Please, please, PLEASE do "I'm So Excited". Probably their most hard hitting dance tune from the very height of their career, and they are GORGEOUS🥰 Also please do their Country hit "Fairytale" which they made history with as the first BLack vocal group to sing at the Grand Old Opry, AND won them a C&W Grammy "...for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group, marking the first awarding of a Grammy to an all-female vocal group and making the Pointer Sisters the only black women to date who have won a Grammy in a country music category" They REALLY broke barriers and made history! Everybody LOVED these ladies❤❤❤ Anita also had a number 2 hit on the Country charts in a duet with Earl Thomas Conley "Too Many Times"
@@user-gt2uf8cq9y Bruce had the release of the "Darkness on the Edge of Town" LP delayed by managerial troubles and a lawsuit (it didn't come out until 1978), so a few songs found new homes as Bruce kept on writing while he was trying to get rid of his old manager.
I remember being amused when people seemed surprised that Bruce Springsteen was interested in R & B music. Not only did he produce R & B shouter Gary U.S. Bonds but he also worked with Donna Summer though their collaboration didn't get as much attention as I thought it would.
I've heard it rumored that Springsteen wrote this song with Elvis in mind. He hoped that Elvis would listen and record it, but of course Mr. Presley passed away before that could happen, so the song went to the Pointer Sisters, who did a great job with it and almost took it to #1.
"Jump" is actually a later song than this one. "Jump" is from 1984 and this is 1978. It's just that their dress styles are different and the way they carry themselves, just following the trends of the two time periods. The Pointer Sisters first came to prominence in the early 1970s, and I think you'd really enjoy one of their early hits called "Yes We Can Can" from 1973.
Another great early song is their country hit, "Fairytale", written by Anita and Bonnie, and winner of the Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group. The song was later covered by Elvis Presley.
Pointer Sisters first hit - Yes We Can Can. Lead Singer here is Anita who recently passed. Younger sister June as well. Eldest Bonnie still performing as the Pointers with daughter - and grandaughter. 'Fire' well before 'Jump'!
Yeah, PeteW, edit that again. Bonnie passed before Anita, unexpectedly. Anita had been sick for a few years, and she and Bonnie were best friends. It really took the fight out of Anita to lose her. Ruth performs now with her daughter Issa and granddaughter Sadako as The Pointer Sisters. They both used to fill-in occasionally before becoming permanent members, so it still feels authentic.
Jay and Amber, What I love about the Pointer Sisters is how genre-defying they were. The slow rocking Fire was written by Bruce Springsteen and was years before Jump was released. Even earlier was their genre-defying, Grammy Award-winning Fairytale that will blow you away … you won’t believe it’s them. Then take in their sultry Happiness and my personal favorite If You Wanna Get Back Your Lady. Prepare to be awed!
Jay & Amber, you will Love their "So Excited" and "He's So Shy" !!! fyi, C. Weil & B. Mann wrote the Cass Elliot song you just did the other day!! You'll love Weil & Mann's other hit songs: Righteous Brothers - " Soul and Inspiration"; BJ Thomas - "I Just Can't Help Believing", "Rock and Roll Lullaby"; James Ingram- “Just Once”; The Ronettes - "Walking in The Rain"; The Drifters- "On Broadway", "Saturday Night at the Movies"; Edyie Gorme- "Blame It on the Bossa Nova". Cynthia Weil co-wrote "He's So Shy" also!!
This record won them a platinum disc . Bruce Springsteen wrote the song then gave it to the Pointer Sisters. When the Pointers sisters first started they were 4 of them and they jazz , county and would dress in 1940s clothing. However their sister Bonnie left to go solo. As they became three, they change to Disco with songs like ''Jump'' and '' I'm so Excited'' and modern sounds like ''Fire'' and ''Slow Hand''. It worth noting that each of the 3 sisters take in turns taking a lead in their songs
This is the most accurate and informative comment I have read on this vid. Hopefully Jay & Amber see it. These ladies fall into a class sadder than underrated-- They are relatively unknown and almost forgotten these days after having had phenomenal success throughout most of their career. With Anita's recent passing, Ruth is the last sister standing.
One of my absolute favorite Pointer Sister jams is "Automatic"! That song still pops even today! The sister with the deepest voice is featured on that track. Perfection!
