  • For my new series, Thank You Notes, I teamed up with Olay to challenge a group of women to surprise their role models - the women who inspired them to face anything - with a thank you note.
In this episode: Michelle Kwan may be one of the best figure skaters of all time, but it’s her incredible resolve that made her such an inspiration to fellow skater Gracie Gold. In this video, Gracie tells Michelle: “You once estimated that you’ve fallen 131,000 times in your skating career. To some, that might seem like an insane amount of times to mess up, but it’s the way you always got up that inspired me.”
In 2017, Gracie checked into a treatment facility to address her depression and eating disorder. While she was there, one of the many voices that reached out to offer her support was Michelle Kwan. “When you reached out to me,” Gracie tells Michelle, “It meant more than you willl ever know.” Watch the whole emotional exchange above.

Gracie, I am so proud of you; it has nothing to do with skating. You talked about your illness and are making it o.k. for others to do the same. You get a medal just for doing that. Congratulations.

As a little girl, Gracie Gold meets her idol Michelle Kwan, who signs a shoe for her. Years later she meets Michelle again, this time as an Olympic skater herself. How sweet. 😀

Beautiful!!! The very best and the skater with the most heart is Michelle Kwan! I have enjoyed watching her skate since she was 12 years old. I am happy to see that she now has a beautiful baby girl. I wish her ONLY the very best!!! Good luck to Gracie!!!

My heart soars when I witness the human spirit in flight. Thanks, Katie. Michelle Kwan has such a beautiful spirit. I was happy to see Gracie return to the ice--an act of pure courage. This is such a lovely story! I hope that Gracie's dreams come true. I thank Michelle for continuing to exemplify the best of the human spirit.

I've always loved Michelle--such a class act and certainly hoping that Gracie continues on her path to recovery--if it includes skating, I'll be watching and cheering her on, if not, I'll be wishing her only the best.

This is a direct relation to how a lot of competitive figure skaters have felt. I have felt mad at skating and it was like my world ended but I couldn’t have imagined how it felt on a world/Olympic level. Love them both!

Dear Michelle Kwan: In the 1998 Champions on Ice press packet you stated the book you were curently reading was "Snow On Falling Cedars." Thank you. I am in the middle of reading this book for the fourth time and the first time while not in jail. 😍

Awwweee. Love you ladies so much. I grew up admiring Michelle. And Gracie, I admire your talent, as well. Please please skate your heart out only if you want to in the 2022 Olympic year and go for the gold that's in your heart. We love you and wish you all the best, Gracie! Btw, do a tango in the long, lol.

Beautiful interview. As a retired skater (and my Dad was a coach), the unspoken pressure to be perfect in all facets of your life can certainly be overwhelming but so many of us have come to realize that skating taught us so many valuable life lessons. I wish you much healing and success as your life journey continues.

@cassl14 She probably supports him for the same reason so many Democrats are holding their nose and supporting him, including the vast majority of African-Americans who lived through Jim Crow and continue to live through the new Jim Crow...look at the alternative. If Bernie had more of a real chance to win, she'd be working for him, but the voters have spoken including the ones who originally supported him in 2016 but now support Biden. I personally cannot vote for Biden in the general due to a lot of factors, but I have the luxury of living in a deep blue state where I can afford not to. If I lived in a red state or a purple one or a swing state, I would vote for Biden too but hate myself for having this Sophie's Choice put in front of me. There is so much at stake with the future of the courts which will determine what rights we have protected for the rest of our lives and beyond, children in cages, competency in office to deal with disasters, etc. I could live with a continued 4-8 years of neoliberal policies since it's just resetting to a much better status-quo to build off from than going way back to the right where we have to fight for basic human rights and decency again from the far right.

Unfortunately that’s is what is left in a lot of these child athletes: depression, insecurities, eating disorders, mental health issues. Too much pressure on kids… and the worst thing both parents and coaches are to blame.

Perhaps that’s why she left Frank before the 2002 Nationals. Give Michelle lots of props for winning the National Title and Olympic Bronze Medal without a coach. That’s never happened in modern skating era. Shows that by that time, she was finally her own person and taking charge of her own skating career.
