We don't hear vibes used often enough these days. I remember hearing groups with vibes more often back in the sixties. They've always had a pleasant and relaxing sound - to me.
That's jazz in general, you don't hear it except on 1 or 2 stations. Back then Jazz was on every single station out there, so it was inevitable that you encounter vibes.
Vibes are REAL INSTRUMENTS and not electrified, computerized, synthetics. So enjoyable to hear, and a delight to play behind. Oh, I'm a kit drummer since 1962, also percussion for the last 30 years as well. I like all the colour!!!
Incredible. The talent, skills and natural genius is undeniable. Thank you for this wonderful inspiration and awe inspiring gift to our collective humanity ♥

This song is doomed to be amputated. Its main melody has become so popular that everybody ignores, forgets, or simply don’t know a beautiful and fundamental part: THE INTRO! Listen here: ua-cam.com/video/n9Sfx3c7fR0/v-deo.html&feature=related
I think 4 were used because he is used to having 4. Its just more comfortable for him. I agree, this particular song could be played with 2, but he is probably used to having 4 so he uses 4. I do recommend you get used to it. Get the hang of playing 2 octaves at once, then get the hang of using your wrist to control each one at a time. You will become a better player for it. In high school, we lacked the percussion to completely fill out the pit, and I was specifically coached to play 2 octaves at once to fill out the sound. Its definitely worth your time to learn.

@@owenkrahl7446 I live in Kentucky. They've never even heard of jazz here. Thank goodness for my CD's and streaming.
@@jimihendrix1575 It's such a shame that Jazz has been forgotten in some parts of the country.
Warren Wolf is a stone cold killer on vibes. Check him out. BTW, nothing against this guy, he is awesome.
The first time I saw Spyro Gyra in 93 they had a vibes guy.
Victor Mendoza may not be a household name but he is not unknown. In jazz circles he is a legend. His rendition of "Autumn Leaves" is brilliant.
It is one of the very best versions of one of the very best standards.
He reminds me very much of Cal Tjader.
His flow and phrasing on his solo is incredible. It is so difficult not to rush in a chart like this

magnifico...
Bravo Mr Mendoza
precioso!! .
Great music and great video, leaves on camera long enough to take in the musician at work.
Undoubtedly fantastic, what Burton grip can do. Now, what about pink tufts instead of mallet heads 3 and 4?
Fantastic! Anyone know what kind of mallets Maestro Mendoza is using?

I think you mean mallets 1 and 3 or 2 and 4, depending on which side you choose to count them from. The leftmost mallets in each hand, either way.
WTF was that? 😯😯What an excellent musician 😍😍🙏🙏👍👍
Inspirational
Eccellente.
Wow
que mostro
That's is the Burton grip, if no chords are intended, the 4 and 3 mallets won't be used.
cooooollllllll

2 of his mallets are good for not much
Any sheet music for this?

Very nice, Live music is so good. What happened at 2:45
wow , que rico...........

Virtuoso )
That was good! The last time I heard him play he played too much,
Terry Gibbs and Milt Jackson are my favorite vibists, although Hampton was not bad.
So Mello needs some wine.
Frank Zappa's 'Nut' for a minute_Improv
He's really good but dang he brings his mallets up high lol
This entire piece could've been done with two mallets, just saying. I get blisters easy, maybe that's just me.
I really liked his embellishments though.

Token_Black_Guy jazz vibes are traditionally 4 mallets