There is no more versatile group than the Pointer Sisters. They did disco, rock, soul, show music, jazz, Bebop etc. You name it, they did it and all with style and class.
The Pointer Sisters with Fire peaked at #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 the week of February 24, 1979. The rest of the top 10 at the time: 1) Do Ya Think I'm Sexy - Rod Stewart 2) Fire - The Pointer Sisters 3) A Little More Love - Olivia Newton-John 4) I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor 5) Y.M.C.A - Village People 6) Tragedy - Bee Gees 7) Le Freak - Chic 8) Lotta Love - Nicolette Larson 9) Somewhere In The Night - Barry Manilow 10) I Was Made For Dancin' - Leif Garrett
Thanks for posting! Fascinating to see the difference even one year made between music in the 70s and 80s. Music was changing but wasn't quite there yet.
The pointer sisters had a few hits before "Fire" but this was their first entry into the top 10. Actually reached #2 in the country. Held off from the #1 spot by Rod Stewart "do ya think im sexy"
Ruth Pointer has lived in my small town in Massachusetts for decades. Although her sisters have passed on, she still performs with two other family members as the Pointer Sisters.
What most don't know or forget is that they started out doing some serious jazz. The first three albums (and the fourth if you count the live album) on Blue Thumb Records covered serious jazz music and some blues and more. There was their first hit, Yes We Can Can, and they covered more (Bonnie was still with them, the fourth Pointer Sister) like Dizzy Gillespie's Salt Peanuts, and then Steam Heat, Little Pony, Love in Them Hills, Jada, Black Coffee and more. I personally preferred this genre over the pop hits they later had and that is not to say they were not stellar as well. But the mere vocals they shot us with on these albums are mind blowing. They did a whole lot of scatting as well. A really top tier group.
I like how over their career each of their major hits featured a different sister on lead, but this one I believe was Anita who also did lead for I’m So Excited and Slow Hand. June was on he’s so shy, happiness, Jump and Dare Me, and Ruth on Automatic and Neutron Dance, for example. RIP Anita, June and Bonnie.
There's just no beating The Pointer Sisters, they're awesome! They managed to seamlessly transition from their 70s hits right on into the 80s. Now, to be totally blown away, you must, must do "Automatic" from 1984. You won't be disappointed.
Probably the two most iconic songs by any artist they have somehow managed to skip over. Both songs would be cool if they reacted to with their entire family, would be one big party.
The Pointer Sisters were the FIRST and ONLY black females to win a Grammy for their song " Fairytale" written by Anita and Bonnie Pointer for Best Country & Western Performance by a Duo or Group in 1975. They were also the First Black Female Group to appear at The Grande Ole Opry in 1974. El is Presley covered "Fairytale" on his final studio album. They have Country Music Grammy and Billboard Nominations for other songs spanning from 1976,1981 1986, and , 1987.
Robin Williams performed this Live while singing in the voice of Elmer Fudd - still plays in my mind whenever I hear it from the Pointers or Springsteen - LOL!
I remember reading an article about the Pointer Sisters and their 1940’s vintage way of dressing. It seems that when they first started out there wasn’t much money for clothes and they shopped second hand. I thought that was so clever! They always looked fabulous.
In Chicago where they sing, "you turn on the radio", they inserted "you turn on WLS". Which is the call sign for the largest rock radio station at the time.
AS Springsteen tells it, he wrote this for Elvis Presley who died before he could give it him. Springsteen's version is FIRE! He rarely performs it. These ladies did a fine job.
The Pointer Sisters crossed over to the Country charts with "Fairytale." They were invited to perform at The Grand Ole Opry, becoming the first black female group to appear there.
I was growing up in Los Angeles when this song came out by the Pointer Sisters if I'm not mistaken they had a unique version for several different local radio stations. So when I heard it they started with "I'm ridin' in your car, You turn on the radio(filled in with "to K-Earth 101") immediately after radio. That was the station I heard it on even though that was an oldie station playing songs from the 50's at the time.
At least Bruce Springsteen wasn't pissed when they made (him a fortune) a cover of it like he did when Natalie Cole made a hit of his Pink Cadillac. And they were a bit older in Jump than here. This is from the disco era. Jump was from the Prince era.
