. In my younger years back in the mid 90's I spent plenty of hours at a flywheel surfacer. I would do about 15 Mack flywheels for the local Mack dealer service center once a week and it took about 2 1/2 hours. Unfortunately the shops that did this work have slowly phased out all of their service work, flywheel, rotor, drum surfacing, press work etc. Heck I remember when many NAPA stores had full engine machine shops, every parts store had a brake lathe, and most had a flywheel grinder. Now you buy rotors that are thow away for $90 and even the ones which are machinable are tossed out with life still in them because very few shops have a brake lathe. I miss the old days when you could BS with KNOWLEDGEABLE parts guys while waiting for your rotors or drums to get turned, the only pad and shoe lining option was whatever raybestos oem equivalent was.
God bless and Merry Christmas to the Fab Rats crew, the Cox family, and Tom and his family!!! My two fav quotes of all time.. It's not done until it's done at least twice and fart tight for sure!!
Good afternoon I am here in Connecticut and it is also very cold and you guys are making me hungry eating this Mexican food even though it’s just a little after lunch have fun
I sure wish these guys could help me get my El Camino back on the Rd, it was my grandpa's and has been sitting for years, ran when parked and is my dream to start driving it again

Did y'all do a new rear main seal in there. If you didn't you probably going to wish you did. Anytime you take apart the transmission and you can get to rear main seal you put a new one in it.

Havnt seen a wheeln trip in a while. Hope you bring this once lockers and 4wd back in next week. Maybe tell Matt to get the Banana harness together and revisit one of those trails you guys used to do in the earlier videos with coolers flying off Tacomas. Those were the good ol days.
Hi Paul. Just watched you drive home a bearing race , great tip about using a brass drift , but please still use safety glasses, a friend lost his eye when a brass chunk flew off doing exactly what you did , Best wishes from the uk have a great Christmas