When Joe Cocker covered "With a Little Help From My Friends" I think the Beatles had no choice but, to say he owned that song from that point forward, lol. Same almost goes for "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window."
I know Bruce Springsteen wrote it and he sang it and so did the Pointer sisters obviously but I loved it when Robin Williams sang it like Elmer Fudd it was just hilarious.
One of my absolute favorite memories of childhood was turning off the lights, and grooving to this record on my parents big old floor stereo back in the 70s
When you grow up in a family singing together, the harmonies are unmatched...you have the same genes, you grow up perfecting your vocal abilities. It's a beautiful thing, and The Pointer sisters do it well! ❤
Pointer Sisters representing Oakland which is where I live. There's no less singer in this group. Each one of them take turns singing Lead. One of them may have sang lead the most.
This is one of my absolute favorite songs! Beautiful! New song requests: 1. "Get Here" by Oleta Adams/1988 2. "Baby Come To Me" by Regina Belle/1989 3. "I Know" by Dionne Farris/1995 4. "You Gotta Be" by Des'ree/1994
They are a very underrated group. Some of their music, like that of Chaka Khan, is emblematic of their time and iconic of the prevailing styles of the time.
Loved these ladies when I was young. Fun fact, they are first cousins to Paul Silas who played and coached in the NBA. He was a great Celtic and with Seattle and Phoenix. I think the girls brother Aaron played major league baseball.
One of my favorite groups love the Pointer Sisters. An old friends played guitar for the Pointer Sisters in their early days and told me of the struggles they went though to make it, makes me appreciate them even more.
The writer, Bruce Springsteen, also knocks this one out of the park in his marathon live concerts. Back to the Pointer Sisters, there is SO much you need to hear from them, including their first funky hit, "Yes We Can Can," plus "Automatic," "I'm So Excited," and "Dare Me." They were so hot by 1984 that even their producer, Richard Perry, put them as backup singers on Barbra Streisand's dance single, "Emotion." Unfortunately, for the sisters, the mix of "Emotion," was subpar and their backing vocals could've been anyone's. I firmly believe had they brought their vocals up in the mix, the song would've been a big hit.
Their brother Aaron played major-league baseball and later became an NFL official. One time he was working a game and his sisters sang the National Anthem.
Other Pointer Sister Songs to consider. They started as a quartet. Songs: Yes We Can Can, River Boulevard, Salt Peanuts, Love in Them There Hills, Fairytale, Hands Up/Wang Dang Doodle (live version), How Long (Betcha Got a Chick on the Side), You Gotta Believe. Then as a trio: Hypnotized, He's So Shy, If You Wanna Get Back Your Lady, Baby Come and Get It, Dare Me
Please react to the Pointer Sisters earlier hits from the mid 70s! Their performance of 'Yes We Can Can' on Soul Train. Other songs: 'Betcha Got a Chick on the Side'; 'Going Down Slowly'; 'You Gotta Believe' from the movie 'Car Wash'. They were originally 4 sisters in the group (Ruth, Anita, Bonnie and June). Bonnie left the group and had a disco hit 'Heaven Must Have Sent You' in late 70s. 'Dare Me' by the Pointer Sisters was a later hit in the 80s that's one of my favorites!
The Pointer Sisters started out in the Funk era in the early 70's. They scored a Top 40 hir with "How Long(Betcha' Got a Chick On the Side)", which I loved.. has a cool funky riff.
Bruce Springsteen wrote this for Elvis, but then Elvis died. Robert Gordon recorded a version, then the Pointer Sisters had a hit with it. Bruce has played it live a number of times.
You should play their songs written by New Orleans' own Allen Toussaint. Yes We Can, Can was one of their earlier hits when all four sisters were in the group. After sister Bonnie left, they did another one of his songs called Happiness.
I love The Pointer Sisters. They started with four sisters; Ruth, Anita, Bonnie, and June, now only one is still with us, Ruth the sister with the low contralto voice. My favorite is "Betcha Got a Chick on the Side." My neice was just about seven years old when that was on radio and she'd belt that song out like she was really feeling it!❤️
Every time I hear this song, I'm reminded of Robin Williams. His Elmer Fudd sings Springsteen is priceless.
Cracks me up every time I hear it.
"Fi-wuh" 🤣
😆 So true!
Came here to say the same thing 🤣
Same!
Please, please, PLEASE do "I'm So Excited". Probably their most hard hitting dance tune from the very height of their career, and they are GORGEOUS🥰

Anita also had a number 2 hit on the Country charts in a duet with Earl Thomas Conley "Too Many Times"
Yes!
I don't how they haven't done it by now, I always thought that was their most famous one...
Also Chain of Fools with Clint Black.
Written by and first recorded by the Boss himself in 1977.
Not recorded by Bruce until it appeared on his live album in 1985

My absolute fav!

Wow that's a nice list of songs I was young back then but still remember them
The competition on the charts was insane back then. Often going to #1 was just a matter of luck and timing.
They've reacted to just about everyone on this list. 12 if you include writers Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young (Lotta Love).

You two were dancing in harmony during the song in your chairs. It was so sweet.
Their best song imo is "He's so Shy".
It' really good❤
Absolutely, and Slow hand!
Anybody remember when they were on Love Boat and Isaac the bartender, sang the chorus with them?
It's great, but I am partial to Slow Hand!
I like the Pointer Sisters' song "I'm So Excited" the best. I hope you react to Sister Sledge's "We Are Family".

Silky smooth, slow burning "Fire". Lots of great Pointer Sisters tunes to groove to. ☮💙🎶
I remember when this came out and I remember my mom (R.I.P.) singing this in the car while it played on the radio. Good memories 😊
They are a very underrated group. Some of their music, like that of Chaka Khan, is emblematic of their time and iconic of the prevailing styles of the time.
6:47 - Actually Jay, the sisters were younger here. This song was released in 1978, while as "Jump" was released years later in 1983.
Somewhere there is a Robin Williams stand-up performance in which he does this song as Elmer Fudd.
Yeah, I'm so Excited next time...thank you!

They were great and so underrated!!!😘😘😘❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍

Robin Williams used to cover this song in the voice of elmer fudd lol...
So many great songs from these lovely ladies!
My 1st concert 1975 fresno county fair. This was several years before disco and they sang Jazz country and funk. I was gobsmacked by them!
The name of the song is Fire, and that's exactly what it is: 🔥
Now that you've heard the original, Ya'll have to hear Robin Williams cover version... you'd love it!!
"I'm So Excited" from the Summer Lovers soundtrack is FIRE too.

Robin Williams did an amazing, hilarious impression of Elmer Fudd singing this song.
I love how you bring back songs I've forgotten about till I hear that first note. ❤❤❤❤
Elmer Fud sings the best version

Then as a trio: Hypnotized, He's So Shy, If You Wanna Get Back Your Lady, Baby Come and Get It, Dare Me
‘Dare me’ and ‘Automatic’ should be next in the list.
Tina Turner ‘Nutbush’ (live Wembley 2000) is a must!!
Dare Me is a banger
Another classic song by this iconic group. These sisters were always awesome.
One Of My Favorite Groups & Songs Of The 80s!😵💫🤗🥰💃🎶🎛🖥
They are younger here than in Jump. This song was from 1978, Jump was from 1983. Slow hand is another great one they did.
Love this song. Great cover by The Pointer Sisters. Two of their earlier songs to check out are Yes We Can Can and Steam Heat.
I love The Pointer Sisters. They started with four sisters; Ruth, Anita, Bonnie, and June, now only one is still with us, Ruth the sister with the low contralto voice. My favorite is "Betcha Got a Chick on the Side." My neice was just about seven years old when that was on radio and she'd belt that song out like she was really feeling it!❤️
You need to hear the late Robin William's version of this song where he sings it as Elmer Fudd
Another female group you haven't reacted to in awhile is the Emotions - flowers, don’t ask my neighbors, I don’t wanna lose your love.
Written by Springsteen, I always liked it!
